Illegal File Formats?

Fraunhofers patent is on _their_ algorithm that can be used to create mp3. I don't violate any license from them by having mp3 files. If I use a piece of software that uses Fraunhofers _algorithm_ to encode an mp3, _then_ I owe them a royalty. There are encoders that do _not_ use Fraunhofers algo, for example Blade.
IANAL but I believe it's not a criminal offense, violating someone's patent. Using these formats in ways that violate patents isn't illegal, you will just get your ass sued off. There's no file format that can land you in jail.
Sheesh.... Okay, so you don't know but you think it might be alright. Thanks for clearing that up.
I never thought I'd see this question on/. And whats with the definitions of stuff in the headlines?
I know a guy that has 4 NT4SP5 servers that go for around 3 months before a reboot and he's incompetent. He just buys recommended HP's with NT installed. 1 box is file/printserver, 1 exchange, 1 webserver (intranet) 1 app server that has 6 users. This is for total ~60 users.
Dude you need a Neve or maybe an SSL, You can pick up a used Neve in good condition for about $50k US Of course if you don't care about the sound quality and want lotsa bells and whistles go for the SSL
Moderate Bastard Childs post way up this is what the original poster is asking for. Mackie posts are off topic. (I like mackie stuff but its not appropriate to the guys question)
Yes, Chumley, this is the key. Windows9x is 97% configured (albeit very poorly) out of the box. Who set up yer moms printer? Dial-up connection? Thats all that typically needs to be done after a default win9x install. If you have some funky hardware that win9x doesn't have a driver for (As in "Insert disk from manufacturer") add another step. It's true for the most part with win9x you don't need to know jack about your hardware, but the vast majority of systems come hot-loaded and include any drivers not included in the stock win9x distro.
When I hear this argument it always sounds to me like whoever is making it is putting forth that a day 1 win9x user can do everything except code and never has to press F1. Anybody who has a minor rep as a computer person will tell you this is a crock.
You are right that many people will avoid learning if at all possible but what you fail to acknowledge is that people _do_ have the capacity to learn, and even if learning is not their thing they still do get a sense of acheivement out of it.
Cuz it's more stable? - nah. Mom's computer rarely goes down and then its an exscuse for coffee.
So what you are saying? 1)Your moms computer _does_ crash or 2)Your mom rarely drinks coffee or 3)She's not doing any thing of consequence, so when it is time for a "coffee break" she's not losing any productivity.
All I know is I gave my 11 yo nephew a box with Linux installed and he's doing fine with it. FWIW this kid is about as far from self reliant as you can get. I had a sum total of 2 phonecalls the week I gave it to him. His mom, a Mac user, has no problems either. BTW They are using KDE...
Now what are they gonna do when its time to reinstall everything? Oh, yeah, I forgot, that doesn't happen with Linux
FWIW there _was_ a phonograph record sent out on a space probe, I forget which one. It left the solar system in the 80's. The record had nature sounds, a greeting in a number of languages and Chuck Berry's Johnny B. Goode. Its a fact. There was an old SNL weekend update piece that joked about aliens contacting the whitehouse and saying "Send more Chuck Berry!"
There was a link on/. to a story about how Micros~1 won't be able to deliver a version of Win2k Consumer edition targeted at el cheapo computers in time for christmas2k. In light of the fact that "LinModems" are now available (The article _did_ say they were available to OEMs) the article I provided the link to seems appropriate to read again.
As for MP3s and Hotline, I'm pretty sure more people run these on Windows than on all other OSs combined.
Err.. Are you serious? What you say is true, but it is meaningless. Change MP3 to "rubber tires", change Hotline to "gasoline" change Windows to "Ford Model T", OS to "automobile" then pretend it's 1930 when you say it.
Other than die-hard techies, I meet very few people who complain about windows because it can't stay up for 27 days.
Oddly enough, I meet many people who turn off the computer after 15 minutes because everything is cocked up and they think it must be something they did, when in reality the problem is garbage software. And I'm not just talking about Winders9x.
He knows how to get over on interns. I never met the man so I have to judge him by his public actions.

The fact is no one has used the Atlantic Ocean since 1492! Who needs it?
Don't know where you are, but around here we use the Atlantic Ocean everytime we go to the beach. Where do you think those fish sticks yer eating came from, Lake Erie?
Who gives a rats patoot what "a lot of people in the community" think, this is a marketing story the point is that linux is selling. People will pay money for the software. Which mean Linux has mindshare. And that means trouble for the people that currently make the most money. If you want to be pissy about OSS developers trying to gain mindshare away from Microsoft, you should think about how Microsoft contributed to the way things currently are. The current line is that all is fair in business so I guess it's tough tittie
It's nice to hear somebody mention Gimps lack of CMYK color without getting all rabid, like it makes Gimp totally useless. Everytime I hear that argument, I think about how many people _don't_ need CMYK. The cat in the article himself said 93% of web graphics use Photoshop. He also neglected to mention that a vast portion of amateur webmasters have _pirated_ copies of Photoshop.
As far as the vector graphics goes, try xfig. Its a stock item on any distro I ever used.
For people like yourself who _need_ CMYK and Pantone, yes, you are shit outta luck, but you are most likely using a Mac anyway (best tool for the job and all). If graphics are your bread and butter, its not such a big deal to spend $500 on software because it'll pay for itself. The majority of people, however would be paying $500 for a feature they will never use.
And if anybody say "But Gimp has no line tool fer crap sake!", the bezier tool does that.

The guy was saying $200 was more than he wanted to spend. If you could get a mackie for like $50 then maybe that might be what he was looking for.
That's total BS, they said that because routers are voodoo to the average MS "power luser".
