hmm... strange that I would agree with such a flamebait post. But after being bitched at for around 3 hours strait for "messing with the servers" when our switch overheated and flaked out, sort of made me bitter. Course I'm also the asshole that won't let people pick passwords that are their initials and the number 1. And people wonder why I get annoyed when they call me and they don't understand what pushing the escape key means. *shrug*
+ 1 BSD guy who bursts in to the room periodically and says "hah HAAAAH!" just to piss of everyone so they aren't thinking clearly when they install. Then you can see if people can fix what wasn't installed "just right"... which to me would be a more important test.
If I had no idea what the facts were, I'd have to take their word for it, and allow my opinion to be shaped by my own lack of knowledge
Very true. Time after time since the whole Anthrax scare I found myself correcting people about what this or that biological agent could do, how you could spread it, etc etc. The only reason I happen to know these things is because I did a report in high school on nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons. It sort of makes me cringe to think that I'd probably be put in prison now for researching that report. I mean how do you protect yourself from terrorists, if you don't know how they think, or what they would do?
Actually I used a rotary phone all through college. Mainly because no one would ever ask to use my phone. Either it took WAY too long to dial, or the number they were calling would require they push a number button. I still prefer the ring if you ask me. Which is pretty distinct in a college dorm, so you always know it's YOUR phone that's ringing.
While true, that's the same as building your own computer, then randomly flushing some extra money down the toilet because you purchased an OS you didn't use.
It's not like I can't download grep, or wget for windows. Linux distros only have more functionality because that's what they distribute with Linux, Linux itself doesn't add that functionality. There are TONS of open source projects that have windows ports as well. Vim, Apache, MySQL, just to name a few.
I think your dead on about people wanting things to work exactly like windows. Which makes many people hypocrites when they refuse to use things that don't work the way "Microsoft Products" work, whenever MS decides to change something.
3. Tolerate an increasing disregard for the law, and have yet another law on the books which/might/ at some time be selectively prosecuted, but isn't often.
Funny you should mention that, since I was just thinking about my disregard for the law. Truthfully all these laws as a whole mean less and less to me, as more and more of them are passed. I consider myself to be a very honest law abiding person for the most part. I don't pirate software, hell I even drive the speed limit. But all these laws and copyright schemes have pissed me off to the point where I don't care about them anymore. I don't agree with pirating, but seriously, how in the hell am I going to find music that I LIKE? I'm not listening to that shit on the radio. MTV is a joke. I admit the proportion of songs is much higher than what I buy (I'm still not buying a whole album for one song), but the amount I buy is much higher than what I would otherwise (which would be virtually nil). As many people have said time and again, if the price were lower, more people would buy. During college I copied a HEAP of anime on VHS. Now that I have the money, I'm buying it on DVD. The media giants are just out of control. I could care less about what they want anymore.
holes in the ozone layer and fosil fuels are totally unrelated. If you want to know where the holes are comming from, look at what the airline industry is washing their planes with.
Basically look around sourceforge. It's probably worth your time just to look around for things you might need but not even be thinking about. Such as: CD-DA X-Tractor (what I use to rip CDs) Miranda - The best ICQ clone I've seen Audacity - A audio editing program that needs a bit of work, but actually works pretty well for basic needs.
I agree. Having started making a few web apps, I can say that being able to do quick error checking with Javascript is rather nice. It's a lot easier on the user if you can say "you didn't fill in field X", and then shift focus to that field, then doing the equivalent on the server side. Obviously JS isn't a replacement for anything on the server side, but it can certainly enhance the way everything fits together.
Maybe not 4 digit, but going into the millions for a replay is ridiculous. That's one reason I don't like newer pinball machines, I can't even tell how close I am to the replay without really thinking about it because there are too many digits to track while playing. Is it just me or does it seem like they moved the flippers farther apart in newer games too?
I'll keep that in mind. I'm a user of FreeBSD myself, but I've never really even looked into the others. The main reason I was trying to install linux is that most of our network is already running Linux, so I figured I'd try to keep the network as homogeneous as possible. I have nothing against Linux, but there are quite a few things about it that rub me the wrong way.
I shouldn't need 64 MB of RAM to take an OS off a CD and put it on a hard drive
I definatly share your sentiments there. I've tried to salvage a few 486's at work thinking, yeah, I'll put linux on it and do something with it (as web server or whatever). Too bad for me, pretty much every distro blows up bacause there is insufficent ram (usually around 32 megs, which is a LOT).
what sony wants me to think:
hmm, interesting. I wonder what that lady is doing with that cellphone. Is that a digital camera as well? That's a pretty cool idea. Maybe I should look into getting one as too...
what I'm really thinking:
Man, look at that totally hot chick with that gizmo. I wonder if i could get her number.
Probably the biggest problem is that a distorted guitar sort of seems to reach a threshold for quality, and it seems like you can go lower quality with a less noticable difference. Which is probably why a band like Opeth is preferable as they have a very wide range of sound. I've ripped all my Opeth albums to vorbis, and been satisfied with the results. Then again I didn't spend a lot of time thinking about what would be the perfect sound/size ratio, I just dumped everything at 256kbs.
Man wants to sell car with penguin bumper sticker. Claims he uses Mozilla and likes it. Even has a geocities page saying he likes Mozilla, and dares anyone to slashdot it.
Assuming those are the same sort that I used when I went to Korea, the Japanese-style cabinets are definatly the way to go. Standing up is okay, but generally if your going to have some sort of seat in front of it, the height isn't so much of an issue anyway. As the parent said, if you can buy one for a couple hundred, why give yourself the headache of making one totally from scratch?

The catch is that you'd probably get arrested for trying to steer a person with them.

Trying to recompile the ships computer kernel so they can get their ship out of port.

How are you?
I give you this discovery to have your advice.

True in a Nutshell
/bin/false? Why not make a grand slam manual and include /dev/null as well?
2 pages, $1.95
Okay, do we REALLY need a 2 page book? And what good is true with out

I donno about that. I'm pretty happy with living in the present. Been doing it all my life after all.

Most of you people will dismiss this because it's coming from Sony, but were it Microsoft doing something similar you'd be raising all kind of hell.
Probably because whem Microsoft tries to stick models with their software, it tends to look really stupid. (as shown here)
The jokes on you, MS Word IS the trojan! The payload is the insane fees they charge for office now that there's virtually no competition...
Oh, wait, I have to be rich first so I can bribe them... Oh well...
it's sort of ironic how many normal people with good ideas could make a lot of money if they were already rich.

only if it has a penguin bumper sticker
Just try something like:
Man wants to sell car with penguin bumper sticker. Claims he uses Mozilla and likes it. Even has a geocities page saying he likes Mozilla, and dares anyone to slashdot it.
Should be enough...
