While I applaud the ingenuity of all involved, I must say I've seen more clever and useful ideas at the occasional high-school science fair.
1. The chemical composition of lunar surface material has been known for quite some time.
2. It would literally be child's play to produce a workable cement or concrete mixture from the regolith. Absolutely high-school chemistry.
3. Thermal curing is self-evident.
4. (Kudos, I suppose, for using a wire down the middle of a brick to compensate for the lack of a thermally conductive medium, like an atmosphere.)
5. Why would one ever consider using bricks on the moon? I can't think of a less-logical building material for the lunar environment. The less seams in your construct, the better.
I understand that the curing method could easily be applied to larger modules, if not whole structures at once. You could 'cure' an entire building at once, for example, if you designed it the right way.
But the article seems to be going out of it's way to focus on the manufacture of 'bricks'; which to me means 'mortar', which to me means 'seams', and that rhymes with 'means', there will be trouble in Lunar City.
The only game I can think of that I couldn't get to run in XP, would be Wizards and Warriors, the cRPG by D.W. Bradley... I play a LOT of old games, and other than the mandatory DosBox, nothing special is needed to run 99.99% of Dos/Win 3.1/95/98/ME/2000/ games in XP.
XP is easily the friendliest os ever for pc gamers, imo.
I remember reading this article: http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/10.04/strategies.html in the months after 9/11... and the phrase that stuck with me from it, was that the "US will commodify your discontent, sell it back to you on DVD."
At the time I took this to mean that the almost overwhelming cultural power of the United States (I am not American.), would eventually embrace and replace all others, because that would always be the most profitable course of action. While it certainly does mean this in part, watching the ascent of Barack Obama (I would not vote for Mr. Obama.) on a global level has caused me to re-evaluate Mr. Sterling's words.
By electing Obama, I see the ultimate example of the United States co-opting the worlds discontent. Because after his seemingly inevitable election, it's not the United States that will have no more excuses to hide behind, but the rest of the world that will have run out of straw-men to blame for their own, self-made dilemmas.
You wanted the Unites States to be led by 'one of you'? Bam, you got it. Now you can stop blaming the Unites States for all the worlds ills, and take some responsibility for yourselves for a change. That would be most welcome.
May he actually live up to the impossible, messianic expectations... why would any rational person hope otherwise? Make sure to buy the DVD.
Soon they'll be breeding us like cattle! You've got to warn everyone and tell them! Scientology is made of people! You've got to tell them! Scientology is people!
[izabael.com] Seriously? On Slashdot? Goetic Demons?
"Izabael the genie-demon is my connection to Nuit who is my Goddess. It is by the light of her stars that I find my way through the wild fields of my rampant and ravenous hunger."
Seriously?
I'm sorry. This level of narcissism is not harmless. Your reality is incorrect.
... to say that I and a few friends wrote letters and made phone calls this week from our igloos. We Canadians get feisty when you pull this kind of garbage. A battle to be fought again in the coming months though.
Privacy, Fair Use, Free Speech, etc aside.. the positive effect completely overhauling all copyright law would have on the economy would be great. 20-year limit on all rights with an option to renew for another 20 under special conditions. And nothing more.
In a proper and decent world, men like Robert Bussard would be heroes to our children, and household names that have high schools named after them... his concept of a fusion ramjet, the Bussard Ramjet, from Known Space and other places... is still the only realistically viable idea for intersteller travel...
IANANP... would love someone who is to break this video and it's ideas down... would it work?
An AC, quoting a semi-satirical internet meme... well done, sir. I have indeed been put in my place.
YouTube/Google had a choice. They chose the course of action that benefited what is essentially a lobby group for corrupt lawyers and executives... vampires, one and all.
Google has made much of their claim to not 'be evil'. They brought the subject up, not I.
Oh, and nice touch invoking the DMCA to defend your position... ahem.
A simple consensus for what is good, would be that which is for the greater good. Yes, the nature of good (and evil) is open to interpretation. Feel free.
Is supporting the RIAA in this instance for the greater good? This too, is open to interpretation; but upon some thought I cannot see a countervailing argument. How is Mr. Sandercore's usage of copyrighted material not fair? How is it not fair use? His technical expertise is his product. The music merely a medium, no different than paper.
(Perhaps it could be said then that plagiarism is then like copying this figurative paper?)
If I remember correctly, Google had a mantra of some form.... a simple, guiding philosophy.
Something like, "Don't be evil.".
While certainly not the first occurrence, this is a perfectly clear example of Google siding with behavior and opinion which are not in the cause of the greater good. Instinctively, and more important logically, this is obvious.
It can have all the style and charm of the first two games, but if they fiddle with the combat mechanics and move to a twitchy, real-time mode of gameplay... this will make Vault Boy shed radioactive tears.
I've always felt that turn-based combat is what's really lacking in most modern games that disappoint... there are people that play tennis, and there are people that play chess; both great games, but the people who are drawn to crpgs tend to be looking for something a little more like chess, imo.
I play these games to relax and escape... being able to sit and think about my next move, is a luxury unavailable in real-life most of the time.
Here's hoping for turn-based combat remaining in the game.
The actual pushing of the buttons and moving of the mouse must be fun, in and of itself. WoW has that, in a fashion arguably better than in any other game I've ever played. It's so intuitive... you can feel the lessons learned over 10+ years of making great games.
War/Starcraft was FUN to play. Diablo was FUN to play.
Oblivion, NWN2, Gothic 3... all admirable in some distinct way, but none of them are all that fun to play, really. With Oblivion it's the combat. With NWN2 it's the camera and lack of autopause. With G3 it's a lotta things...
WoW is mechanically beatiful, and a joy to interface with.

My IQ has been tested almost a dozen times in my life. I was barely 4 years old when it started. Stanford-Binet. Mensa. Etc. The scores have ranged from a low of 187 to a high of 204.
I am that smart.

Too soon?
Someone should tell Tchaikovsky...
Pew!
If you have fond memories of names like Ultima, Wizardry, and Might and Magic, you should really check this game out...
I forgot just how much I loved true turn-based gameplay... games are supposed to be fun... it's always been tremendous fun to stop time...
Not a shill, but this is my game of the year. A great first attempt.

Anything more is criminal.
... books have chapters?
The idea of a smaller unit(s) making up a larger whole is a very, very powerful organizational motif... it goes deep.

welcome our new Muslim overlords!
Wait, what?
"Kim Jong Il may be a bit of a narcissist, with a Napoleon complex, but he's hardly "insane." "

Nope. He's insane.
Hear, hear.
4. All we have is each other...
1. There is no God.
2. There is no such thing as global warming.
3. Humanity is completely unimportant.
Does anyone understand physics anymore? Does anyone out there understand what a light-year really means? What a million years really means??
It's not the stupidity that bothers me... it's the willful ignorance.
