  2. OS X still in it's infancy on Photoshop for OS X · · Score: 3, Interesting

That photoshop has just been ported to OS X speaks volumes about how much more OS X still has to go (although that it's been released does give OS X credibility and brings it that much closer to where it's going.)

I mean, is it polished? yes. Is it solid? yes. Is it ready for the people? it already has been. But OS X is basically a new OS and some kinks are still getting worked out. A lack of serious apps, like Photoshop, was one of those kinks that needed to be worked out and it's a good thing that it's being worked out now.

    I can't wait for OS Z!

if you answered no, you are promoting vaporware based on reputation -- a reputation that isn't that good, really. do you know anyone out there who has a choice that is still using netscape 6? exactly. so far, IE 6 isn't anything special either, although 5.5 was much better than anything else on the horizon, Opera and Moz are going to give it a good run for it's money. (assuming consumbers ever actually learn about the existence of opera or moz.)

all games these days release buggy as hell, with patches expected within the first few days -- WWII Online, AO, Everquest, every single MMPORG you can think of has released buggy as hell and then been patched...this is now standard operating procedure.

so I don't think they'll actually deliver the goods until well after the game is released. It may actually become a good game after a while, but it won't be "the best ev4r!!1!" for quite a while.

  16. Re:Only a part of the job on AOL vs. Trillian · · Score: 2

the logical extension of your argument ("their servers, their rules") is that internet email shouldn't go through to their internal AOL mail servers. which would kind of suck for AOL users in general. They're using the same brutish tactics that MS did w/ IE -- i really hope that they don't win, like MS did; or that if they do, it's because they've improved their IM client and they /deserve/ to win.

trillian may not pay for the infrastructure, but i don't think they should have to. no one pays for email infrastructure (no matter how many "email-to-be-taxed" spams you get).

I'd recommend that people out there at least /try/ trillian. for a pre-1.0 windows product, trillian is *amazing*: i've never ever had it crash, and it's features kick AOL's ass. (it's also nice not to have a big gaping back-door in your IM program.) if you do keep trillian, try one of the skins, the default skin is uuugly (odigo skins and "cold mettle" are nice but my favorite is "dark bevel")

  17. Re:Only Trillian v0.7x affected? on AOL vs. Trillian · · Score: 2

for me, it's about some features that rock. Buddy aliasing, transparency (win win2k/XP), auto-logging, skins to change the look and feel of the client and multi-IM-client messaging == cool stuff I want. I do find the AIM popup ad annoying, but I can live with it. I wouldn't hate trillian for having one like it, but i do think it's better that they don't have it. I would like a wider variety of skins for trillian, but then note that AIM isn't skinnable at all. If AIM had the features that trillian does, there wouldn't be a need for trillian.

If AOL wants to kill trillian, they should...(wait for it)...make a better client, one just like trillian.

there's things AOL gets right that trillian doesn't, like custom sounds for specific buddies, but over all, trillian is a better client and AOL can go right here for trying to kill a competitor that does the job a lot better than they do.

    Another case of PENGUIN LUST!

  22. Re:Be? on AOL in Negotiations to Buy Red Hat? · · Score: 2

But Be isn't nearly as complete as the various Linux distros. There was that article comparing Be to OSX a while ago, and one of the first things Scott Hacker said in it was Be was missing some pretty important pieces (e.g. a good SOLID browser like konq or mozilla,) which would have taken quite a while for AOL to fund.

the only really good thing about a Be/AOL tie-in is that Be can be started from the desktop, so you don't have to reformat/repartition your harddrive; can you imagine the nightmare of 100 million AOL users calling your tech support and asking "where's my windows pictures? I can't get back in windows!?! why did all my stuff on the harddrive go away? what's this linux thing?"

the only way AOL could reasonably hold linux over the head of microsoft would if they got some kind of linux/AOL client that didn't require a repartition/brand new install. I think they could take on MS if MS shut them out completely, but they'd lose lots of customers to MS if the choice came down to choosing between AOL and MS.

  23. Re:Simple response on Universal Music Prepares for Copy-Protection Complaints · · Score: 2

This is off-topic to your central suggestion of boycotting. Sorry.

I really don't think FZ or Prince should be on that little list, as they are/were both on major labels when they started out (FZ started rereleasing his stuff via Ryko before his death, but he started out making vinyl for Columbia(pretty sure it was columbia) and there's reissues still coming out of Utility Muffin Research Studio/Barking Pumpkin (FZ's studio/label) and Prince just got out of his indentured servitude to Warner Bros. not too long ago and has just recently gone back to releasing on a more regular schedule (ie a new one every few months.)

Ani is the only one on your list who's made it big totally independent -- her own label, her own publishing, her own tours, her own everything. I like her music though I'm not a huge fan of it, but her business sense (which basically consisted of telling major labels who came to her with a contract to sign "FUCK YOU!" and building a rabid fanbase by touring constantly) is really what makes her a lot better than any made-for-consumption pop star (e.g. Britney, NSync, Backstreet Boys, et al) -- although the fact that she writes her own songs and plays at least *an* instrument is a definite bonus.

that makes me think it actually is real is the following:

"We have the best d*mn sales force in the world backed by the best engineers in the world."

Only a marketroid would think that the salesmen are more important than the engineers.

But since we're talking about Microsoft, not only is he justified in thinking this, he's probably correct as well.
