Really, the only thing that keeps me from ditching windows for linux is the lack of Lightwave, Adobe Creative Suite, and Macromedia Studio MX. Now, most of those can be replaced with work-alikes, but I'm afraid Lightwave is a deal-breaker.
The only reason I never went Apple (Or more accurately STAYED Apple, as I started on a Mac 512k and a MacXL a hojillion years ago) is because I've grown accustomed to doing my own hardware. I enjoy it, in fact.
And I disagree that a 'streamlined version' wouldn't give the users enough reason to stick with it, because chances are, they already have stuff they want to do in Mac OS, and either have legit copies (For instance, Lightwave is Mac/PC compatible out of the box, dongle and all.) or know where to download what they want to use on Mac OS. (Since we're talking about piracy anyway.)
Mac OS vs Windows becomes a no-brainer when that's all there is to the choice. (i.e. Apple hardware doesn't enter into it)
Apple would be stupid not to realize this, and as Apple ISN'T stupid, I'm sure this is just posturing, and I agree with the conspiracy theorists, we'll see a crack to open up Mac OS x86 to all x86 hardware, and Apple won't do a damned thing about it.
Now, the only question is, will there be retail boxes or will you have to buy an x86 Apple? (If the latter is the case, then they've screwed up, because everyone will just download it.)
As someone used to seeing stuff days before it hits store shelves, and seeing leaks like this within hours on IRC, bittorrent, and Usenet... I have to say that if something THIS BIG hasn't shown up on any of those yet, it has to be fake.
A shame, really. I really wanted to try this. I've been wanting to switch to Mac OS for a long time now, but I wanted it to run on MY hardware. Everyone's always telling me to switch to linux, well...I love linux, but none of the applications I use for *gasp* work run under linux. They do however all run under Mac OS:)
As long as you have to buy wonky third-party hardware to play console FPS games with a keyboard and mouse (Read: The proper interface), uhm no. But then, I'm kinda spoiled when it comes to console game control interfaces, I own Tekki. http://media.giantpachinkomachineofdoom.com/images/blog/2005-06/controller.png Between that and my DLP (circa a year after that was taken) the heavens have actively started trying to smite me for idolatry.;P
Here in Middlebury Vermont there's a program that 'recycles' old computers given to them into usable computers for low-income households. Back when I was doing volunteer work for them, like 4 years ago, they were trying to use some godaweful dos-based OS/thing/. New Deal or something like that. They were looking into using Linux, but no one had come up with an idiot-proof enough distro yet.
They would charge $5 for each computer, and $5 for each monitor brought in by individiuals, iirc. (as a blanket 'disposal fee' incase they had to trash it) But most of the hardware they got in came from the local college and the like. There'd be pallets and pallets of equipment... Very few non-brandname systems.
Personally, I've never parted with ANY of my computers. Except an old frankenstein jobber I made out of a Packard Bell Pentium 75 system, which I traded for a nice little black and white CCD unit.
Is 'disposing of hardware' really a geek concern? Besides the occasional fragged part, what do we really toss out? Everyone I know holds onto their old pieces-parts 'cause they never know when the stuff'll come in handy. But then, maybe it's just that none of us have significant others to tell us to chuck the crap;P
So what if my room is starting to resemble Lain's? When I complete my Microchannel Architecture-based giant robot, we'll see who gets the last laugh!!
I've seen, at the very least, fifteen different copies on usenet. Bittorrent is a convenient target. Nothing more.
Bittorrent is a somewhat 'noobish' way to steal stuff. Bittorrent just makes a convenient target because the MPAA can figure out WHO is downloading....and have them all arrested for not wanting to pay $8 to see a movie that sucks.
Bittorrent is a tremendous tool, and I plan to use it in the future to distribute my own works from my website. The MPAA gestapo can beat THAT with a stick.
Okay, the arguments about whether or not the US owns space aside, they're just talking about ads in space we can see from Earth, right? I'm curious because, like in Cowboy Bebop, I envisioned holographic space billboards and stuff around the approach paths for space colonies and whatnot in one of the projects I'm working on.:P
It's really weird hearing them actually think about this kind of stuff...
You don't get that kind of experience from a computer.
No, but I do from my DLP projector and new 7.1 surround system. The theater next door has nothing on me.
Though I do agree, any downloadable version is going to be crap...until someone does a telecine of it and rips the theater DTS disc. (I'm betting on a week.)
And guess what? It could be DVD quality with 7.1 DTS ES or whatever, and you'd STILL have to pay me to watch it.
I may be a bit slow at times, but I'm not THAT learning impaired. I learned my lesson halfway through Episode 1. (Though I still went to a midnight screening of Episode 2 for reasons passing understanding.)
I could probably enjoy it if I turned off my brain (Thus silencing the screams of my childhood memories being brutally slaughtered one by one.), but I don't know how to do that.
I don't arbitrarily hate Star Wars. You're talking to someone who built some authentic lightsaber props that are now on his desk.
