Why remove choice? GIF's are just fine, as are PNG. For those of us who are FORCED (for whatever valid and/or stupid reason) to support non-PNG browsers, GIFs are still the best choice.

IMHO, PNG *is* the way to go. However, this does not rule out GIF automatically.

Having said that, I've fought a few bushfires, and they're all devistating. This fire is the worst the **ACT** has seen.

Oh, and something that hasn't been said .. it's one long fire front - not several different ones as is being reported in the news. And that's from a) people on the ground fighting it, and b) a report from one of the helicopter pilots.

    Well done.

I'm an ex-Canberrian myself, and know the area fairly well. From talking to a friend who's being doing just the same (he lives in Woden), your case isn't the only one. This is why so many people are turnning up at the hospitals with "minor" burns, mostly because they're doing their best to stop the fire.

I've been there myself, when living in country Victoria. One of my neighbours was doing a controlled burn when this insane wind appeared from friggin nowhere and the burn just went real bad. Twenty or so of us in the immediate area spent a good half hour limiting the fire's spread until the the CFA took hold of the situation. I managed to save my house, but the two next to me we're not so lucky. I still remember standing infront of 40 foot flames, drenched in water, holding the thing back with a wet blanket and a hose. Strangly enough, I didn't feel scared ... just determined not to let the fire win.

Fight the good fight dude; my heart and thoughts are with you all up there.

  10. Options on Would a Boycott of the MPAA/RIAA Help Matters? · · Score: 2

Fighting terrorism is hard, as it's difficult to effectivly target and counter. As such, the work to nip it in the bud by focusing on it's support structure is fast becoming the new battleground. I say take the same approach to the MPAA.

Start communicating with the artists who support it. Provide and promote technical and ethic alternatives to it -- again, to the artists. Supporting a lobby group (such as the EFF) makes much more sense. Each time you 'reward' the MPAA, send an email (or better yet, break out that old pen and paper and WRITE a letter) to the artists involved saying how you enjoyed the show/music/whatever but share your concerns with the MPAA based association.

    And KEEP doing it.

Focusing on the political arena is important, but it's only one battlefield. Choose where you fight this, find the best arena to combat this (one where the MPAA has less strength/interest) and don't let the fight stop.

My partners youngest child was diagnosed with the various incarnations of ADHD, and suffered quit a bit as whilst the medication was effective, it did not fit the bill as she grew. It seemed like she 'outgrew' the medication.

After much angst, we she was finally diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome, a form of autism. Now, she's off the medication, we're using a whole different range of understanding and coping systems, and life is really starting to shine -- for her and for us.

Why mention this here? The medical professionals we consulted were simply off base with their initial diagnosis. We've found *so* much support from people who have gone through the same process, and now we're help others go through the same thing.

Peer support is a big thing, for you and for your child. I can't recommend this enough. The feelings of helplessness and guilt can be increadible at times, as anyone who's gone through this sort of thing can testify.

I should note that I'm not recommending that *your* diagnosis is incorrect. What I am saying, I guess, is that the medical professionas and we as a community are learning more about these issues each day, and mostly we're learning that we were wrong.

Keep an open mind, get some support for everyone from community groups who are in the same boat as you, and keep looking to the future.
