I disagree. I believe people are the only real check on the media. If the media is a check on the government and the government is a check on the media, you wind up with no checks and you can forget about balance. The responsibility to monitor the media falls squarely on we the people, and most of us are too busy (or at least think we are) and/or complacent for the job.

Yes, unless they have a proper warrant, legally issued by an actual judge. Refer to the 4th amendment.

Would your opinion change if the Police had a warrant?

A warrant means oversight. I'm fine with that. Again, refer to the 4th.

If you daughter were kidnapped, would you protest them using her cel phone to track her?

My only protest is that you are resorting to emotions instead of continuing intelligent debate. In any case, it's a clear non-sequitur (and poorly laid trap) and has no place in the discussion.

Quite frankly, if you use third party libraries that fall outside your coding conventions (and you are absolutely right - most or all do), you should adapt them. Create your own interfaces and make disparate libraries appear no different than the rest of your system. This simple tactic will cost you minimal overhead up front (interface design) with a huge savings in maintainability down the road (refactor to your own interfaces). If you are programming directly to third party APIs you are just asking for trouble.

Neither, both. There is no way you or I will ever truly know because like most humans, we are limited by our own experience. How often do you actually wonder what a frog thinks? Or, for that matter, how much time do you invest in wondering what your fellow man thinks? Perhaps you are merely focusing on what you think?

We are not a complacent species.

Oh yes, we are. Take a good look at any human society and tell me honestly it's not rife with complacency. Coerced or otherwise, it's there. There are more than enough examples in every society of every era for me to have to explain this.

You seem to let technology fool you into believing you are better or wiser than other species. How superior are you really when you need a machine to do something a mere fish or bird can do naturally? (By the way, are you a pilot? Hope so. Otherwise you are just as complacent as the rest of us passengers). On that note, try to imagine what would happen to humanity were we to run out of energy to power these machines. How long do you think we'd survive?
