Actually, Shirow is very involved in 'Koukaku Kidoutai: Stand Alone Complex' which is by FAR the best animated Ghost in The Shell ever, despite not being based directly on the manga. (Animated with the help of Lightwave, no less ^-^) If we're lucky the same team might actually do a satisfactory job of a COMPLETE anime version of the manga.
Oh, and that Shirow mouse, (The black version) kicks ass. *Saves up his pennies...*
I've been hearing alot of stuff like this from people I know all over the place....
Luckily Adelphia doesn't require that you install/anything/, atleast not in this region. All I gotta do is set the internet-side nic in my machine to use dhcp and *Ta-daa!* done. Now if only they'd take my upstream cap off...:P
And what about making commercials that mislead people into thinking that sites like Ebay and WebMD are services of AOL? I can't wait for the Version 8.0 commercials, when they claim to have invented the internet.
I'd have to say that the floppy disc is pretty much dead... It's easier and cheaper now to burn a CD... Besides, when was the last time you had information you wanted to make portable that would FIT on a floppy?
Hell, my latest computer (an athy xp 1800 that I built about 6 months ago), doesn't even HAVE a floppy drive... I bought one to put in it, but never bothered. I also know for a FACT that I actually OWN floppy discs, but I can't for the life of me find one. *Shrugs* Oh well... I'm better off with my Sony 24x cdrw anyway:)) *Pets large box full of 24x cdr spindles*
Boy would I like to buy some render time on THAT O_O
(The article has some nice graphics too!)
And because I KNOW there's probably 2000 "A beowulf cluster of those..." posts that are below my threshold: I would fear for the safety of mankind if someone made a cluster of/those/.
Okay, I know the story was about the EFF's cute little game, but after watching that BSA thing, I have something I need to say about them, and [graphics] software in general.
First off, */sarcasm* you have no idea how many software packages I've paid for with money I picked up while on a quest, inside my computer, to destroy an evil virus. */sarcasm*;)
Now, seriously. Why is every useful piece of graphics software like $500 and up? Your average private individual who may want such software, because of an interest in a particular profession, isn't likely to be able to afford it.
For instance, for the budding computer animator. There are only two real choices, Newtek's Lightwave 3D, and Alias|Wavefront's Maya (I don't much like the software personally, but it too is worth a mention because they do TWO things right).
Both companies just drastically lowered the prices on the packages, making them MUCH more accessible (They're still really expensive, but when you think about how much an animator can make WITH it, you can understand).
Why aren't more companies doing that? I mean, only professionals can afford the software (And they WILL buy EVERY version, WHEN it comes out), but to become a professional, you have to know the software, and probably have already done some work with it.
I think more companies should do things like release learning editions of their software (Like A|W), so that people who can't afford the software can atleast gain valuable experience that could help them get somewhere in their chosen profession (Which would in turn mean they could probably afford the software!), the other option is to lower the prices drastically. (which I can't really see any of the other companies doing...)
Now, to handle as many of the obvious replies as I could think of...
Q. You keep talking about experience, why not go to school for it?
A. Uhm, we're talking about not being able to afford software, so you suggest some kind of higher education? And what if the person is say, still in high school?
Q. What about academic versions of software?
A. Oh/god/ did I think of that! I mean, come on! When Lightwave was still $2500, you could get an academic copy for $900... Unfortunately, I don't even know anyone who is IN school.
Q. Get a job hippie!!
A. Okay, that's not EVEN a question. And, I have one. Also, I am not a hippie.
Q. Well, if you have a job, why aren't you saving up to buy your software?
A. I do, I have, I will probably continue to do so until my demise. Thankfully, I was not speaking for myself (not anymore anyway). I was speaking, once again, in general. Some of the greatest minds of our generation are flipping burgers in some McHell(TM) somewhere (or working some equally crappy job). Do you really see someone in such a job (or two, for that matter) being able to save up for such software (realistically. I don't mean over the course of several millenia)? Oh darn. And that one was the next George Lucas...
In closing: I'm actually lucky enough to have managed (Through several arcane rituals, human sacrifices, and a connection), to get a job that allows me to afford my software, (even Lightwave! Although it took saving for a couple versions AND the price drop), but most aren't as fortunate (ESPECIALLY aspiring artists!).
