Great post. I'm sure it's been stated before, but the fear that most people feel when something fucks up on their computer is the biggest reason they won't change once they learn a certain system.
I learned the same way you did, breaking things and then trying to figure out what I did. One other thing, though. When I was learning, there were no help menus and no modem to dial up to a support bulletin board. You had to read the manual. That's a habit that has helped me more than anything over the years.
Nope. If OJ was making $20,000 a year instead of being a football star, an all black jury would have fried his ass. It was more about fame and money than race, IMHO.

I'm pretty sure that the ideal cadence isn't exactly the same for each rider. You'll recall that Armstrong lost a lot of weight after he recovered from cancer. That made him a less powerful rider, but it also meant that he didn't have to haul as much weight uphill. Those riders do some very specific studies to figure out what their ideal cadence for maximum output is. It's really very interesting.
I can't tell you how happy I am to see shitty haiku instead of the other traditional slashdot crapfloods. Microsoft wasn't mentioned here, so why bring it up?
To be fair to Microsoft, they have usually done a pretty good job with their hardware. I still have one of their joysticks kicking around, and I've NEVER had one of those last more than 8 or 9 months, the Microsoft one is going on 3 years now. I think the big problem with the Xbox is going to be the fact that hardware and software have to interact, and that hasn't really been Microsoft's strong suit.

We might stop the parties and the impromptu parades that seem to have broken out with Palestinians cheering and waving flags. The worst part is, on the news feed that I saw, it was 80% children doing it. Nothing like a group of fanatics in training.
How many Muslims were in those buildings today? Say a prayer for them too. I don't think they went to work today expecting to die either.
Edmonton International has three flights on the Tarmac that originated in London, and were due to fly into San Francisco, according to my family that is there.
You might want to reconsider the my way or the highway approach, especially with all the unemployed techies out there. I wouldn't try it this way unless I had another job waiting for me.
No kidding you've never travelled outside your country. Have you ever tried to talk to an INS officer? It's like talking to the Gestapo when you've got 20 Jew or Gypsies or Russians or Homosexuals in your attic.
...Or hear in the news. My wife works at a PR firm, and she has WRITTEN the core of entire goddam stories that end up under a reporters name. Quotes are also routinely made up by PR people...it's sickening. I still love her though, even though she's doing the devils work:)
I mean, look what happens when a Howard Stern fan calls in during the OJ situation...you have this guy sounding as hickish as he possibly can, and making comments that don't make any sense, and Peter Jennings eats it up. 99% of the people on television are toast without a teleprompter.
For that matter, here's another pet peeve...how come the media always asks actors what their political views are. Why do the opinions of a guy who never has a thought in his mind, a guy who's job is to do and act and feel and say what someone else tells him to, why do they ask him?
As for users, they have a job and it isn't to play around with their computers. The machine is a tool, and if it does what they need (word processing, spreadsheets, etc), then that's all there is to it.
Give me a break. You go in and take people's desktops at most companies, and the bitching and whining would be so loud that the building would shake. I work at a small office with about 30 people, and even though most of the office is using K6-2 300Mhz processors and 15 inch monitors, they would still bitch. I wouldn't, and 2 or 3 others might not, but the rest would. They like having pictures of their kids, winamp, and all sorts of other assorted downloaded resource sucking shit running. They NEED to feel like they have control over their computer. And you know what? They don't care if the IT guy likes it or not. It keeps them happy so they can work.

Bloom County was the reason I did so well in History class way back when. I remember reading strips about Ed Meese and Caspar Weinberger, and then having to go to the library and find a Time magazine or Newsweek to figure out who they were. I really miss those comic strips. I still pull out those books from time to time, have a couple of beers and stay up laughing until 4 in the morning. The closest thing I've found to replace it is The Boondocks

The TiBooks and a high end Dell laptop are competing a bit on price though. I didn't realize how much hardware $2500 can get you nowadays. I'm not saying choice is bad, but imagine if a linux distro cost you $600 to get your hands on. That's what buying a desktop Mac is like. Sure, if you REALLY need it, it's worth it. The big question is, how many people need a Mac that bad? I wouldn't buy any of the other computers that Mac is listed against in that link anyway. Complete ripoffs. You have to realize, my $2500 gets me a 21" monitor. None of the computers in that runoff come with monitors.
Having said that, if I was buying a new notebook today, I'd be taking a long hard look at that TiBook.

For $2500, I can put together a 1.4Ghz Athlon with 512MB of RAM, a Pioneer DVD writer, GeForce 3 video, 60GB Hard Drive, 21 inch monitor, and Windows 2000. If you want to drop the DVD writer, you can go SCSI....unless you REALLY want or need OS X, a Mac just isn't worth it.

Anyone else find it ironic that a guy who never uses a commercial plane to fly anymore is concerned about airport security?

All media is propaganda.
So the workers in the rest of the company are only there to make the IT department happy? Ah, maybe I've got it backwards....