I just hate the prequels. Nothing can redeem them for me at this point, not even a 15-minute segment of Jar-Jar getting drawn and quartered, as appealing as that concept may be.
... As much of a free-karma fest as this is, I can't think of anything to say that will in any way top the level of humor already inherent in such an announcement. I'm just not that funny.
While I'm certainly kidding about mobile suits, and by 'certainly kidding' I mean 'grudgingly aware of the difference between actual reality and my reality', maybe this kind of talk will jumpstart the sort of space program we should have had two decades ago... Like the old IBM commercial from awhile back with "Where are my flying cars? I want my flying cars!" I say 'Where are my space colonies? I want my space colonies!'
While analysts feel this move will be unwelcome in the international community, military officials believe that "Space superiority... is our destiny,... our vision for the future."
Screw it. Let's develop Mobile Suits and just conquer/destroy everyone who doesn't like it!;D
If I have the right to digitally record TV shows, why doesn't someone ELSE have the right to record them FOR me?
I mean, are we afraid that (omgbbq!) people who don't have this 'right' are getting ahold of the files? And who ARE these people that don't have these rights? Is this like making encryption software available to terrorists or something? Is there a 'no-export' list for TV shows now? Have we all been unknowingly making episodes of Friends available to Al Quaida?
This keeps getting more and more ridiculous. It really does. Why even bother having television media in this country if we're apparently not allowed to watch it?
On another trailer-related note, the Quicktime trailer site has Serenity and Batman Begins trailers in 1920x1080. (AKA 1080 HDTV...they say 1080 PROGRESSIVE though, never heard of 1080p, only ever seen 1080i) unfortunately, even windows users can't play them for the time being because QT7 is only out for MacOS right now.
Luckily, I found a 720p copy in xvid on Usenet to keep me occupied until then. Go me! (If anyone's wondering, it's on alt.binaries.multimedia and was posted like half a day ago)
I don't think a company (Tiger Direct) that is well-known for luring customers with rebates and deals that will oft-times never be fulfilled has any place on the plaintiff's side of a courtroom. I don't know what they think they're going to accomplish with this anyway...advertising? I mean, what the hell?
Exactly what percentage of piracy takes place on p2p networks anymore? That's the domain of 12 year olds and grandmothers. If these people knew anything, they'd be going after usenet, but that'll never happen. They'd have an easier time going "All this pirateseness is on teh intarweb, so uhh...let's turn it off!"
It's worth noting that a 64-bit version of LightWave 3D was also announced. And I haven't seen the video, but I've been told that it was even mentioned by Gates... (Now I need another shower.) So, now I have a real excuse to go 64-bit. As the charts and graphs on benchmarks say: Render time (Less is better)
Personally, I hope they DO go ahead with this. I don't have a 'tv' anymore, I have a DLP projector, and even for the year or so before I got said DLP and handed down my old TV to my sister, I didn't have cable. The only thing I really miss is all the old episodes of Law and Order on TNT, like 3-5 episodes a night. Everything else I can download off usenet within 12 hours of it airing. Usually in HDTV 1080i if it's from the big four networks. I was just considering getting an HDTV tuner and antenna to hook up to my DLP...
Why's everyone whining about DRM and all that? If HDTV signals are DRM'd, why does every show in HD end up on usenet within hours, in it's native mpeg-ts format? Am I missing something? Is that only to come AFTER the switch?
Yes, I hate prohibited user operations. My DVD player can disable macrovision, play any region, and even play all sorts of computer video files. But it can't let me skip the goddamned FBI warning, which is annoying when it's in like 5 languages on your DVD.
But really, it's one thing to not be able to skip that, but you can't do ANYTHING when that's playing. A couple days ago, I put in the wrong Firefly DVD, and had to WAIT before it'd let me stop the player. WTF?! It's almost enough to make me condone piracy. Atleast the pirates strip the PUO's from the damned disc images!
I agree whole-heartedly with this.

As someone who works in computer animation, let me just say this: HELL YES WE DO!

...it's not April 1st... Did someone at Hexus make a bet or something about a slashdotting?
...the people running those fraudulent sites will end up getting the hackers thrown in prison for terrorism or something.
Well, this is unsurprising. The Pentagon has a much better argument for their need of computers. ;)
Pentagon: We need computers to protect the country from nuclear-#$%&ing-missiles. kthx!
Homeland Security: We need computers so we know what you're doing every second of every day.
Bullshit.

Really, to believe that this thing was ever going to exist, you'd have to be an imbecile or something.
There's obvious, and then there's obvious, and then there's THIS.

Holy hell, you broke AOL.

That and, as a computer animator, I can see this being very useful various CG fields.
I'll tell ya, if I got charged an extra $260 for an mp3 player as a 'piracy tax'...guess what? I'm pirating all my goddamn music. GOOD JOB!
