  1. Re:The poor on Mars on Manned Mars Mission Some Way Off · · Score: 2

How about we send some NYC bums who were displaced from their sleeping quarters in the WTC parking garage then. All we need to do is send them enough alcohol to last the trip and some steel garbage cans and Sterno to keep them warm on the trip over and on the cold surface of Mars. And best yet, if the alcohol runs out, the Sterno can be used as backup and will kill any of those pesky exterrestrial viruses they may run across.

  2. Re:Only way for musicians to make money on Music Industry Seeks Payola Inquiry · · Score: 2

The problem isn't how much it costs to make a CD, but almost all the profit from CD sales goes to the LABEL and the RIAA, NOT the artist. Some of the artists may be greedy but most of them just want to make music and entertain and have fun. We should not blame them for the RIAA. But we can blame them for sticking with the RIAA when it is not in their best interest to do so.

  4. Only way for musicians to make money on Music Industry Seeks Payola Inquiry · · Score: 2

Because CD sales hardly give them a dime anymore. If they would break off from RIAA run labels and sell their music online in MP3 format (.50 cents/song) they would make a lot more money and maybe could ease off concert prices a bit.

I can't believe this got modded up. This is NOT about entertainment! This is about getting us out among the stars. It will happen if we work towards it. So tell me, what would you rather see? Money spent on useless crap and filling the pockets of corrupt politicians or spent on exploring space, something which has produced many new technologies in the past. Both Apollo and the Space Shuttle programs have given us amazing things we would not have otherwise. Pork projects have done nothing but enrich people like Sen. Hollings.

They are also planning on having their own seperate space station. Their launch and ground control facilities are very impressive, as are their space craft and their long march rockets.

I've noticed this for a long time now. A lot of ISP's are doing that. I don't mind too much since my organization is "Crime" but it is a bit annoying yes. However if you want much better news service at not too much a year, try Newsguy. I used them back when I did a lot of usenet posting and for like $25/year (its gone up a bit since then) I was able to get non-binary access to all my favorite newsgroups. If you want access to binaries you have to pay a bit more, but the service is very customizable to fit your needs. They filtered out 95% of the spam and kept articles for a month, while roadrunner is lucky to keep them a week and seems to have cut corners on spam filtering. So I'd suggest if you are serious about usenet, buy your access (its less then $5/month for basic access) and get higher quality news feed with less spam and full control over those important headers.

This sounds a bit like how the caps worked to control the humans, it made them want to be slaves to the invading aliens.

I wouldn't be surprised to see some rouge government in the future attempt to make soldiers this way, they go to fight and have an electronically induced high which pumps them up and makes them feel invincible. It's a scary thought and one that may not be that far off.

It's definately weird to see so much of what was science fiction not long ago coming true in my lifetime. Granted my grandparents and even my parents saw the same thing, but it's just a pity that it more often than not is the bad things coming true for my generation. 22. Netscape running in X-Windows on Apple's Response to Microsoft: Unix Ads? · · Score: 2

If you look closely you will notice that the netscape icon is the one you see under X-Windows and the Unix versions. Most likely it is running on another unix machine and being remote displayed to the Mac which is running XFree86 (note the red icon next to the Netscape icon). My guess is they were trying to show that you can also remote display apps from your current unix machines to the Mac. Given that you can run X-Windows in rootless mode right alongside Aqua, this is a major plus and something they should have focused more on the ad rather than leaving all users to figure it out by noting the Netscape icon next to the XFree86 icon.

No, we can easily liberate the Oxygen from Hydrogen again using solar power. By the time this would even possibly become a problem (if it is even possible, something else in nature may already counterbalance it) we should have efficient enough solar arrays/orbital stations to maybe even do away with the need for in ground hydrogen. That or we could at least use that to break them back apart, replenishing oxygen in the air as well as bolstering the supply of ground pumped hydrogen.
