  1. Re:Or... on Can REDFLY sell in an EeePC market? · · Score: 5, Informative

I doubt it. If you read this article on Asustek you will find things like, "Since the Eee PC hit store shelves last fall, sales have been strong. Between October and the end of the year, Asustek sold more than 300,000 Eee PCs, and executives say they expect to sell between 3.5 million and 5 million this year."

I've seen a number of them out and about - I don't think they can fail by any sane measurement, as they have already succeeded by most.

  2. well on Can REDFLY sell in an EeePC market? · · Score: 4, Interesting

it costs more than the eee pc and has less funtionality. I'm thinking no. As someone who has a windows mobile phone provided by my employer let me just say that they suck. They are slow, buggy and make for a terrible phone and a nearly as bad pda. How they ever came to be more prevalent than palm - I don't know- the ease of using with exchange maybe? I really don't know because everyone I know who has one (my whole team of 9 people and many others in my department) hates it. The company provides them so we use them, but seriously - they are awful. So spending 500 bucks to get a little bit bigger screen and keyboard doesn't really sound like a great idea to me.

I read it - and you said your main question was "How does this make me more productive?" and my answer stands - "It doesn't". OpenOffice.org is not 'better' than Microsoft Office from a standpoint of pure utility if you find Windows to be an acceptable platform. In fact Microsoft Office has some features and capabilities that OpenOffice.org does not have.

So I'm not sure what you seem upset about. That you couldn't incite some kind of flameage over this?

Me I use OpenOffice.org on Windows and Linux because I have a lot more considerations that are important to me and I value freedom over immediate utility. Your post implies that this is not the case for you. And as I said, should that change - it will be there for you. With no cost to download and install beyond a bit of bandwidth and a very small amount of time, try it out if you are really curious.

Don't switch. If you are happy and have already ponied up for windows and office - have a great time. For those of us running other platforms and unwilling to get on the MS treadmill, this is good news. If for some reason you feel a need to move later, OOo will be there waiting.

  6. Re:Great book, lousy review on The Children of Hurin · · Score: 1

I loved it and hated it. It is a beautiful story - locked in a format that makes the reader work too hard to get the beauty out. If I had not grown up a huge fan of J.R.R. Tolkien I'd have probably not cared for it at all. And I'm getting a few jabs about "Oh noes, it's too hard!" but the truth is I'm not stupid. I'm no genius but I do love good literature and can work through stuff that is not considered lower shelf. Probably one of my favorite books of all time is Anna Karenina. But I enjoy fluff novels on occasion as well.

My wife loves the picture frame and I really like the walkman. It's better than my last nano and cheaper too.

I read a lot and I thought - hey if I'm gonna read, I might as well review. So I set up a blog to store them and submit them to slashdot for fun. I'm not a professional critic, I don't have a literature degree or anything, but it's fun. I have to say I really enjoy the feedback negative and positive.

Much of the Shakespeare that people read was never intended to be read. It is meant to be seen, and I do enjoy that as well.

Let's go with something that fits the bill a little better. On a hot summer day you run a long garden hose out from your yard on the sidewalk turn it on and leave it running. Then you run an ad in the paper telling people that if they mail you five bucks they can use your hose to get a drink. But one day you notice a neighbor has been telling friends about your hose and they start coming by and getting a drink without mailing in the money.
