Back when the pound Sterling blew out of ERM (Exchange Rate Mechanism, a way of converging currencies and having them float within a narrow band relative to one another, a precursor to the introduction of the euro), around 1992 or 1993 I think, the Irish pound was briefly the highest valued single currency unit in the world. We celebrated until we realized what it would do to our export-driven economy!;-)
