The problem is already pretty bad, and the worst part is that the worst offenders are the Telefon companies. Telefonica is constantly sending me SMS messages saying they will let me send 10 messages for free, or suggesting that I might want to change to a different plan etc. It's even worse when roaming outside of Spain. When in Franc for example, every time I change from one carriers tower to another or go under a tunnel, I get a new SMS saying "welcome to France! If you want to check your voice mail on the road, blah blah blah" That pretty much makes the phone more annoying than useful, since it's beeping with a new SMS all day long.
In France, all the Bank Cards have pins. (of course if you leave france with your french bank card it just works like a normal Visa), So if you are in France with a French card, you just put your card in the machine, and enter your pin. No signature is required. It's a really nice system, and the French seem to use them for just about everything. I'm still in the habit of using mostly cash.
Of course there are downsides to the french system as well. I once entered the wrong PIN 3 times on accident, and I had just purchased train tickets. But they couldn't Print the tickets unless I validated the PIN. My account had already been charged, and they wouldn't give me the tickets. I tried to just by new tickets, but she helpfully explained that the train was full. (of course the train wasn't full because I had already paid for an reserved a seat. This led to a conversation where the crazy french lady said nothing but "Your card is blocked. The Train is full." for like 5 minutes. I still see her in my nightmares taunting me.. "Your Card is blocked. The Train is full" over and over..
Yes, I know what you mean. Someone gave me a Wallet purchased in the States last christmas. The 5 10 & 20 Euro notes are just fine, but the 50's and up stick out the top of the wallet.
I really think they over-did it with the size of the larger notes..
Good points, and good questions. Yes, since, I start at the beginning of the line (both ways), I can ALWAYS get a seat. And yes, it fills up quickly, and through the city centre, it's standing room only, which doesn't bother me because I'm seated.:-) Anyway, These days I can read the newspaper with no problem, and that's what I do each day on they way in. (I also try to just miss the rush hour on the way in, since I have some flexibility.) The laptop takes up even less room than the newspaper.
I would feel completely safe on line 1. It is all open between the cars. There are indeed some lines where I would feel uncomfortable with anything expensive, but Line 1 is really safe.
I wouldn't be too concenered with Corporate espionage really. I would obviously save anything really sensitive for when I arrived at the office, however, it is important to remember that there are always people reading over your shoulder. They aren't necesarily spying.. They are just bored.:-)
So, in conclusion, yes, it's pretty safe, and it would work for me, but on other lines, (2 and 7 for example), I would be much more reluctant to try to do much real work.

Paris, The City Of Wi-Fi?

· Score: 4, Informative
Paris is more wired than any city I know of. The Metro tunnels are packed with fiber, and there is always a Metro station nearby within the city limits. Also, the RER (Regional Trains) are packed with fiber, which extends the reach of Cable companies, and anyone else who wants to be part of the telecom crowd.
Also, just as in the U.S., the long distance rail has loads of fiber running alongside it.
All of this adds up to make france a VERY well connected country. Almost Anything you could possibly need will be found on the internet in France.
Where they really need Wi-Fi is inside the metro tunnels. Surely they could install some leaky coax or seomthing that will make it work for the people actually travelling in the Trains.
I live in Paris (I'm not french, my work sent me here), and I have to travel the full length of Line 1 each day. The trip from Chateau de Vincennes to La Defense each day is 45 minutes to an hour, and if I could make my laptop work for that time, that would cut my workday by nearly the same amount as my travel time. I've been waiting for them to do the same thing with the mobile phones. Right now, the phones work in some tunnels, and not in others.
It's true that all the cables and fiber run through the metro tunnels, that makes it easy to hook up any building with fiber, because nothing is very far from a a Metro station. Both Cable Internet and DSL here in Paris is available everywhere.
CDT received the most spam just by placing an e-mail address at the bottom of a webpage. Spammers "harvest" these addresses with computer programs that collect and process addresses and add them to spam mailing lists. If a user must post his/her e-mail address in a public place, it is useful to disguise the address through simple means such as replacing "example@domain.com" with "example at domain dot com"
Then, at the bottom of the webpage:

