  1. Oh noes! on Ubisoft CEO Speaks out Against EA Move · · Score: 0, Troll

The French government versus Electronic Arts? I give them three days before the white flags come out. :)

  2. My (Somewhat more than) two yen. on TV Piracy is Next · · Score: 1

I don't have television service anymore, I just download the weekly episodes of all the shows I watch...usually in HDTV (Some even in 1080i*drool*), which I wouldn't have gotten even WITH my cable service, and I STILL don't buy any of the shit in the commercials that would have otherwise accompanied the shows. Boo-fragging-hoo.

I don't really see the point of crying about people downloading shows that are on BROADCAST TELEVISION. (Or people removing commercials, as I'm betting the two issues very closely related in the minds of the TV execs) Cable, okay...maybe...premium...yeah, I understand that... But BROADCAST? And no, they aren't going to lose DVD sales. The people who would keep vidcaps in lieu of official DVDs when they come out, probably wouldn't have bought the DVDs in the first place. They're merely upgrading from the use of a hojillion VHS tapes.

One of my major addictions is West Wing... I've actually made custom season 5 DVDs from high-quality SVCDs I got off usenet, so I can watch them along with all my retail WW DVDs... And you can bet your ass I'll STILL buy the retails when they come out.

(I will however concede that of all the shows I watch, West Wing has the lowest-priced boxsets at around $30-40 a season, CSI gets excessive at $60-70)

This habit of mine (Downloading shows instead of watching TV) evolved from my downloading raw vidcaps of the latest anime, every week. With so little on US television that interests me, it's a no-brainer. (And btw, despite my strong feelings concerning dubs and poor translations, I STILL buy my US-licensed anime DVDs too. Feel free to cite me whenever you need to debunk someone's BS piracy argument. ;P)

Anyway, my point is... What exactly are they afraid of? Loss of DVD sales? Hardly. Anyone who's a fan of the show will buy the DVDs just for the extras, if nothing else. Lost commercial revenue? That's FAR more likely.

Maybe if they made commercials that didn't make me want to destroy all life on the planet, that'd almost be a valid argument... As it is I have half a dozen remotes that have b0rked mute buttons (Actually wore the traces and pads right off the board!), from having to mute every commercial break to avoid being aurally assaulted by braindead shit aimed at the lowest common denominator. (Usually at much higher volumes than what you're watching)

Gee, think maybe THAT'S why people remove commercials? Because they suck? Because they're annoying? You mean there's not some deep, dark, criminal motive behind it? OH-FSCKING-NOES MR. TV EXEC! YOUR WORLD IS ENDING!!

I OWN THE FIREFLY BOX SET, AND ALL TV COMPANY EXECS CAN BURN IN HELL!

(You'll have to excuse that last part, the caffeine is kicking in.)

Last year I bought a LiteON LVD-2002 DVD player, it plays DVDs, SVCDs, VCDs, as well as AVI's (XviD/DivX), MP3s, mpeg1 files, and even jpeg slideshows off either CDs or DVDs. It even has progressive scan and component video outputs... Only set me back $120.

It'd be nice to have some of the features of this machine though, like WMV9 playback, and network access... But I'm already planning to build a MythTV box to serve a DLP projector-based Home Theater system, so it's all good. ^_^

  4. This should work! on Photo ID Required To Buy/Rent Games In Canada · · Score: 2, Interesting

This should keep those kids from buying their violent video games!

Hell, I'm 23 and -I- don't even have a picture ID. And what is this going to solve, anyway? You think some kid who wants to buy the new GTA is going to go "Aww shucks! I can't buy violent video games anymore! I guess I'll go play stickball with my friends..."? Right. <sarcasm>Because we all know his parents didn't buy him a DVD burner last xmas...and there's no way he has usenet access.....</sarcasm>

What kid is going to be all broken up about not being able to spend money on something they're now forced to get for free?

I nominate this idiotic initiative as the scapegoat, for when all the game companies come looking for the money lost to the steep increase in piracy.

People would rather force kids to STEAL video games, than to trust that they know right from wrong on their own? Granted, some don't. Some adults don't either. Crazy is crazy, and stupid is stupid, no matter what age you are.

Hell, most anime these days contain insane amounts of CG (Most of which, contrary to the popular response of "Pfft....cg" YOU CAN NOT TELL IS CG.) I mean...damn. Like many others reading this thread, I too find it hard to see how this could possibly hurt the game in any way (I can tell you, it ensured that I'LL be in line for a copy, or two.), I can understand your being upset with those who leaked it, but people have been waiting for something, anything, substantial about this game. Unless you were AT E3, about the best you could do was that ATI promo vid for the radeon 9700, and it only had a few seconds of footage. Unfortunately, 'something substantial' came from someone else before it came officially from id.

I must say however, even in it's earliest stages of development this is the coolest (Not to mention graphically amazing) thing I've ever seen, and it's going to blow away every other game out there come release day.

Keep up the good work, and try not to dwell on this little incident too much. Hell, it's not like many of us even have systems that CAN play it. ;)
