I commend you on your grammar, but you do not speak for the common denominator of the city you live in. :)

  3. Why I will switch from Tivo when this is available on Microsoft Takes on TiVo · · Score: 3, Interesting

I love my standalone series 2 Tivo. I like the menu system, the ability to add additional storage, and the overall functionality. Sadly, Tivo will fall behind because it has committed too much time and too many resources to DirecTV. DirecTV will undoutably chew them up and spit them out at some point in favor of their own in-house developed DVR. DirecTV has no loyalties, including to its own customer base, with its record of extortion and threats for those customers who have shown interest in smartcard development. I wish very much that Tivo could survive without DirecTV, and focus its efforts elsewhere. Sadly, it doesn't look like Tivo is moving this direction.

First and foremost, Tivo has made no commitment to their customer base to offer a standalone or CableCard HD recorder. This is discouraging, at least... and it spells out the beginning of the end for this well-meaning company.

Secondly, when considering current digital cable content, the stream is sourced digitally, decoded to analog, and reencoded by Tivo. This result is less-than-optimal video quality. In fact, it's quite poor, even at the highest quality setting. I want higher quality recordings, even without consideration of HD.

So, I cannot record HD, do not have dual tuner support, and cannot access VOD content directly through Tivo. Even if Tivo WERE to develop an HD standlone record with CableCard support, it would be unable to access VOD and PPV content, based on CableCard specification.

Perhaps this isn't Tivo's fault. Maybe they did try to partner with cable providers and were beat out by a better MS offer. I want to give Tivo the benefit of the doubt here, but they are failing first on several other fronts which are only problems of Tivo itself.

2.4GHz encompasses several different frequency ranges in the 2.4 proximity. IE, you can change your wireless channel to operate on frequencies which do not conflict with other wireless APs that might be in your area.

I was just curious to know how I might avoid a particular conflict with a cordless phone which may or may not be able to be tuned to frequencies further apart but in the "2.4 GHz" frequency spectrum

  6. WRT54G and wireless dropouts on Creating A Super-Router (For Free) · · Score: 1

As I read this Slashdot post, it was in response to testing network connectivity on my Linksys WRT54G. Not because it is great, but because it keeps consistantly dropping my wireless connection since I have updated to the Sveasoft firmware. I also use VoIP and it was important for me to prioritize bandwidth in order to make phone calls.

I have tested the configuration using 2 laptops with wireless cards. It seems as if both units will drop out at roughly the same time, and are able to see other Wireless APs in the area, but not the Linksys. Has anyone else experienced a similar problem with te WRT54G? I am wondering if maybe I just have a bunk unit, or if this is a common issue.

On an unrelated matter, 2.4 GHz cordless phones wreak complete havok on the wireless network. Are there any techniques, channels, etc. that can be used to avoid overlapping frequency utilization?

  7. Re:Live recording on New Sony Minidisc Players · · Score: 1

Unfortunately, in Sony's *extremely* DRM-happy world, your live recordings are useless.. unless you opt to further degrade your audio quality by re-analog recording everything from the line-out into a nicer digital format..

While you can digitally dump all your illegal MP3s to your Minidisc to your hearts desire, FORGET about digitally transferring your live recordings back to your PC! This is not allowed!

Let us all pray that Sony removes this ridiculous restriction in its new format before they launch a new format destined for disaster.

  10. Not the ONLY thing DirecTV is using DMCA on on Satellite Hackers Charged Under DMCA · · Score: 5, Informative

For *some time now*, DirecTV has been actively pursuing the legal bullying of end users who have done nothing more than purchase *any* smartcard related equipment, regardless of actual use of proof of illegal use.

DirecTV has been engaged in a sort of legalized extortion scheme against people who have purchased smartcard equipment from raided dealers in the USA, undoubtably as part of a plea bargain with such dealers. Yes, these dealers marketed their products towards DSS, but standard ISO smartcard equipment? Come on. The interesting thing about buying products from these dealers was that smartcard programmers, emulators, etc from them was MUCH cheaper than buying from a non-DSS oriented business. To put things in perspective, the average asking price to settle out-of-court with DirecTV is to the tune of $3,000 to $4,000.. again, for the mere purchase/possesion of smartcard equipment.

It would be especially nice to fit these units with a DVD-Rom to make a compact home-brew DVD/PVR/Photo/Video Jukebox. Especially considering your video input options for the PVR portion: DV/Firewire, USB capture device... whatever.

  14. No VGA Out?!?! on Digeo To Ship Full-Featured Linux-based PVR · · Score: 2

I'm sorry. But this is a huge disappointment. Something like VGA Out would be so easy to include on this PVR, with little cost-per-unit involved. Many people who own LCD/DLP projectors will find this lacking feature quite disappointing, as the Digeo could quite *easily* be a progressive DVD player and de-interlacer for standard TV.

Perhaps I'm missing the point and they have component video out, but not VGA? In this case, it's even sillier that they did not include a VGA out option.