hmm.. I'll be interested to know how much spam that generates for him/her....
I read that also, where he mentioned that they were "committing a felony under the United States code" every time they downloaded a song.
Can that be correct? It may be illegal, but is it really a felony? That seems a bit harsh, but then again, there are a lot of things that are felonies in Texas that aren't felonies elswhere.
Of course Unlawful Carrying of a Weapon (Handgun, whatever), is only a mesdemeanor.
Posix.. DEC's version of Unix, whatever it was called, I don't remember. Anyone remember Ultrix, by Sun Microsystems? There are scores of others.. This whole lawsuit is just stupid.. as is SCO. Although, I did enjoy using Xenix for a while.
Ah.. Yes. I rememember a time long ago in a Sun Microsystems class where the instructor said:
"It used to be that less was more powerfull than more, but then they incorporated less features into more, making more just as powerfull as less, more or less"...
bicycles? many people have emailed me and asked "why don't you just use a bicycle?". i agree. if i could i would, i really like bicycles- but for me, they're for exercise and fun, not a commute which isn't very bike commute friendly which mine is. here's why- i go over huge hills in seattle, most cyclists out here walk their bikes up 2 of the hills i need to go over, i would need to do the same _and_ i have a pretty big load to haul (a couple laptops and equipment). i also meet with clients and need to be somewhat dressy, so showing up sweaty and a huffy mess isn't an option. if there were showers and i had the time, i would use a bicycle, but since i don't the segway ht has been a much better option than a car, and since a bike doesn't really make sense for me the ht has fulfilled my travel needs. if you can use a bike to get to work and enjoy it, that's the best solution.

With software that can do long distance meetings, and share files and photos, it would be a great business tool for brainstorming sessions, project planning, etc. It would also be great for distance learning applications and study groups. More and more colleges are doing Internet based classes these days, especially in doctoral programs. Too bad They didn't have those in my day..
Sadly, a google search turns up precious little on the name silverfart, which leads me to beleive I may be misspelling it, but that is how he pronounced it. There was a Blog where someone appears to have invented someone named Aaron Silverfart.
Interestingly, There was a finnish page (in finnish), which contained the word, although it wasnt a proper name.
It says ut. Men i ett huj fick han två varningar. Han låg på fjärde plats men hade silverfart . Den farten.....
I dont read finnish, so my apologies if that says something really horrible..:-)
Many countries have laws to prevent this sort of thing. Im not sure about the U.S., but Germany requires that someone be named with an "appropriate" name, and in the case of dual nationality, they should have a name appropriate in both countries. A recent example was when a Turkish couple wanted to name their child Osama, but that was not allowed.
Previously in Belgium, you had to use a name from an approved list, which means that if you were dual nationality Belgium/Spanish, Miguel would become Michell, or Santiago may become James.. (Im not positive what santiago would become, its just an example)....
but anyway, in many places, I dont think you can actually change your name to: qwrtpsdfghjklñzxcvbnm....
But then Cher has done well.. I should change mine to "Z", just like MIB...
Either that or I don't understand. (It works out the same for me in the end).
I went to register my.name, just for kicks, I entered Z for my First name, and Gringo for my last name, and I was provided with the very helpful message:
Your own, impressive.name addresses
z@gringo.name; and
www.z.gringo.name may be available right now.
Which isn't really what I would want at all, IF I did want a.name. I would want zGringo.name
Their version of "whois" isn't really what I'm used to.. Maybe that's the way it's supposed to work, but then, that also probably what I'm not really interested in a.name.
And, what's up with their response: www.z.gringo.name may be available right now?? Is it available or not? It was a yes or no question..
argh..

Perhaps they are the internet equivalent of the Axis of Evil.
Or they could be the "Coalition of the Willing" who will fight the network owners to maintain a "free" internet.
I guess it just depends...

Right. I had thought as much, which leads me to wonder, why it doesnt work under Windows 2000?
Why limit it to XP? That doesnt make much sense to me either.
