Hardcore Linux guru's are respected because they can pull off anything in Linux. Well I say this: it's about time the Hardcore Debian hackers show the world what they can do and create an installer that can put distros like RedHat & Madrake to shame.
TCPA / Palladium is the stupidest idea I've heard in a long time.
What is going to stop anybody from building an Intel clone without the 'Fritz' chip?
What is going to stop anybody from converting secure files to plain old mp3 or ogg?
How long do you think it will take for people to mod the new platform? I believe that Linux already runs on the X-Box...
Sure I understand that the fastest processors in the market, and the latest (probably 64 bit) version of Windows will entice me to switch to the new platform. I probably won't have any choice. But there is always going to be competition. Hell, if nobody builds an alternative to TCPA/Palladium, I will. I know that it'll be worth it because people will choose 'my' platform over Windows because it will allow them to rip movies, music etc.
OS/X will eventually run on a Pentium which is specifically tailor made for Apple in order to keep up with the competition
for stability's sake, they're not going to allow it to run on PC clones, because they're not in the mood to test OS/X on a vast permutation of hardware setups.
So... what advantage does OS/X have over Windows? Windows runs on just about every hardware setup imaginable - it took years for Microsoft to get this far. Same goes for Linux. Thanks to its open source nature, you can run Linux on a lot of hardware combinations. But OS/X can eventually only run on an Apple Pentium which is outdated the moment it comes out. Hmmm.
So that means that the only appeal of OS/X is its GUI?
Mozilla isn't slow. The performance is very much improved since the early versions. (Okay, I'm using an ADSL line, so that could make a difference) but I certainly don't think that Mozilla is slow compared to IE.
If you're talking start-up time, IE is faster because it's embedded in Windows. It gets started up when windows starts up.
Why bother with all the analysis? The movie just sucked. George Lucas writes up anything that comes to his head and passes it on to the production crew with nothing more than "uh.. I want this..."
Episode II is so far below any sort of level that it's beyond any form of analysis whatsoever. The only question we should be asking ourselves is "why the hell did we spend money to see this crap?"
When are they going to come up with an improved download manager? One that can compete with download managers such as Download Accelerator or Getright.
I really don't think Microsoft should have a problem with this. Say people are able to mod the X-box. What will it do? It could potentially raise the sales of the X-box because all of a sudden you have hobbyists turning X-boxes into, say, relatively cheap servers, or install modded versions of their favorite games. Basically it would make the X-box a "cool" machine supported by the "underground", a group of "cool" individuals who mod the machine to death. Microsoft will catch on to this, and the X-Box 2 will be a more moddable machine.
Huh? Banner ads take up a fraction of my bandwidth. I (and probably 99.9999% of the world's population) have no problem with the banner ads. You want money, talk to my ISP. That's where my money goes to and nobody else.
Yeah, that's what I'm wondering as well. How the hell did it work? Who played the chess? Why was he so good? How did they control it from a distance? Was it placed under a table? Did someone twiddle something to operate the hands?
The really annoying thing about this Turk story is that nobody seems to care about how it worked. People will just say, "You're missing the point of the whole story". I DON'T CARE ABOUT THE POINT SOMEBODY TELL ME HOW IT WORKED I MEAN THIS WEBSITE IS READ BY THE MOST INTELLIGENT PEOPLE IN THE WORLD MATHEMATICIANS ENGINEERS GEEKS SOMEBODY PLEEEEEAAASSEEEE!!!
That's not a surprise. They always release the game sources for their latest games, including all the other games based on their engines (Half-Life, Alice...)
The person who posted that newsitem obviously knows nothing about id. I'm surprised his comment made it to the prestigous/. site.
I saw the trailer in the cinema about a week ago. My impression of Episode II is that it's a sort of teen road movie or something. It kinda reminded me of American Grafitti. I think George Lucas is trying to get posters of Episode II hanging on teen girl's bedroom walls. He's just playing the marketing machine again.
What I don't understand about spammers is that they expect you to buy their products after you've been annoyed by them. I never buy any products from advertisers who:
1) spam my mailbox
2) use popups
3) annoy me with flash animations that take up 80% of the webpage I'm trying to read
4) have floating flash animations which seek out your mouse pointer
5) etc..
Is this how /. makes money? By planting fake newspostings that are actually ads?
Yuioup
Oh... oops. My bad.
Yuioup
Erm. I don't know what this guy is trying to do, selling an upgrade to an open sourced game.
He has to release the source code, so...
Yuioup
There is a small textbox top right next to the address bar with a looking glass. If you click the pull down icon, you can select google.
;-)
I think it's an excellent concept

Just my two cents,

I'll probably end up richer that Bill Gates ;-)
Get the point?
If I understand it correctly:

Do'h!
WHY DON'T THEY JUST BREAK OPEN THE SECOND DOOR!!!
Don't tell me it's going to take another year before they decide to drill the second hole.
Why did they take so much time in the first place?
Yuioup

...port Quake3 to a Atari 2600 :-p
Have a look on their website

It's in a pop-up. Turn your "Open Unrequested Windows" on in your Mozilla ;-)

Erm. You forget one minor detail...
..
LINUX IS OPEN SOURCE!!!
There will be people out there who will find ways to get the PS2 to read CD's and play the games in X-Windows.
Just wait
Yuioup
Software is IMPOSSIBLE to secure, just plain IMPOSSIBLE!
So I don't know if Bill's going to be that pissed
