    Make NO policies. If a child REALLY WANTS to get access to pornography or whatever you forbid him to view on his computer, no amount of policies, CyberNannys, etc is going to prevent him/her from accessing that material from a friends home or a public computer. Preventing access to media just does not work.

    In my case, the oldest hardware my machine is still using are my PS/2 keyboard and mouse. I got them both "2 machines ago", when I bought a P166, 32 mb ram box. I've changed most of the machine twice, but I am still using the same keyboard and mouse as they work fine and I've seen no reason to change them. The 2nd oldest thing in my box has to be a Creative SB128 PCI.

    I am a big fan of OSS, *BSD, Linux, Samba, you name it, but I have to call bulllshit on this one. A 2.5 x speed advantage can only mean one thing: misconfigured Windows machines. In my own experience (running a FreeBSD box with Samba 2.2.8 on a LAN full of Win2000/XP boxes), the Samba speed advantage has been about 30-40%.

    Where are the system specs, charts, graphs, actual numbers ?

    By this same logic, you can be sued for a DMCA vialation if you attempt to playback this CD on a machine running Linux or a *BSD operating system. AFAIK, this DRM system will only work on Windows and MacOS X, so in this case, "Linux" and "BSD" can be seen as "hacker tools" used to counterfeit the DRM system. Therefore, you are breaking DMCA and can be sued. Aren't things just getting better and better ?

    Even if this leak will be distributed in the compiled form, you won't be able to actually use it before the official game release. Unless someone leaks the game media files soon, that is.

    It's the source to the entire game. Game code and engine as well. Some reports say there is actually a TF2 folder as well, indicating that TF2 isn't as dead as we all thought...

    I *REALLY REALLY* hope that Valve will just put it's tail between it's legs and will start accepting patches from outside contributors if it indeed *IS* the real source code to HL2. If someone with enough skills convinved Valve he'd be able to port it to Linux, I'd be in fscking heaven. Unfortunately, that's not likely to happen due to heavy usage of DirectX :(

    This one is no doubt my favourite OpenBSD song so far. BTW, did anyone else find similarities between the "rap part" of the song and some Eminem track (can't remember the name) ? Same rhythm and rhymes sounded the same (different words, obviously). Was that on purpose or just a pure coincidence ?

    You are supposed to find a "tracker" website like suprnova.org, which host torrent files. Once you found a decent tracker, look around it for everything you might be interested in. Then use the BitTorrent client to download it.

    Remember EpicGames? The folks who developed UT and UT2003. Well, you can now be sure we won't be seeing any more Linux titles from them. According to this article, EpicGames and Microsoft have just signed a multi-game publishing deal which would make the games PC/XBOX-exclusive and I really doubt MSFT would permit any kind of Linux support.

    Because you don't need an "exploit" to "hack" Telnet. Telnet is not encrypted at all, all your passwords are sent in plain text so anyone can sniff your packets and get your logins.

    I've only recently (a few weeks ago) got into DVD-ripping under *NIX (using FreeBSD) and I found mencoder to be the most intuitive cli tool to use. Just thinking about trying to remember all cli switches to transcode makes my head hurt.

    Mencoder with libavcodec/ffmpeg provide good quality video encoding at decent speed. I am using the following -lavcopts to archieve the best results:

    "vcodec=mpeg4:vhq:v4mv:trell:precmp=258:cmp=258:su bcmp=258:vmax_b_frames=1"

    Make sure you pick a good video bitrate and rip the audio at good quality. Personally, I suggest 192 kbps CBR MP3 to prevent any kind of compatibility issues.
