  1. Re:One to see on Will Smith as I, Robot · · Score: 1
(I know what you mean, it's just that the idea of the "Fresh Prince" doing Shakespeare would make me laugh out loud... and not in a good way.)

Anyone else remember Branagh's version of "Much Ado About Nothing" where Denzel Washington and Keanu Reeves absolutely butchered their parts? Will Smith and Mike Myers would've done better.

BTW, I think Smith does a decent job playing a basketball player (alias: Robert Horry) on the LA Lakers.

  2. Church Pays Royalties, Too on Finnish Taxi Drivers Must Pay Music Royalties · · Score: 2, Interesting

The church where I go pays an annual fee so that we can sing copyrighted praises to God. I tell the deacon we should sing open source music only (as I think the new stuff is mediocre anyway). Now ain't that a hoot?

  3. Re:LSD? on Einstein Unveiled · · Score: 1
When an idea is in my mind, I can easily process relatively complicated concepts. But when I try to commit them to the written word, I run into difficulties because I am 'out of sync' with the standardised influences and meanings which are socially attached to words, and therefore the ideas which are conveyed with them.

I have the exact problem: I can't seem to get my PhD thesis written.

Is it just me, or does it seem that there are only a paltry number of themes available for Mozilla? Is it so hard to make them that hardly anyone's doing it? BTW, I do like the Orbit3+1 theme.

My company's systems only let us use IE, so I have no choice but to do so if I want to read /. during the day.

That's funny. Your company thinks, "they can only use IE, things are under control" and you're off reading /., you loose cannon you.

  6. Atlanta Olympics Anecdote on MS Asking Makers of 'Windows' Software To Rename · · Score: 5, Interesting

I remember in the run-up to the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. The Atlanta Olympic Committee (AOC) was going after people aggressively. You just about couldn't even say "Olympics" without a license. There was some old family-run Greek restaurant, called The Olympic Diner (or somesuch) and they had been around for years. Of course, they hadn't _trademarked_ their name and the AOC made them change it.

I'm no Luddite, I think all this innovation is fine and dandy (although, sorry, I do not salivate at the prospect of MS getting into my phone) ... but can anyone promise that I'll still be able to buy plain, simple, boring phones and basically do telephone calls? And don't need an engineering degree to operate? Please?

Americans are getting more and more crazy with needing new things, it seems. I guess it's because we think "change == progress" is true, and since there's no real progress occurring, we just need to crank up the change, and "voila!" we'll all finally be happy. We just are slavish dogs of the marketers, and just drool when the "new feature" bell rings. That new feature will surely change my life!

    My rant is over.

Hope you wanted the mod points, coz I didn't need them. Don't you think Samuel Adams would be a scandal up in Boston these days? He'd shock those statists. But then again, today's Boston wouldn't produce anyone close to his stature.

As it is said, you have nothing to worry about if you are doing nothing "wrong". But, face it, we all do SOMETHING that the government wouldn't like us to do.

Remember, they had to get Al Capone on _tax evasion_. They wanted to get him, but had to find something, _anything_, that he was doing wrong. If they want to get you, they will get you one way or another. Even if they're not monitoring you.

Therefore they are free to make whatever sort of contribution they want. And you know what sort of alternative to Microsoft platform they come up with? Something that attempts to look and feel identical to its Microsoft counterpart!

I think Microsoft is Moby Dick, and there sure are a lot of Captain Ahabs around here. The reason that there is so much anti-MS sentiment around here is that it energizes so many people, drives them on. It's not enough to build a good system, gotta beat MS.

The Joint Strike Fighter program is a giant boondoggle, as is the F-22. I mean, what threats are there to US Air Superiority? Alien starships, maybe, or some Boeing jetliners. But here we go, pumping billions of taxpayer money into the military-industrial complex (aka "taxeaters").
