It's far easier for a hacker to write a worm if he has access to ALL the source code that powers the internet. He can exploit, say, Linux boxes that run Apache to spread a worm because he found a flaw in the source code.
Yes sure, the flaw will be patched within days, hours or even minutes, but the damage will be done, albeit limited.
A patch is usually made AFTER the exploit is found, not before. You'd have to have an amazing auditing system in place in order to make 100% secure code. In my opinion, writing 100% secure code is impossible.
Microsoft tries to hide behind closed source hoping that by keeping the code closed nobody can easily detect a flaw and exploit it. The major problem with that philosophy is that the damage will be devastating were the code to be leaked...
Open Source = limited damage Closed Source = ticking timebomb
When you create an object in Java, you are, in a sense, creating a pointer. As a matter of fact it's easy to make a linked list or a binary tree with Java, the same way you do in C. Just because it's not explicitly called a pointer doesn't mean it isn't used.
I once saw an ad (during the dot bomb era) when a company was trying to hire Unix sysadmins, and it had a very very long command with echos and pipes and if you could decipher it then you could read who you could contact for a job interview. Pretty clever I thought...
STEP 1: Take off your shoe. STEP 2: After waking up, grab your mobile phone. STEP 3: Stick your mobile phone in your shoe. STEP 4: Use voice recognition to dial and talk.
He's getting old. I find that the older I get, the slower my reflexes are and the less I am able to learn to play an action game. I doubt I'd be able to pick up Super Mario Bros the way I did about 15 years ago...
I believe you can open the.rtf with Word and then you can use a wizard to create a table of contents and an index.
Does openoffice have functions like that? Are there any open source auto-indexers out there? It would be cool to be able to feed those.rtf in an app and generate indexes, etc...
I don't know much, but storing meta-data in files in which you have free reign over what you can put in them cannot be good. Firstly a lot of files are going to be full of garbage. I could theoretically copy-paste a ascii dump of Lord of the Rings into a meta tag. Imagine having to search a directory - oh sorry files-as-directories - in my filestructure for a specific tag.
Furthermore I can see people putting.mp3's online with nothing but SPAM in them. You've basically found a new way for lowlifes to make a living.
I totally agree with the article. How many times have we seen technically superior technology being totally ignored and people going for 'popular' technology. Remember, the PC itself wasn't a technically superior machine. The intel processors weren't the best at the time, but everybody started buying PC's because they all wanted to play Leasure Suit Larry on it (.. and use Wordperfect).
So Debian should be more of a VHS than a Betamax if it wants to stand a chance...
You mustn't forget that the reason why Microsoft systems get hacked so much is because hackers go for Microsoft systems first. Microsoft dominates the market and the hackers want to affect as many systems as they can and embarass the Big Mighty Microsoft - all for pure ego reasons.
I think if - say - Linux dominated the world, then we'll see many more worms/virsuses written for the Linux platform. Let's not forget it's open source, so it should make writing viruses and worms a hell of a lot easier.
20,000 volts??? 20,000 volts??? wtf?? that's impossible!! that's a HUGE amount... I'm sorry, but this cannot be correct... TWENTY THOUSAND VOLTS!! Please, my high-school physics has long faded away, but I don't think 20,000 volts is attainable and if it was, you'd be fried in your chair.
I've been using Delphi for over 2 years now and I can say that Delphi is on par with C++. In Delphi you're not limited to the handful of functions that VB gives you and you can choose to go deeper if you want to, straight down to the assembly level. Everybody here on/. knocks Delphi down as another "Quick 'n dirty" development environment but it most certainly isn't. Yuioup
A colleague of mone OWNS a Tablet PC.... that certainly does not look like the one he has. I can see it right now if I look across the desk... I'm sure he'd agree that that review has got nothing to do with Tablet PC's
We're avoiding Linux like the plague. Why? Do you have any idea how hard it is to find Linux sysadmins? And if you do find them, do you have any idea the sort of salary they're likely to ask?
In my opinion in the long run, the TCO of Linux fall higher than Microsoft. But this is just my opinion. I have no hard numbers and no, I'm not a Microsoft plant.
Okay, here's my take on the situation:
It's far easier for a hacker to write a worm if he has access to ALL the source code that powers the internet. He can exploit, say, Linux boxes that run Apache to spread a worm because he found a flaw in the source code.

That's not true!!

Ever heard of a NullPointerException?
"Java doesn't have pointers" is a hype phrase still left over from the Dot Bomb era...

I dont't get it. What the heck!
I try to start the game and I get this error message:
"Your PC doesn't have enough free space to start a new game. 'L-Mouse' to return to the main menu or 'Esc' to exit Deus Ex: Invisible War.
What, 512 megs of ram and 4,1 GB of hard disk space not enough for you???
What IS going on??? Have I been waiting ages for this????????????
What the heck!

This is something you can do at home:
STEP 1: Take off your shoe.
STEP 2: After waking up, grab your mobile phone.
STEP 3: Stick your mobile phone in your shoe.
STEP 4: Use voice recognition to dial and talk.
Revolutionary!

So can Open Source developers do a better job of building secure software? Is this an area in which Open Source software can compete with Microsoft?

I wouldn't be surprised if OpenGL 1.5 is largely based on the work that Carmack has done on DOOM III.
I think it's going to be an absolute mess.

I curious... how do the extra bits per clock cycle supposed to increase performance? I mean the number of instructions per second don't increase...
