Jeff tunnel (one of the founders of garagegames) talked about this the other day. He is working on a system to "pair up" people who need assistance developing games within the GG community (eg: programmers who need art, and vice versa). Also, gg has said that if your game is good enough, they'll work on getting it onto xbox and XBL. I really dont see how there could be a better way in the industry to get your indie game on a console.
I thought the same thing, or if sony just went and said "hey, stop down to EB/Best Buy/Wherever and pick up a ps3 today" the day before the 360 hits. THAT would be the funniest thing ever. Not that I wish microsoft any harm (well, maybe a little, but I do love my xbox), but that would just have my laughing for hours.
After 6 months of High wind in their sails, to have it knocked down, god that would be hilarious

Mine was tvtome.com before they got bought out and become tv.com. Now it is awful, but before it was the imdb for, um, tvshows.
specifically, i like snpp.com, for simpsons specific info.
Seconded. If nothing else, the money goes towards games for kids in hospitals. I dont see how anybody could argue against that. But, at a higher level, Youd be supporting the idea of gamers as upstanding, philanthropic human beings. Ill be donating enough for a DS or two this year, and hopefully ill get to have one of those kids whip my ass in mario kart DS online on Dec 25th.
I Loved the "style" in NPR quake. (google it if you are unfamiliar). It was the same game, but with a cool visual style.
On a slightly related note, I was playing SSX On Tour, and they did a great job with their menu presentation. The entire menu system looks like it was pulled straight from a bored high school students notebook. Quite neat, and im (very) suprised an EA developer could pull something so... creative off.
I thought i was the only one who noticed that. Ive lived in a few small towns in central/western NY, every EB ive been in has a manager just as you describe. Maybe it is a requirement...
Sorry, nope. I don't agree with the prices ebgames charges for used games (save $5! wooo), but theres no way they are going to get kickbacks off of that system. Record companies dont get any money from secondhand album sales. If i sell a videogame to a friend of mine, would I be obliged to send the publisher 10%?
It seems as he has lost touch with the people BUYING the games. I buy almost all of my games second hand (because they arent worth fullprice, usually). You got your money, let me have my fun
good point. I wonder if there is a usb tuner that could do the encoding, and be able to compress it enough such that the bandwidth limit on 1.1 isn't a big restriction.
Thats just kind of a whatif for me, since i dont have cable:)
My parents have a directivo, but my xbox doesn't make it to their house often. I do believe, but dont hold me to this, that there is/was a xbmc plugin for xbmc (xbmc is my media player of choice. every xbox owner should have it)
as far as reading the tivo streams, i have almost zero expirence with tivo, but it sounds like a cool solution.
Seconded. My answer is that I don't play fpses on the xbox (yet i keep buying them... odd), but there are a great number of non-fps games for the xbox. There is one exception: my PC wasn't good enough to play hl2 (well, maybe it was, on lowest settings), but i decided to wait till the xbox. Ill play that one, but im not drooooling waiting for it. All my friends loved it, so ill give it a spin. Ive tried deus EX:IW, serious sam, both halos, and a few others, but put them all down after just a few hours because "hey, this level would be cake with a kybd/mouse, the controller sucks"
only exception was jedi academy, which i finished, but really would have benefited from some kybd/mouse action.
the only problem I see is that most people wont "Get" them till christmas. If your parents buy you one, you gotta wait till xmas, and then games after that. But i suppose microsoft aleady has your money by then
Well, the only way around this that i have seen are twofold:
1: get a usb tv tuner that has linux drivers, and run linux on the ol xbox. Problem is, the usb is 1.1, not really fast enough for good quality. 2: mythtv. Run a myth frontend on the xbox while having another computer doing the backend recording someplace else in the house/apartment/whatever. This way you can record while watching another show and not worry about the horsepower of the xbox doing both those at once (if it would even be possible).
I considered the first option, but i had some previous expirence with USB tv tuners, and well, at 1.1 speeds it just plain sucks. I was thinking about option 2, then remembered im broke, so couldnt afford the cards needed and also dont have cable. So i never implemented it. Anyway, good luck and have fun hackin the xbox!
I AM nostalgic about smb3, etc. My last nintendo console was an n64, and I pretty much am planning on getting the new console from big N (along with a 360 at some point. Gotta have perfect dark).
I suppose They are really gonna be marketing it to 20-30 year olds who have grown up on their consoles. well, Ill bite:)
seconded. XBMC runs more often than games do on my xbox. I know they are including xbmc-like functionality in the 360, but that doesn't do me a bit of good, with my media files stored on a debian based server. Though, its not like my xbox is going to stop working the instant the 360 hits the street. I'll be fine till xbmc360 comes out:)
I dont sell my used games there, but i sure buy em. However, it is only the much older games (mostly xbox games in my case). I dont may more than $15 for a used title, so i avoid the $45 dollar used games they try to sell. Im always in EB, and it is easier than ebay/etc for me.
ive bought over 20 used games at my local EB, and ive spent less than $250 on em. i feel like i saved some cash, and didnt have to deal with the hassle of ebay/etc.
yes, i do think buying stuff on ebay is a hassle. Also, I work at a shipping company and know exactly what it costs to ship that stuff, and it is nowhere NEAR what the sellers try to charge.

oh, and this little thing called Linux

now THAT is either funny or scary... That the sent you to slashdot or full detials (funny) or scary, if you dont have an account and browse at -1...
After that, what other jokes are left?
well, i guess dakitana is funny to mention, and the phantom console...
au contraire on the "vice versa":
example 1: Goldeneye 007 on N64
example 2: I heard riddick was good, havent played it yet
alright, forget the second example, bond was good enough to break the mold. It can be done, but only by a good team that does something amazing.
I thought i was the only one who noticed that. Ive lived in a few small towns in central/western NY, every EB ive been in has a manager just as you describe. Maybe it is a requirement...
http://www.xbox-scene.com/articles/rf-power.php
remote RF power switch for xbox. Ive been wanting to do this.

First of all, hes got a massive ego, it seems. And secondly, hes out of his mind. Nothing else could explain it.
im not bad, per se, i just prefer kybd/mouse. i dont know what it is. I keep buying the games, so i like something about them, i guess :)
in theory, it is 12 mbps, but in pratice, the usb tuners ive used looked like ass
good point. I wonder if there is a usb tuner that could do the encoding, and be able to compress it enough such that the bandwidth limit on 1.1 isn't a big restriction.

Its working fine for me, just loaded it up (this story is right on top)
dunno what your problem would be
Indeed. hand never needs to leave the mouse. Brilliant!

at least they got SOMETHING working crossplatform :)
