I tolerate (and keep my domains at) GoDaddy because I just can't be bothered to go trough the turmoils of migrating all my stuff (DNS, Web hosting, some e-mail boxes) somewhere else for something which I consider will (or will not happen) no matter what GoDaddy thinks of it.

  4. Us vs Them on Given Truth, the Misinformed Believe Lies More · · Score: 2, Insightful

This is a problem with pretty much every political issue there is. You have to pick a side eventually. Very few people are truly neutral as far as political spectrum goes. You are leaning either to the right or to the left. The problem is that when you finally pick your side (early twenties, typically) it becomes natural to stick to it no matter what new information comes your way and you end up in a "us versus them" kind of position. You see everything that doesn't make your side look good as propaganda or media bias. I think politics can be compared to professional sports in many ways in the sense that science, data and morality have basically nothing to do with who you are rooting for.

  8. Re:Yep on The Design Failures That Led To Rock Band · · Score: 1

Another fun thing, the drums in Rock Band is actually decent training for real drums

I have to disagree here. I've been playing the drums for 15 years and I just can't play drums in Rock Band. Drums have a very improvised and intuitive nature in the way that you don't necessarily have to play the thing exactly the same way every time, especially in rock and jazz music. The kick in Rock Band is pretty much randomly placed which makes it very difficult for a real drummer to follow the visual cues of the song. Basically, I have a tendencie to try and play the real thing when the game does everything but...

The guitars on the other hand, I find are very fun to play, even if I do play some real guitar in life. Of course it is nothing like the real thing but the picking patterns make it "feel" more realistic and "musical".

  9. 24 hours in a day on Staying In Shape vs. a Busy IT Job Schedule? · · Score: 1

Looking at the previous comments, everyone seems to agree that there are only 24 hours in any given day. Staying in shape takes about 1 of those 24 hours about every other day. In the end it's all about choices. Is it really worth it sacrificing your health for some shity night shift?

    Ok, not that helpfull...

You say you need time to "unwind", well my friend, to me anyway; working out IS unwinding. It makes even the most stressful day seem a little bit better just knowing that I still managed to do something good for ME. It's also been demonstrated (citation needed) that healthy people get promoted faster, talk about killing two birds with one stone... Taking your health seriously could indirectly get you out of that shitty job one day!

    (disclaimer: I am Canadian)

From what I see here in Canada. Global warming and human's contribution to it is a dogma now. Its not even something people argue about any more. It's like questioning it or it's real impact a crime or something. You wan't to look good in Canada? Easy, just spit out stuff you got from the media in front of the camera. I find it very ironic that people get sympathy points by making statements from the TV in the TV about global warming. This holds espacially true if you are an musician or a comedian or a sporting figure. Hey look at me! I can play the guitar so I definitally am a huge reference on chaotic meteorology systems!

  13. Re:why is this a problem? on Microsoft's Open Source Guru Faces Tough Fight · · Score: 1

Linux on the desktop is closing the gap how? As of today, Linux's market share is still 0.89% (Ref.: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usage_share_of_operating_systems/). Right now, it is slighhtly over Windows 98. Now, you also made the point that someday, someone will package Linux nicely, market the hell out of it and give it away for free. Where would the ROI be for them to do such a thing? An operating system is not a place where you just stick a bunch of targeted ads in the hope of generating revenue. Marketing is not free. While living in a Linux-compatible world was a nice dream ten years ago, I think its time to take a look at reality and see that it is great at what it does (servers, research) but is still a niche operating system (that I personnaly use and love). I think Microsoft does indeed have an interest in Open Source for the parts of it that they can benefit from. I can't even figure out why everyone thinks there is a war going on. There isn't. It's just a big company trying to get bigger by leveraging the ideas of others, not because they are evil, just because they can.

  14. Cisco console! on What To Do With Old Laptops? · · Score: 1

Since most newer laptops don't have a serial port, I always keep an aging laptop connected to my switches, routers and firewalls (via serial interface). It saved my ass a few time after an "ip route" command gone bad kicked me out. It sure beats going down the datacenter in a hurry.

Sure IE isn't dead yet but by not working with standards, by being overly invasive, by being integrated into the OS and several other mistakes that they REFUSE to correct, they are doing their best to kill it. It's like they are doing there best to ignore the public outcry while cramming something else down there throats.

What public outcry? Half a million slashdot users complaining ON SLASHDOT is really not that many people compared to what I would guess BILLIONS internet explorer installs troughout the world. I know it's not really good nor ethical but software ethics and quality are not something people who matter care about.

  25. Re:Discussion? on Viruses May be the Precursors of All Life · · Score: 1

Even here in Canada. I heard I.D. mentionned in the news a total of TWO times, and it was about it making the news in the U.S. In fact, if it was not for slashdot, I wouldn't even know there is a debate going in over there! I find it rediculous, most USians do too, aparently. I think it's a shame that it had to come down to this but it's hard to take any christian seriously when I hear stuff like that.

I know it's just a crazy few who give the others a bad name, just like a few crazy muslims go out and burn down a KFC because of a joke. Can't people see what irrational thinking leads to? Where is this going to stop? I used to think science would put an end to religious rivalery: we have a better explanation to pretty much everything that religions try to "explain". I'm still hoping that in another twenty year, people will ba able to live the fact that someday, they will die, disgusting worms will eat their bowels, a tree will grow out of it, and apples too, circle of life! It's obvious to anyone thinking clearly. If it can make some people feel better about themselves to think that maybe, something else awaits them (free virgins in paradise), well, actually I wish I believed in something; life would be easier if I could base my choices on WWJD.

Anyway, back to my point, good old darwinism will take care of all this: the best "theory" will win in the long run and people will stop petty arguments about it.
