Call me old-fashioned, but I prefer to keep my data in-house. I know who is accessing it, who even has access to it, who has access to the physical rooms, the racks, etc. Do you think that "cloud" computing is going to increase or decrease security leaks? In a few years, if this keeps going the way we're going, there will be so many leaks we won't even report them anymore.
Yeah, I do networking/security for a living, and I simply cannot trust a third party to be as responsible as I am with my data. I work for a financial firm, there is no way in hell we'd even consider out-sourcing our data or servers to a third party. Way way too much information available there, it would be too tempting, IMO.
With regards to the data center in question, yes, chances are it will be out-sourced. But I wasn't referring to that. I was referring to calling out-sourcing your servers and whatnot to a 3rd party "cloud computing". Cloud computing to me indicates that your information is distributed all over the internet, not a single provider. That's not a "cloud", that's a single entity.
Good God, I can't be the only one so sick of this cloud computing bullshit. Seriously, just because it works for some types of data and/or applications, doesn't mean it'll work for everything.
Put down the fucking hammer, not every IT task is a frigging nail.
I'm guessing that the guy with 3 pairs of sunglasses over his regular glasses must have been a slashdotter. Where else would you find such ingenuity (and such nerdiness)?
Whoever you are, I salute you, my friend.

you're basically consigning generations of people to strict rationing and constant danger for the purpose all to be able to look and see what's going on the next star system over (hint: probably absolutely nothing).
Ah, but what if you're wrong? What if, one star system over, they're having a MASSIVE keg party and people are getting naked in the hot tub?
What if?
(Why yes, my glass *is* half full today. I guess that means I need a smaller glass.

How has microsoft convinced anyone for the past 20 years that security isn't important? If anything, I'd say it HAS convinced people security IS important.
People don't go to the mall and leave their car unlocked*, so why do users think security on a computer is not just as important?
*Yes, there are exceptions, no, you aren't special for being one, but I would enjoy reading your missive on why you don't lock your 1972 Pinto with nothing in it of value.
Also, the key thing for where I work is the ability to bar-code scan (for example) the service tags and vendor codes on our desktop/laptops and have that populate a DB as well..along with everything else.
It's a huge undertaking though, to get everything in order. It's really something that needs to be done right from the start, or when you fork-lift laptops or something. Sucks. I swear you could hire a team of monkeys to do this year round and they'd still be lagging behind after 2 months.
Are you not using DHCP? I ask cause if you aren't....uh...why not?
Here at my company we're looking at a few different things, right now we have it up on an internal wiki page and it sucks...but the process has been back-burnered like 10 times already.
probably the only way he could save his family from being threatened.
Or maybe he was guilty of trying to sell the prototype? We/.ers always seem to assume that people are innocent. Maybe he was guilty as sin and knew they'd eventually find out and didn't want to be around when they did?
the cloud is not taking over everything, not everyone is going to give up their computers for a network appliance that depends on the cloud to do anything and everything, the cloud will at best become useful for a few people but not everyone
We need a car analogy. rich Very well. If you're a homeless man, and you're breaking into cars to get out of the freezing cold of winter (and you really like the feel of rich, Corinthian leather) then if you were faced with either entering a beat-up Pinto or a nice extended-cab 4x4, you'd more than likely take the 4x4, correct? The only reason I can think of that you'd take the Pinto is either you're completely nuts or you got confused and thought you were going to be sleeping inside a giant bean. Which, you know, is pretty understandable.
For the record, you never said we needed an on-topic, on-point car analogy.;-)

what can they use? What's the one thing that never changes? Even Mac addresses can change, just replace the hardware.
It's tough. However, in most cases, unless the ISP does something, the average home user will get the same DHCP IP address for as long as they leave their computer on and it can auto-renew.

And I am the exact opposite. I've been in the IT industry (not coding, but routing/switching/WAN/LAN/Security) since the early 90s. When I go on vacation, I want to get as far a way from anything tech-related as I can.
I already spend enough of my life doing IT/technology related things, why would I want to do more of it on my vacation?
Obviously, to each their own, but I am having a hard time wrapping my head around the need for this book.
you're 100% correct...English Bulldogs are an abomination.
Did you know they can't even reproduce without artificial insemination? How is that considered a good thing? It's horrible. Our neighbors have one, and we dog-sat while they were gone. The poor thing could barely breathe. It was so bad, that when it was sleeping, if you didn't hear this rasping groaning snore coming from it, you'd think it was dying.
Unreal. I feel so badly for the dog. It's a sweet dog too, that's the thing of it. I just wish people would stop breeding them the way they do and let nature take its course.

who are you talking to? Hate to tell you, Mr Preacherman, but the congregation is thataway. We're the choir.
In most companies I've been around or worked for, the number of users far far out-paced the number of switches, servers and routers.
So yes, you are correct, you'd need to track at least 1 IP for each of those devices, and exclude the rest from your DHCP pool(s).
