  4. That's sad... on Andromeda And Mutant X Cancelled · · Score: 2, Informative

Andromeda could have been a great show. The Nietzscheans were a terrific race, I'd hazard to say a bizarre melding of the Vulcans, Klingons and Borg. I thought the acting was great and the whole show had a happy-go-lucky campiness about it.

I stopped watching it, though, because it pissed me off constantly. I never saw a show fall so far short of its potential.

Interesting note - some writer said the Nietzscheans were going to be called the Dawkinites (or something similar) initially, because they strongly echoed parts of Dawkins' thought, but that was abandoned because it didn't have enough of a ring to it. But I loved the Nietzschean attitudes, they seemed like one of the all-time best misreadings of Nietzsche...and once again, it makes me sad to think what the show could have been if the writing staff worked a little harder...

I left (not layed-off) IT several times to be both a prison guard and an fdny fireman, because I was curious about other aspects of the world. I'm now a fireman and have to say it's probably the best choice I ever made. I make a lot less money than I did in IT but as long as I rid myself of my debts (I haven't yet :)) I should be a-o-k. But I have the free time to study IT and I've reentered IT on a consulting basis.

So I think that there shouldn't even be a question or regret in your mind. Seems like a lot of the responses are in the same vein anyway. Many say talk to your employer FIRST, to see what you can work out - I'd say talk AFTER you make your commitment to go abroad so even if he throws money at you that doesn't influence your decision.

New York city is having huge problems balancing its budget. I was recently sworn in as a New York Firefighter (see newsstory here), and Bloomberg is planning to shrink engine companies and close firehouses. This is endangering the lives of countless firefighters as well as the civilians living in the neighborhoods (suspiciously only the poor ones) where firehouses are to be closed. The ongoing drama can be read about on my union's website

Bloomberg has been creatively attacking the budget problems that the city is facing (for example integrating parts of the Correction Department and Probation Department and licensing out the city's logo). Since he comes from a technology and business background, it will be interesting to see if he can be the "solutions provider" we hired him to be (minus the MS certification).

  10. Re:I only part agree with the rigged comment... on Tai Chi Robots · · Score: 1
I never saw Rickson Gracie do that. The Gracie you're probably thinking of is Royce Gracie, who did pull guard (aka go into the bitch position) a lot of times. But if you look at the size of the guys he was fighting (he was only ~170 lbs at the time) it's understandable. And the fact is that he did take most of his opponents down and pound the fuck out of them.

Also, the bitch position, though I'd never pull it on concrete or in jail is a position of decent power. When used aggressively (a great example is in Frank (not Ken) Shamrock's destruction of Tito Ortiz several years back) it definitely has its merits. You can use your hips to weaken the top man's punching ability as well as gain incredible leverage for submission holds.

You have to keep watching the family. There are a lot of Gracies, with many distinctive styles. Some of them are cruel bastards who enjoy knocking people the fuck out...Now my favorite fighters aren't Gracies (except Renzo Gracie who's school I go to :)) but I give most of them much respect. After all even though Royce abused the bitch position he still won... Nate

  11. I only part agree with the rigged comment... on Tai Chi Robots · · Score: 1
The bitch position sucks dick :), but the Gracies are very capable fighters. I train at Renzo Gracie's School and he's a cool guy as well as a bad motherfucker. In Japan his arm was broken in a fight against Sakuraba (my hero), you could totally see it, but he didn't tap out. In fact at least 4 Gracies (Helio, Royler, Renzo, and Royce) have broken major bones during fights (3 of them to Sakuraba) and didn't tap out. The whole clan's got some major balls.

Now I personally don't like Royce Gracie's overuse of the Guard (the bitch position) and I find it hypocritical that his self-defence book doesn't contain even one instance of it. But the idea of the guard is that it's the best position to be in when things go wrong and you're on bottom. None of the Gracies has any problem with taking guys down, GETTING ON TOP and then punching OR arm barring them into submission. It's just that fights don't always work that perfectly...

