I used to be a huge fan of EA BIG, their SSX games continue to amaze me (im still playing ssx3 many hours a week, 1.5 years after release). The rest of BIG's games are complete dreck. NFL Street has become the ninja gaiden of football games (run along walls, etc)
Im waiting for an independant developer to make a semi-realistic snowboarding game ala ssx. Im sure it would totally rock.
Ive had those very same issues. I even wrote into ask slashdot about it a while back http://ask.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=04/07/30/23 11222
I bought myself an xbox and havent looked back. I even got a new laptop for christmas thats used to check the weather before my drive to work in the mornings. Sad, i kinda miss hacking away on my linux machine, but id rather veg out and play xbox.
Programming for a job ruined my hobby, so i got a new hobby.
Media player? Internet Explorer?! I cast thee out!
turn in your geek card on the way out
seriously, how about something that ran firefox with the pdf plugin and a nice little mPlayer or Xine? That would do it for me
Why not learn it, if it is such an neat language (ive dabbled a bit in python after i had to write a semester paper on it, you're right, it is a neat language)
I did this for some spare cash after i graduated but didnt move far from my college. I still had contacts in the computer services dept, but i got real sick of dealing with people so I just stopped taking their offers for YARF (yet another reformat).
Now, people pay me to mod their xboxes and get xbmc working with their media collection. That was kind of accidental, after several people saw my kickass setup and wanted one too!
Unlucky for you. My school took a different approach. they use some QoS software (packetseeker i think) to manage the bandwidth taken by certian applications. In effect, bittorrent, kazaa, etc become all but useless, but they arent stopping you from using them. On a friday or saturday night, i can get some good speeds though, when all the other students are at the bar
ever hear of this place called suprnova.org? I hear they've got torrents in the intarweb now! Actually, i love suprnova, its the only torrent site i go to anymore, they have everything (cept pr0n)
Coz the version i got is repacked and works sans steam. No auth, no connection needed. I can still play even if valve decides they dont want me to, or they go under in a few years. Im buying the retail this weekend, but dont think ill give up the copy i got from a certain famous bittorrent site

Not the same address used in the FA, which i guess is also the one on his site, maybe that one is just used for trolling people like us

The chair of the cs dept at my school had a lisa that he let us take apart. Hes an apple fanatic, so im sure the lisa was no longer working before he let us pass the parts around. Was kind of cool, though i was (somewhat) disappointed that nobody else in the class gave a shit. I wanted to reassemble it and power it on right there
Bitch all you want about DHS, but one of the things they do (are working on) is to make the gov't work more like a buisness, in the sharing of information for a common goal sense. They still make me laugh with the color coding, etc, but one of the underhearlded pluses of DHS.
Now ill put my TFH back on and worry about the spy satalites that i just know are up there. Thanks, mlb
September 30 2003, i believe it was. I was sooooo stoked about it coming out, and then there was this game "Deus ex: invisible war" and then this game "Unreal Tournament 2004" and then this other game "Doom 3"
And then i bought an xbox and only play ssx3 all night after work.
Of course ill play it. Of course it will rock. It just doesnt quite have the glow it used to. When it finally hits stores, it will be more like "lets see if all the damn hype was worth it"
and for the first time in months, no spam! Havent cleared it in days. Theres usually 100+ pieces in there, and now none! Not that this is evidence or anything, but interesting nonetheless...
Ill second that. I was a lifetime windows user, converted in oh, about 15 minutes. Now running debian unstable, but learned a lot from knoppix. I learned about apt-get a week or two later and it was a second revalation! couldnt be happier with my personal linux expirence (only if the doom3 linux binaries were released by now).
Oh, and I fix computers on the side for a little dough, and knoppix has saved MANY friends data after windows has gone a little wonky.
wouldnt mounting to/mnt have all kinds of bad reprocussions? I dont know, i remember reading someplace that it was bad (i think it was on the system recovery CD linux distro). but then again, im anal about my mount points...
My school did the same thing. Luckily i worked part time in IT, and the network guys knew that I knew how to lock down my wifi router, so they didnt bitch about mine. Now they even have a kid with a PDA go down the halls of the dorms and "war-walk". Luckily, they say they "dont support wifi" and that "you are responsible for everything on your connection" etc, etc, so they are more friendly than the school in the article.
Ive always been an nVidia fanboy, so to speak, due to problems with an old ATI Card i had back in 99. It still gets used for tv-in, and only under linux, but thats only thanks to the gatos guys. my gf ti4200 works great under linux for ut2k4. I've had both, used both under windows and linux, and nVidia is just all around better for what i need a video card for.
The problem with straight open source is a lot of people would spend time digging through the engine, trying to figure out how it all works, and never really improving on the idea. I like the idea of "Community Source" (like what garagegames does, though i dont think they call it by that name) Basically, most improvements are available within the community, who are all making games. The great thing about GG is that at the same time everyone is both helping each other, and yet each others competition. Again, this could work with open source, but the good thing about garagegames is that there is a $100 cover charge to get in, so you need to be at least a little serious.
nope, no better now. Took a UI class in the spring, and dear lord, even with RAD tools, i spent more time learning how to program a button than learning REAL UI issues. Of course, i was too cheap to buy the book, maybe thats why i had no idea what was going on.
a buddy of mine still plays ffVII nearly every day. Its hard to get him to come over and play tiger woods when he's "walking in squares"

its even better, with more options (up to 32 monitors?!)

The Demo for baulders gate 2 was 650 mb. in 2000-2001, whenever it came out. That was crazy back then
