That's an outrage. I think all children should threaten to blow up buildings from the middle east. Think of the taxpayer dollars we'd save if we just send our kids over there with explosives and let them-- oh, wait a minute. We do do that. We just give them uniforms now.

My personal instinct is to the left, but I saw a comment on the CIF section of www.guardian.co.uk recently that I feel is relevant; a US poster, in response to a UK poster saying certain actions were "wrong", retorted with "Wrong? Right? It doesn't matter. Staying alive and winning matter."
And he was right.
We had this in Ireland in the 1980s...

...and it was called Cooperation North; we'd twin with "Norn Iron" nationalist troublespots (in our case, Andersonstown in West Belfast), go up there for a couple of weeks, learn how to make molotovs to throw at the Sasanach on the anniversary of the introduction of internment, on Easter Sunday, on Bloody Sunday, etc.
Such fun! But the chance of a live round being sent back our way convinced those of us from the Republic that throwing petrol bombs isn't something to do for entertainment in the long term.
I used to work for Enterprise Rent-A-Car... they were naming iSeries and Sun servers after some cheesy thing like superheros or whatever. One day, I was honored to be allowed to name a new series of servers. My first suggestion was "Ted" (as in Bundy). Serial killer server names! Nobody saw the humor in it and I wasn't asked again.
He referred to her as his bride, which suggests to me that he's posting to Slashdot during his wedding. I mean, once married, he'd call her his wife, wouldn't he?
That her MacBook rebooted "unexpectedly" is the least of his worries... I'd say lose the crippling/. habit first.
Now Ernest, I can understand your frustration as a Kiwi with being lumped in with the Aussies. But I can do you one better; I'm Irish, worked in Frankfurt for years. In conversation with a colleague there, Volker, one day, he said something to the effect about 'you British'. I pointed out to him that the the Republic of Ireland is NOT part of the UK, and hasn't been for almost 90 years. He disgested this, then said, 'Oh, I didn't really understand that. But you lot are very similar anyway, and you all live on that ONE island...' I was gobsmacked. He never noticed that there are two islands right there, Britain and Ireland.
I don't think so either. The punishment is far in excess of the alleged crime -- the poor guy won't last 10 minutes inside. If I were in his position I'd seriously consider killing myself.
Part of that island kingdom is Northern Ireland, which shares a land border with the Republic of Ireland. Our psychos used to enjoy taking potshots across the border at the paras in South Armagh, mostly. Got a few of 'em too, if I recall correctly. And you lot sought their extradition, and rightly so. It does apply. Or if you're referring to England, well there's a border with Scotland, isn't there? Different legal systems? So again, it would apply.
Romanians have no inherent advantage over other nationalities to be "brilliant programmers". They're cheap, that's the advantage, same as India, same as China, same as Russia, seem as Ireland and Israel used to be. Not to mention American programmers, who (at least in the non OS world) seem to be quite successful.
Don't believe the hype. There are "brilliant" programmers everywhere.
Couldn't agree more, this sh!t wouldn't fly in Ireland, that's for sure. I was astonished at how generic the ads were, once I got over the annoyance of seeing medicines marketed to people's desires, as opposed to their needs. "Ask your doctor if you should *add* BigPharmaProduct#9!" Okay, maybe I will, but what the heck does it do?
That didn't happen, literally. It took weeks if not months to replace them all. What actually happened was that there was a campaign of education about the switchover, which went on for some time, and in parallel the signs were being supplemented with metric signs. The old Imperial signs are still there, they are just slowly being taken down. The only thing that happened "overnight" was a law mandating all of this.
You said they were recent grads. I know what to expect from a recent grad. If the argument was purely about experience, Draper'd win. But with the other factors... would rather deal with your "three grads".
"misunderstood engineer"? Please, spare me. Social incompetent, more like. Probably bi-polar, or borderline b.p. His problems are his own. What's to "understand"? That he has B.O. and refuses to behave like a normal person? I'm an intelligent guy too, with reasonable skills, both social and technical. I suppose I'm misunderstood too, since I am merely middle-class and comfortable as opposed to wealthy like Steve Jobs. Who should I blame, please? And where's my payoff?
Hear, hear. Although I believe it's P.C. to call it "bipolar disorder" these days. Just walked away from a good friend after three years of struggling to help him as his mania caused him to lose jobs, steal things, cheat on and beat on his girlfriend, break and steal my things, physically assault people, etc.
He's bipolar and won't take his meds. I'm done. It's a shame, but his illness makes him an asshole and he refuses to address it. I'm DONE. Especially after he tried to ruin my marriage -- dave420, you have no fucking clue what you're talking about. You sound like an over-sheltered, young fool.
There's no excuse for a lack of personal hygiene. If I were his boss I'd speak to him pretty quickly about it and fire him if he didn't start bathing regularly. And what of his coworkers? Maybe YOU don't mind if he smells like old sweat and shit, but his colleagues who share cubicle-land with him might.
Perhaps he should stick to non-smoking venues, then. I'm allergic to peanuts but I don't yell at every person I see eating them. It's my responsibility to avoid them, not theirs.
Oh no, it didn't happen overnight. Last time I visited, we still had dual signage for roads, etc. That transition began when I was a youngster (70s) and was still going on in the 90s/00s.
Pints are still used in Ireland too. I think publicans in Britain and Ireland had a "dispensation" because these were traditional measurements that were very dear to people, and so they stay.

I'm currently feeling quite gruntled, and I have to say it feels a lot like when I'm chuffed.

These park-bots are everywhere in Germany. Many moons ago (1994) my building in Ruesselsheim (Opelstadt!), Germany, had one in the basement.

Gah! My bad. I read schizophrenia, saw "manic depression". Yes, you are of course correct. Totally different diseases.
Or perhaps it's like claiming that hanging around with people who throw punches can lead to being on the receiving end of one?
Besides, until smoking is outlawed, it's Drapers problem. If smoking is legal in a place and he still yells at smokers, that's his problem.
The three CompSci grads, please. Cheaper, easier to deal with, no "social" issues (unless we chose to let those slip by the selection process).

Yup, no grammes of weed over here, a la the low countries. Never thought about that... why metric for charlie?