If companies such as Adobe (And Newtek still, despite their already incredible price drops.) lowered their prices to something more affordable to the average up-and-coming, their userbase would be that much bigger, because those same people who would otherwise either pirate the software, or simply be screwed, are now part of the userbase!
Of all the things in the world, I think human creativity is one of the most valuable. It would be nice if the companies that supply this generation's paintbrushes felt the same way.
I've never seen anything modded 'insane rantings' before... Let's see if I can make/. history.
This ofcourse is all my subjective opinion, and it probably has little-to-no basis in what the rest of you like to call 'reality'.
You just couldn't leave it alone could you? Their FTP server was already screwed, and now they get mentioned on/. again?? I STILL DON'T HAVE THE CLIENT!! (Oh yay,.3 - 1.8kb/s... And I'm on cable...) T_T
...you EXPECT that kind of thing in CA, we had a 5.2 here in the NY/VT area (I'm in VT) back in April. Now ofcourse I had no goddamn idea what it was, I thought it was a bomb or something! I mean, you don't exactly put 'Vermont' and 'Earthquake' together in your head, now do you?
It's not a new idea, but it IS a good one. Not sure what I was watching, but they showed video from a camera inside that caught the bust, it was classic! ^^ A bunch of teenagers pile in, ready for a joyride, they get going and then, confusion.... The car stops working, and glides to a halt as police officers surround the vehicle (Meanwhile the stupid kids are freaking out, and trying to bust out the windows (Did they mention it also LOCKS ALL THE DOORS when they hit the killswitch? ^^ )
And if you want to cry entrapment:
A) I'm pretty sure it isn't.
B) Keep complaining about things that actually CATCH people, and sooner or later, someone's gonna drive off in YOUR car!
How many more of these before the gov't decides to re-design the US patent system? I mean, this is SO incredibly funny, but at the same time, it's quite disturbing...
As someone that spends 90% of my waking hours at my machine, working hard (read: hardly working), and exceed my ISP's stated (Yet, unenforced) bandwidth-per-month limit of 2.5gb by the 2nd of the month (Downloading 'legal', i.e. 'unlicensed' fansubbed anime via IRC. Hey, I gotta watch/something/ while I'm rendering!:P ), this scares the living sh*t out of me.
I give my ISP a good 2-3 months (weeks?) before they try and do the same...
And I thought I had trouble paying before. And they're the ONLY show in town too... T_T
As it's been said, this little trick of theirs doesn't EVEN stop copying. So the whole thing is even MORE absurd. What the hell is Sony thinking? And if you think the prices are ever coming down... HA! Hahaha!! I bet they claim that piracy is at an all-time high and DOUBLE the prices soon...
Ofcourse, just because I think that what Sony is doing is stupid, don't think I actually care: My entire music collection consists of import anime/jpop CDs ^_^
I swore for a year or two that my little 15" monitor was making me go blind, so I saved up and went monitor shopping and just got the biggest SOB in my price range. I probably could have gone a little bigger, but monitor quality was also a concern, I ended up with Viewsonic E90 19" monitor that I bought from techonweb for $202 Not bad, text is entirely readable @ 1600x1200 and at that res I have enourmous workspaces in Photoshop and Lightwave ^___^ I should still probably look into glasses, but at about the same price I'd rather have the monitor:P
Did anyone else read 'webheads' as 'warheads' and start to worry? ;)
/so/ need to get my eyes checked -_-

First, it's an optical mouse, second it just LOOKS really damn cool, and third the Shirow ones look atleast somewhat ergonomic.
*Drools on the picture of the black Shirow one...*

And what about making commercials that mislead people into thinking that sites like Ebay and WebMD are services of AOL? I can't wait for the Version 8.0 commercials, when they claim to have invented the internet.
What? The computers with 2k installed were too secure for them to gain access to and search for pirated material and P2P software?
Yeah. It was just me. (though the composition of the commercial helped) That was a cool show. :D (So was John Doe, btw.)
So far, from the commercials this almost looks like a live-action attempt at Outlaw Star. But then, it IS probably just me....
