  1. vertical cabling should use firestop on The Problem Of Unused Cabling · · Score: 1

It is estimated that 60 billion feet of cable have been abandoned in the plenum spaces that allow air circulation through a building, creating a fire hazard. Older cable could be particularly toxic in a fire.

Everywhere I have worked in recent years, local code has required the use of firestop at each floor with Vertical cabling. That way, there is no airflow between floors. Also, the plenum coated cabling is fire resistant. I have seen some abandoned cabling, but it's never been that big of a deal.

Yeah, I read that but that just skews the stats even more.. It goes to show that you really have to look for that to find it. It generally doesn't just appear on your screen while you are trying to go about your normal business. In a study using 12 words associated with child pornography, the U.S. General Accounting Office found that 42% of 1,286 files on the peer-to-peer site contained child porn.

    Those figures didn't surprise Gillespie.

What are these idiots on? There are a lot more than 1286 files available via Kazaa, morpheus, etc.. It's not a "site" and there is no way that 42% of it is child porn.. That is absolutely nuts. Most of it is Movies and MP3's There is a fair bit of regular porn as well. If 42% were child porn, that would usurp every single other category.. That stat is just stupid. The sad part is that there are loads of people out there who will believe that nonsense without even bothering to run the numbers..

  7. Entering the search engine market on Google Considering Merger With Microsoft · · Score: 2, Interesting

They've been trying desparately to get into this market for quite some time. It's not actually too surprising that Microsoft would be interested in teaming up with Google. Microsofts attempts at search engines just can't compare with google. If they did team up, I doubt seriously that they would make any sort of effort to convert it to a windows platform or anything.

If they do team up, I sure hope they fix that crap in IE that re-routes me to this:

    "We can't find "doesnotexist.c0m"

You can try again by typing the URL in the address bar above.
    Or, search the Web:

Go to MSN Search to see complete results for "doesnotexist.c0m".

A re-route to google would be far less annoying.

But there is a growing contingent who fear the threat is closer than some in Hollywood want to admit. Already industry analysts suggest there could be as many as 500,000 copies of movies swapped daily.

I worked for IBM Global Services, and quite enjoyed it. This was a few years back, but I found the hours fairly reasonable, there was quite a bit of on-call stuff, but it wasn't too bad.

I was installing and maintaining firewalls. My bigest complaint was the amount of work that served for nothing. (ie 2 days of working on a presentation, and no one shows up to see it), and those were usually to encourage us (IBM) to use our own products rather than purchase from the competition. We had OS/2, which at that time worked well for a few things, and obviously, AIX was free, and it rocked!.

There was quite a bit of beaurocratic nonsense, but as a whole, I enjoyed the experience..

Try using Western Unions website to send money from France to Holland for example. Cant do it. You cant even call them and use the phone service. Its all for U.S. customers only.

There are loads and loads and loads of examples. Even more often its for stupid reasons, like it requires a phone number, and when you enter your phone number it comes back with "Oops youve entered too many digits for your phone number. Please enter your full 10 digit phone number with area code first" The same problem exists with postal codes.

European websites dont have this problem. Its just the American ones. Its quite frustrating, as I am also American, and would often like to order stuff from there. I usually just bring an empty suitcase when I go just so I can bring back what I cant buy over the web.
