If rehabilitation were not one of the goals, why let them back out? Wouldn't it be assumed they would simply revert back to their criminal ways? I think under those circumstances, criminals would have been locked up for good, regardless of the crime.

It isn't about revenge. The hope is that the system will try to rehabilitate. Revenge only teaches a criminal to be more careful and/or armed.

Run Visual Studio in a VM on your Linux desktop and call it even. :)

In all seriousness, do whatever will result in producing the best code. If that means using Visual Studio, for whatever reason, stick with it. IMO, the amount of time you save in a familiar environment makes up for the extra work ensuring your code builds elsewhere. However, you may have a few more hoops to jump through to make sure that code actually runs elsewhere.

Would be nice if it automatically generated make files too

If you use VS 2005 or later, you can easily transform the project file (which is just a MSBuild file) into anything you want. For example, you might output a simple NAnt script, which could be a quick and dirty way to target multiple platforms (NAnt will run on Mono).

If you use VS 2003 or earlier, upgrade.

  13. Re:Speed on Panasonic To Ship Form Factor-Standard Blu-ray Drive · · Score: 4, Informative
    From blu-ray.com:

How fast can you read/write data on a Blu-ray disc?

According to the Blu-ray Disc specification, 1x speed is defined as 36Mbps. However, as BD-ROM movies will require a 54Mbps data transfer rate the minimum speed we're expecting to see is 2x (72Mbps). Blu-ray also has the potential for much higher speeds, as a result of the larger numerical aperture (NA) adopted by Blu-ray Disc. The large NA value effectively means that Blu-ray will require less recording power and lower disc rotation speed than DVD and HD-DVD to achieve the same data transfer rate. While the media itself limited the recording speed in the past, the only limiting factor for Blu-ray is the capacity of the hardware. If we assume a maximum disc rotation speed of 10,000 RPM, then 12x at the outer diameter should be possible (about 400Mbps). This is why the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) already has plans to raise the speed to 8x (288Mbps) or more in the future.
