Both of them stole Jobs thunder, I wonder if they will join the MacWorld blacklist now?

Then again, if Jobs doesn't throw a wobbler and Apple did let them post this early, then that can only mean that Jobs is still sitting on something else that is very significant.

No there isn't but, really, this is a fools dream. People won't like this, people will complain about this, despite the fact its hardware based, people will find ways to break it or otherwise copy the protected data and release it in unprotected formats. This will cost a lot of money to Intel and other companies and eventually they will see that its a misrible failure and stop including it in their chips and use the space to add more transistors or features that consumers REALLY want.

  7. How to take a stand and have it count on Microsoft Media Player "Security Patch" Changes EULA Big Time · · Score: 5, Interesting

We can go through the courts but there is no guarantee you will win. In fact, if anything, you may do the opposite, set a precident that EULA's are legally binding.

So instead, you will just have to stop using Microsoft software. People bitch and moan and gripe but at the end of the day they sit down and load up Windows.

Well, if you really want an effective protest, you are going to have to change. There are some options and they are not as bad as they seem once you adjust!

    First off, there is Linux.
Pros: Keep old hardware, plenty of free software available, WINE may let you play some Windows only games, large community of geeks who will likely help you for free if you get into trouble (a million places to go for "support"). EULA, if any, is not the work of the devil.
Cons: Limited number of games, some only available through WINE, need to learn UNIX (big curve for some people), some hardware may not work right or at all, ease of use is not all there yet. No office but there are alternatives which are getting better by the month.

    There is also the Macintosh:
Pros: Extremely easy to use, rock solid OS which matches or exceeds the windows experience when it comes to user interface, cd burning from the desktop and overall user experience. Plug and play far superior to Windows and Linux. Good and rapidly growing supply of games and other software. OS is based on open source software (NetBSD) and Linux/UNIX software can and is being ported over (you can even replace your UI with Gnome or KDE if you wish!). Microsoft office is available as well as the open source alternatives ported to Mac OS X. Large fanatic user base who will often help out other Mac users in distress for free.
Cons: Not as many games/software choices as Windows, though this has improved imensely in the last 4 years. EULA may be the work of the devil, check Steve Job's receding hairline to see if horns are exposed. Mac OS X still a young OS and there will be bumps in the road. Last but not least, you will need a new computer and the hardware is a bit more expensive though this is made up for quality and an average usable lifetime of 4 years compared to 2 for a PC.

So you may have to make some sacrifices and changes, but you can give M$ the finger and still have a usable computing solution in your home or office.

  12. Now the shoe is on the other foot! on Shocked, Shocked at Payola · · Score: 2

So the RIAA complains at how much if costs to get Radio stations to play a song, yet they want to force internet broadcasters to pay THEM to promote their songs?

Before they may have been able to let internet radio provide them with free promotion of a single or even pay them a small tithe to ensure their song got played. Yet instead they attack their last hope against the radio stations and antagonize them. So now even if they stopped trying to push the fees, I doubt any of these stations would be willing to help them out anymore.

The RIAA, by effectively removing themselves from the competition on internet radio, ensure now that non RIAA artists will only be played on the internet now. See my sig for a really cool station which plays only non RIAA music. They are gladly thumbing their noses at the RIAA and the labels they are working with are more than happy to allow them to play for free because they know it promotes their CD sales without them having to go through the RIAA or Clear Channel. That is the future of music. The RIAA dug their own hole here and then made it so deep they can't hope to climb back out of it. I hope they have fun rotting in it.

  13. Re:This is what the RIAA gets for suing Napster... on Moby Says Techie Fans = Fewer Sales · · Score: 2

They can shut down Gnutella and such. All they have to do is have the ISP's (more and more are gobbled up by conglomerates every day) like Time Warner (who is a member of the RIAA IIRC) and such add to their EULA's that you are not allowed to run P2P stuff. Then they add software to detect it and disconnect your service if you do it. You get it back if you sign a form saying you won't do it again. Do it a second time, and you are banned for life from them. With so few ISP's to choose from, unless you go dialup, you will be effectively banned from the net.

The only thing which can stop this are wireless networks springing up in cities, but I wonder how long before someone lobbies to outlaw those.

  15. Re:Well.,.. on Moby Says Techie Fans = Fewer Sales · · Score: 2

It's simple, the artists simply need to stop using the RIAA to run their tours. Unless the RIAA actually controls the concert halls, maybe they can strike a deal with the owners directly. If not, then they can try to work out other places to play their music. Someone somewhere likely owns an empty lot and would be willing to help them run a concert in exchange for money. They could even have fan volunteers help build the stage in exchange for getting to meet the band. There is nothing that the RIAA does now that band's and fans can't do themselves anymore. The sooner more bands realize this and quit whining about piracy, the better.

Well, Hydrogen itself can be explosive, but no more so than gasoline. One thing to think about is that in a crash that involves a tank rupture, the hydrogen goes up and away while Gasoline pools on the ground. In the event of fire, gasoline lays in burning pools and coats things or people. If you can get away from the burning hydrogen tank, which hopefully will only have a gout of flame coming out the hole instead of the tank blowing to bits (not likely, no oxygen in tank to combust it all at once) then you are ok. With gas, you have a lot of burning fuel spreading everywhere. I would think hydrogen would be a lot safer in that respect.

Now if the source is methonol, you have to realize that methonol is very toxic and maybe more so than gasoline and suffers the same problems as gasoline in the event of tank rupture and/or fire.
