    Fraunhofers patent is on _their_ algorithm that can be used to create mp3.
    I don't violate any license from them by having mp3 files.
    If I use a piece of software that uses Fraunhofers _algorithm_ to encode an mp3, _then_ I owe them a royalty.
    There are encoders that do _not_ use Fraunhofers algo, for example Blade.

    IANAL but I believe it's not a criminal
    offense, violating someone's patent. Using
    these formats in ways that violate patents
    isn't illegal, you will just get your ass sued
    off. There's no file format that can land you
    in jail.

    Sheesh.... Okay, so you don't know but you think it might be alright.

    I know a guy that has 4 NT4SP5 servers
    that go for around 3 months before a reboot
    and he's incompetent. He just buys recommended
    HP's with NT installed.
    1 box is file/printserver,
    1 exchange, 1 webserver (intranet)
    1 app server that has 6 users.
    This is for total ~60 users.

    But who set it all up?

    Yes, Chumley, this is the key. Windows9x is 97%
    configured (albeit very poorly) out of the
    box. Who set up yer moms printer? Dial-up
    connection? Thats all that typically needs to be
    done after a default win9x install.
    If you have some funky hardware that win9x doesn't
    have a driver for (As in "Insert disk from
    manufacturer") add another step.
    It's true for the most part with win9x you don't need
    to know jack about your hardware, but the vast
    majority of systems come hot-loaded and include
    any drivers not included in the stock win9x distro.

    When I hear this argument it always sounds to me like
    whoever is making it is putting forth that a day 1
    win9x user can do everything except code and never
    has to press F1. Anybody who has a minor rep
    as a computer person will tell you this is a crock.

    You are right that many people will avoid
    learning if at all possible but what you fail to acknowledge
    is that people _do_ have the capacity to learn,
    and even if learning is not their thing
    they still do get a sense of acheivement out of it.

    Cuz it's more stable? - nah. Mom's computer
    rarely goes down and then its an
    exscuse for coffee.


    So what you are saying?
    1)Your moms computer _does_ crash
    or
    2)Your mom rarely drinks coffee
    or
    3)She's not doing any thing of consequence,
    so when it is time for a "coffee break" she's not
    losing any productivity.

    All I know is I gave my 11 yo nephew a box with
    Linux installed and he's doing fine with it.
    FWIW this kid is about as far from self reliant
    as you can get. I had a sum total of
    2 phonecalls the week I gave it to him.
    His mom, a Mac user, has no problems either.
    BTW They are using KDE...

    Now what are they gonna do when its time to reinstall everything?
    Oh, yeah, I forgot, that doesn't happen with Linux

    FWIW there _was_ a phonograph record sent out on a space probe, I forget which one. It left the solar system in the 80's. The record had nature sounds, a greeting in a number of languages and Chuck Berry's Johnny B. Goode. Its a fact. There was an old SNL weekend update piece that joked about aliens contacting the whitehouse and saying "Send more Chuck Berry!"

    There was a link on /. to a story about how Micros~1 won't be able to deliver a version of Win2k Consumer edition targeted at el cheapo computers in time for christmas2k. In light of the fact that "LinModems" are now available (The article _did_ say they were available to OEMs) the article I provided the link to seems appropriate to read again.

    Err.. Are you serious? What you say is true, but it is meaningless. Change MP3 to "rubber tires", change Hotline to "gasoline" change Windows to "Ford Model T", OS to "automobile" then pretend it's 1930 when you say it.

    Other than die-hard techies, I meet very few
    people who complain about windows
    because it can't stay up for 27 days.


    Oddly enough, I meet many people who turn off the computer after 15 minutes because everything is cocked up and they think it must be something they did, when in reality the problem is garbage software. And I'm not just talking about Winders9x.

    Who gives a rats patoot what "a lot of people in the community" think, this is a marketing story the point is that linux is selling. People will pay money for the software. Which mean Linux has mindshare. And that means trouble for the people that currently make the most money. If you want to be pissy about OSS developers trying to gain mindshare away from Microsoft, you should think about how Microsoft contributed to the way things currently are. The current line is that all is fair in business so I guess it's tough tittie

    It's nice to hear somebody mention Gimps lack of CMYK color without getting all rabid, like it makes Gimp totally useless. Everytime I hear that argument, I think about how many people _don't_ need CMYK. The cat in the article himself said 93% of web graphics use Photoshop. He also neglected to mention that a vast portion of amateur webmasters have _pirated_ copies of Photoshop.

    As far as the vector graphics goes, try xfig. Its a stock item on any distro I ever used.

    For people like yourself who _need_ CMYK and Pantone, yes, you are shit outta luck, but you are most likely using a Mac anyway (best tool for the job and all). If graphics are your bread and butter, its not such a big deal to spend $500 on software because it'll pay for itself. The majority of people, however would be paying $500 for a feature they will never use.

    And if anybody say "But Gimp has no line tool fer crap sake!", the bezier tool does that.
