Higher level tools might be great for the kids of today, writing social web sites.
The kids of today however don't have a clue about the programs on which this internet is based on. The routers, the switches, the firewalls. Do you thing they are all written in C++ or Java?
If you want a toaster, then by a damn toaster. Linux is there for those of us who want to make the bread ourselves, chop down a tree for firewood, bake the bread in our home made oven and toast the bread in front of a real roaring fire.
Mr toaster is lazy, and cooked his toast in 120 seconds. Mine would have taken a few days, but I bet it tastes better.
This has been the most inspiring collection of responses from any CEO through any media I have ever come across. It will certainly make me think twice about about my database product recommendations next time round.
Thanks for spending the time to listen to us geeks:o)
>I would pay for this app if it was a commerial program!
The source is GPL, so you can buy it as a commercial program. Please feel free to post your credit card details, and I'll sell it to you for the bargain price of $49. I'll even ship you the source code!
>If you don't like a book, and you're not its target audience, then put it down and don't review it.
Actually, for once I'm glad to get a slashdot advert ( sorry, book review ) that is negative. I was getting fed up with blah blah this book is great blah blah followed by a link to buy it at an inflated price at BN.
Hey slashdot, how about a few bad reviews of software books? Or are you afraid to piss off your sponsers?
I just fitted one yesterday. Bloody crap. Hissing, poor frequency response. Why we can't just have a low level 3.5mm jack socket... oh, cause then the garages wouldn't be able to charge £250 for fitting it. Silly me.
>the US has enough land to sustain only about 1/10 of it's population
Maybe they should eat less.
Its the patches site thats going, not pine itself.

C powers this world. You just don't know it.
>C is the source of all these problems. Please stop using it.
Thats like saying guns kill people.
Stupid people are the problem, not the tools.
>Richard Thomas, the information commissioner for Great Britain, says that fears of the nation's 'sleep-walk into a surveillance society'
That is not true. I heard his comments, both last year and this year.
Last year he said
"I think we are sleep-walk into a surveillance society"
this year he said
"We have sleep-walked into a surveillance society"
He never said 'fear'
He wants a debate as to whether or not this is something we want.
Don't put words into his mouth to make your subjects sound interesting.

Are there any of those left in the usa?

He remains innocent until proven guilty by a jury, unless you know better.

>(Article is slashdotted, so I can only react to the submission/summary.)
Dont worry, you didn't miss anything.
>the environmentalists" in an attempt to discredit that opinion
Do yo ulive in a country where being an environmentalist is a bad thing? god help you, I hope it's a small country.
You only need 4 bits for a digit. Thats 50KB
Thats great, thanks!
Oh dear, marked as flamebait. I guess our slashdot overlords can't take criticism.

:o)
That's because, thankfully, you are not a member of the grammar police
Potatoes?
>His antennae can move both forward and backward as well as in and out,
I can see my wife wanting one of these.
You posted as an Anonymous Coward. Thats quite fitting really, in this case. You are just some little minded bigot.
Xinhua have an atrocious track record for truth verses spin, worse than tony blairs pr department. I'm not going to get excited about this one.
>Please, nanny government, please make my decisions for me because I'm a complete and utter retard and can't make them on my own.
Well, the people voted the government in. I guess that just confirms your point.
>Speaking of which, the average publich toilet gets a thorough (? :-)) scrubbing with nasty disinfectants several times a day.
Blimey, where you do live?
If you don't clean the environment you occupy for 1/3rd of your day, then heck, you deserve to get sick.
I agree.
