In NAACP v. Alabama, the Court affirmed that the constitutional rights of speech and assembly include a right of private group association. The idea that Americans are free to join private groups was not new in 1958. However, the Court's decision to allow private groups to keep membership information confidential was an important constitutional milestone.
Whether handwritten on lined paper or stored electronically in a computer system, membership data is constitutionally protected from mandatory disclosure.
thinking slightly more long term.. let's say your business goes really well and you decide to hire someone else, someone not in the family. It puts that new person in a very akward position because they have to deal with typical office stress with the added dynamic that everyone else in the company is in the boss' family. not cool.

finally! all these years of running Win ME have paid off! so long suckers!
I could certainly see how some governments could use this type of technology for control. But personally, I think that the US government cares a lot less about you than you think they do.
If this conversation were somehow geocoded and I coulld determine that you lived near me, I could ask you to get together for a beer to discuss your opinion. Since we can't do that I'm forced to think of you as some "crazy slashdot conspiracy theorist" instead of the normal person that you might be.
there are a couple of old companies listed in this posting (Feb 25, 1994)
browsing through the old groups it looks like there were quite a few 'telnet shops' back in the day. And I'm sure BBS's and companies like AOL were doing business online before 94.
I think he'll go far and we'll be hearing more from him in a few years!
I disagree. I think it was just plain luck that made Napster as popular as it was. While Napster may have been the first really popular music-stealing program, it certainly wasn't anything special.
I'm actually glad they got shut down-- it forced P2P companies to create better products.
this isn't the status quo and it's hardly attempting to be a universal law. it's a rule enforced at a university that specified some requirement for a course ('don't share code') in an attempt to improve the education of their students.
Coding simple libraries may seem like grunt work, but that's what CS is sometimes. Writing your own libraries gives you a much better understanding of design issues than you could ever get by simply reading someone else's source. If you don't like it, get an IS degree or go to another school.. don't encourage other people to break rules because you're lazy.
And an entire class of CS students doing their own homework is hardly a 'stupid rule' that 'harms everyone'-- they registered for the class and knew what expect. If this school sent hundreads of CS grads out to the marketplace who had no idea how to write good code that would harm everyone!
how cool will this tech be in 10 years-- you'll be able to augment your everyday reality! imagine how cool it would be if your world looked like the a Jetsons cartoon!
Or hook it up into a walkman and have it superimpose visuals based on the mood/tempo of whatever you're listening to..
I some cases those signs are on private property for liability reasons, in other cases they're directed at punk kids that do nothing but tear up public property by grinding on it. (holy crap. I'm old and I sound like my dad..)
Segways on the other hand aren't really a recreational toy. They're vehicles for commuters to get from A to B without cars or public transportation. It's a win/win for cities, they will (theoretically) lower traffic and make commuters happier.
I'm an out of work developer and thought I could pick up some helpdesk work to make some beer money. I saw this posting on monster:
Looking for Help Desk Technicians that speak German. Preferably with A+, MCP,
and MCSE. Third shift position.
Skills Required: A+ Certified, MCP, MCSE, Help Desk
WTF? I gotta be a German-speaking MCSE just to get a 3rd shift helpdesk job?! ridiculous.
You may hate Bill and the.Net strategy, but at least MS recognized that software development paradigms would change, and they shifted their development tools to support that paradigm. (Whether they followed or created the paradigm might be another discussion)
Will AOL/TW Linux have he same insight and strategies? or are they just playing defense?
What if they do take a market share? There's no strategy. That's my big concern with the OSS movement in general-- there's just no direction. It's great that there are all these open source projects, but there's no 'bigger picture' that guides everything..
I couldn't disagree with you more. "...we need a system that is more affordable and fits in with our lifestyle."
Have you been to a major city EVER? The American dream is to have a big car and drive fast, but it just doesn't scale. That lifestyle has to change. And yes, we do need to kid ourselves with 'space-age transportation pipe dreams', because the longer we wait the harder it will be to integrate those systems with our cities.
You wanna retrofit your car so it plays nicely with other retrofitted cars? Have fun watching people with out of state plates zip by you every chance they get. And have fun convincing Joe-sixpack from BFE that he has to install one on his banged-up Chevy because he drives into town once a month.
Everyday I get snailmail spam. It's become so ubiquitous that I don't even complain anymore. But really it's worse than SPAM. It least you can just delete unsolicited email.. with unsolicited postal mail they waste paper. Why don't governments take an active role in emliminating waste POSTAL mail? SPAM is annoying, but at the end of the day, it's just wasted bits, not wasted natural resources..
god, I feel like such a hippy for complaining about this... I need to get back into floursecent lighting to regain my apathy and cynicism.
Why would you want a cellphone/pda combo? or a cellphone/mp3 player combo? The first thing they tell you when you get on a plane is TURN OFF YOUR CELLPHONE. As soon as your devices are combined you lose them all whenever you fly..
Couldn't YouTube be considered a type of club?
it's also linked on GKO's front page:
kgoam810.com
They have streams for Windows Media Player or Real Player
anyone know how these stats compare with standard mail?

anybody got links to some actual content? I could use a good laugh!
this looks like it.
"Ximeta Netdisk Portable 160GB. NetDisk is a HDD that is connected directly to the network through the Ethernet interface."
TigerDirect.com sells them. I think I want one!
actually, the article says they still support Windows Messenger 4.7, which is basically the same as MSN 5 without all the MSN ads.
The trick is that MS makes it kind of hard to get a copy of 4.7. It's not available on messenger.microsoft.com, but you can get it from here.
The cool thing about 4.7 is that 3rd party developers can write add-ins for it (like the hotmail add-in for messenger).

Whenever I'm gettting to know a girl I'm intrested in this sort of image always comes to mind. I always wonder "could we have crossed paths before?"
Over time the lines might come close to crossing, but they never touch. Then one day it happens.
Google Groups to the rescue!

I always thought it would be cool if I could interact with my machine via a messenger bot, but at the time there wasn't much out there.
These guys have some tutorials and a 'bot base' with bot related tasks that other people have written.
There's also a plug-in that will let you pgp encrypt messages.
sweet!

it looks funny as hell..

don't combine my cellphone with anything!
So, where might one find an 'evil' robot that looks specifically in places robots.txt tells it not to? hypothetically speaking, of course...
as discussed on slashdot before, I think that this computer generated art can be considered 'art'. It conveys a message..