In summary, Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is about doing what works...get positional dominance first and then have your way with your opponents (sounds gay I know). It doesn't even discount groin stuff and eye-gouging, it just argues that you're better off doing them from a position of dominance. The thing about having mats and no nasty stuff is that it prevents the fighters from being brutalized more then they have to be (and having known many winners and losers trust me they get brutalized aplenty). But yeah, it does have the nasty side-effect of popularizing that bitch position :(...

As a wrestler/bjj guy myself let me say that both UFC and Pride (its Japanese counterpart) are no longer about the "lay-and-pray" style of fighters. With guys like Sakuraba, Baroni, Ortiz and Silva fighting they are turning into exciting bloodfests. I hope the guard (that aforemention bitch position) is completely eradicated since it has no place on the street (you're vulnerable to being stomped out, etc.) and therefore doesn't belong in reality combat.

Hey genius, the phrase was "just as many as before" not "just as many as are good men and women". In other words I wrote that cops are the same people they were before this whole thing happened - no better and no worse. For the most part they are good folks, but they're not doing the Lord's work by not banging in. So your hostility is completely misdirected.

And the majority of cops don't get beeped on their days off. Those that do usually are in special VOLUNTARY units like yourself (Traffic Accident Investigation, SWAT). New York's real estate aside (you can live outside the city and still work there too, you know), money's good in civil service and the benefits are very good. The ESU guys here make a fortune - maybe you should move here.

Now it IS a fact that most firefighters had no clue how dangerous it would be in the WTC. Do you think the 1st Dep and the Chief had a suicide pact? No way! Despite FDNY's noble tradition of leading from the front, I suspect they had multiple motives WRT being at the most famous disaster in this city's history. I know I would...one being curiousity which is a very human emotion.

p.s. Note that I never said I was a firefighter, just that I'm on a long list to be one. And I never said I was against the police in the slightest, just that I feel people should take a measured approach to things like this & not let panic do the thinking for them. I'm not saying we shouldn't be grateful for having police and learn as we go through life, but we should realize that we are paying for them and they are therefore just doing their fucking jobs when they protect us. If they ever harrass you and your friends, you should in no way tolerate that. And you should not forgive them for that simply because you consider them heroes now.

Maybe I was exagerating by saying "ANYTHING" but I basically meant that we knew all along that this thing (or something of its magnitude) was possible, so for this one thing to trigger an attitude change (and I have friends who are rescue workers in there and are taking me down there to help) shows that you're thinking out of fear. Or maybe you never cracked open a magazine or newspaper to realize what sort of nuclear, biological and chemical threats are out there. 5-6 thousand people is drop in the bucket compared to what could happen.

I'm definitely for taking a proactive (damn it hurt to say that) approach to combatting terrorism. I always was, because I was very aware of the threats lurking out there. But let's not think out of fear. After all, "The Enemy of my Enemy is also My Enemy" (Drago Musevini).

  18. Bull fucking shit on Hackers: Uncle Sam Wants You! · · Score: 2, Insightful
If you let one bombing change your opinions about ANYTHING (other than stiffer package checks at the airport), Osama Bin Laden has completely won. The poiont of terrorism is to instill terror in civilians and in your case it looks like they've succeeded.

There were good cops and bad cops, and there still are. That hasn't changed even though the dangers of their profession has become more apparent to us. And, speaking as someone with a law enforcement background, I still feel that we shouldn't be scared into handing over the keys to our freedom. Yeah, a bunch of them died, but I'd say 95% had no clue of the dangers (except for some firefighters who work the building collapse units) that awaited them in that death trap. Yeah they risk their lives every day but they get paid pretty well to do it (after top pay over 60+/ per annum with great benefits) and, in the case of firefighters, get all the tang they can drink (I'm on the firefighter list myself and should be going in in a few months - maybe sooner now). So for the same reason we shouldn't profile all arabs as terrorists, we shouldn't paint all cops with the martyr brush. Many are good men and women, but just as many as before still have lubed up broomsticks. The heroism of some of them still does not give them the right to harrass you and your friends.
