  1. More good news for DirecTV users on Comparing the DVRs? · · Score: 1
You can get a DirecTivo for about $99 now. Circuit City, Best Buy are selling the Hughes model for dirt cheap. The wife wanted me to get another receiver so we could put a tv in the living room, and I was shocked to find out that for $50 more I could get a Tivo :)

I've had since Friday night, and I love it. Still just playing with it though. It's great to be able to pause a movie on HBO to get up and take a leak.

Instead of fixing the software though, you get an "update", which means that you pay through the nose one more time to possibly get something that may work a bit better than the old stuff you were using.

Another example... I'm in the car with my brother in law at a McDonald's drive through. We ordered, and the guy at the window asks us to pull to the side and wait for our order. We both wondered why, it wasn't busy, and there was only one car behind us. The guy in the window tells us it was because the fries weren't ready. My brother in law says, "Did the guy behind us order fries?" The dude in the windows says he did. The car goes into park, and my brother in law says, "Since he's getting fries too, we'll wait for them here". Mysteriously, they appeared about 5 seconds later.

If a corporation accused me of murder? I'd fight that. If they accuse me of piracy, and trot out a bunch of laws that most people haven't heard of, with letters from lawyers who make more in a week than I do in a year? That might be different.

It hasn't happened to me, but I can certainly understand why people do. Just look at Macfixit story from yesterday. Should they have taken that down? No, but I can understand why they did. It's easy to be brave if it hasn't happened to you, I guess.

Right now, it's like playing poker with a shitty hand when you know that the other guy has a royal flush. You'd be an idiot not to fold. I'd love to see the EFF cause the deck to be shuffled a bit.

No, what would happen is that the little guy that stood up will be paying off laywer bills for the rest of his life or going bankrupt. Then there is the worst case, getting convicted for "piracy" and getting thrown in the clink for a few years.

I'm hoping that will start to change now with the EFF acting a bit like the ACLU does, but it might be too late to make a difference. Keep your fingers crossed that it's not.
