You can rest assured it is no longer the superior product it once was. It's been hashed up and recoded by the same team that brough you the AOL ISP client software, which has been the death of many a Windows-based PC. You have to wonder what all it's phoning home to AOL, too.

It's sad that you have all these bad experiences. I work in an IT department ON a university. We employ a LOT of student workers in various capacities. We only had one or two bad apples come through. They don't last long and are easily replaced. My suggestion would be to find direct phone numbers from the CS/programming professors. I'd also recommend hiring masters level students if you can get them. The previous posters statement about the party thing applies far more to the undergrads than the grads.

Now for the comments above -

Graphic design - Most coders are horrible graphic designers. The graphic design should be left to the designers and not the coders. Art students are even cheaper than CS students.

Human factors testing / engineering - This particular person does seem to need anything horribly complex, so I have a feeling that would be overkill.

Markup, layout, and general UI design - Your designer should have some input here, but most coders have usually used enough programs to have a pretty good instinctive feel for UI.

Technical writing (help system, page text, etc.) - Since this person's project doesn't seem terribly complex, most of the code can be documented in comments. I've seen you coders in action...I manage a team of developers. I've yet to meet a coder that will actually document anything willingly. I seriously doubt that the gentleman in question is going to leave the page text up to a coder.

    - Programming, Testing, Maintenence - Wow! Look it's the mid part of the application life cycle. Which is exactly what you hire the student to do.

Personally, I'd pay extra to sit in the "no screaming baby" and "no squealing brat" section at the movie theater, restraunt, etc. I'd certainly pay extra to live in an apartment complex that had the same kind of rules. Unfortunately, thanks to the "fair housing" act *MY* preferences in the matter are disregarded. I end up with neighbors who have poorly disciplined, destructive children. I have had several incidents involving chidren and theft or children and vandalism. While I deal with the process within the law, I would rather not have to deal with it at all. It's a PITA. If I had property to lease out, I'd certainly want to put things like "No kids and no pets."

While we're on the subject, I'd also like to see a "No jackass screaming into the cell phone section", especially at the movie theater. Face it, we all have things that annoy us. Why shouldn't people be allowed to be upfront about that? I understand that what we're looking to prevent here is the creation of ghettos, in the true sense of the word, were people are segregated to specific sections of town. I think, though, that unless you're posting about 5 units or more, it shouldn't apply.

If I'm leasing a room in my house, theres a lot of trust and personal comfort involved in that. My jewish families won't let someone who isn't jewish stay with them, because of the Sabbat. Sabbat begins on Friday at sunset and ends at sunset on Saturday. Specific rules must be observed during that time. Some sects of Christianity feel the same way about Sundays. I'm sure other religions have similar issues.

Bleh! If people want to discriminate, let them. They'll do it anyway, at least if it's in the open, you can save your time.

The trick is to make it so that it requires interaction with a live human or two or more in order to craft some of these high powered items. I know of several smaller privately run RPG game servers that have serious crafting components for those that choose to do so. You can also restrict raw materials. For example, if you want to make leather armor, it takes 10 hides. Now, you can't just walk over to another merchant and get 10 hides. You'll have to get them from a player who's been out hunting and who has the "skin animal" skill. He might only have one or two. You may end up having to buy hides from 7 or 8 people just to have the skins you need. Now you need metal too... You get the idea.

Having done more than a bit of diving, I can tell you that many octopii are very curious creatures. They seem to use color to communicate with each other. Depending on the type of octopii, many are quite sensitive to light, some being attracted to and some being repelled by it.

I'm also betting that these folks had all their little lights blazing, all their little tools humming, and lord only know what else. I'm sure that they attracted the thing. Most people don't realize that octopii have problem-solving intelligence. (It's the one thing that makes me feel guilty about eating them. I guess if they were smarter they'd find a way not to taste so good) Anyway, because they're smart, they also investigate odd things. As fragile as they look, they are suprisingly strong. I've had an octopus not much bigger than my hand nearly pull my regulator out of my mouth. I can only imagine what 100lb octopus is capable of. Frankly, I'm a bit surprised they have sub left. My personal feeling is that neither of them deserve to be mentioned with the word "humantiarian" in the same sentence.
