I honestly have NO idea what you are talking about. I have a 7 something MDK box that has been the main file server on my network having an uptime of damn near a year now. My MDK 8.2 (started life as 8.0) has been rock solid for over a year (reboots for hardware swaps, and even a total case swap (I bought one of them Lian-Li PC-60's... w00t!)).

Anyway. I have been playing with a few other distros too. I'm typing on a SuSE box, my Gentoo box is compiling KDE3.0.2 right now, and the RedHat machine to my right is sitting with a kernel panic.

I'd move on to say "MS-NBC" (with that emphisis). Then ask him if he thought it was REAL news.

Aside, that site is supposed to be the "real" news. /. is just a portal. The "real" news is saying Linux is dead. Funny. I'm typing this on a SuSE box, while I have an MDK machine under this desk (and at home), with a RH laptop next to me and a Gentoo machine behind me.

This echos my thoughts exactly. This is not "creating" something, this is a large group of talented folks getting together and doing something one way to atain a singular goal... the SAME WAY. This can only be good.

It's like if you read LWN, for instance, and you see RH security announcement, or SuSE patch available, or MDK release of Foo available, etc. Now, with these bigger players (MDK excluded from that, obviously) sharing all their ideas and findings, there is MUCH less confusion (in theory, of course) and certainly MUCH less hunting and pecking the Internet trying to make sure your distro is "safe". It'll now just be "United Linux security update for Foo released".

    SO much easier.

I see your point, but I just thought that I'd point out that you can not use a camcorder (or anything along those lines) in a mall. The local mall has a little play area for kids. I take my Son there from time to time. After about 2 minutes of filming my Son running around and stuff, one of the security guards came over and (kindly) told me to turn it off immediatly. I complied, but asked why. He went on to say that because the Mall is private properly, in order to film in there, I would have to get permission from the owners of the mall.

Just thought I'd point that out. Still, you do make a good point.

I've been using MDK for a couple years now. I now own the SuSE 8.0 Pro Pack (I don't have anything major against RH, it's just too Band Wagon-ish for my tastes). I clean installed that on the machine I'm typing on, but because I have my /home in it's own mount point, I haven't missed many beats. OK, I did the right thing and mv'ed my .kde dir to a different name so I would have a REALLY clean install, but I've since restored everything. Simple.
