Ahh yes, but the space-time window in which we're viewing is very, very, very, very, very, very (get the picture?) recent and equally narrow.

If you're into this subject, I suggest reading "Hyperspace" by Michio Kaku. Good book, and he's got at least a chapter on the statistical analysis of the existance of life in the Universe. Very good book all around :)

Check out here. That's a GPL'ed book a professor at my school (go NM Tech!) has written as an interesting freshman year physics book. It covers some basic QM, amonsgt the other things you usually get freshman year in physics.

In earnest, that book is a work in progress and it's really important to do the problems to get the full meaning from the text.

    Hope that helps :)

I'm sure all the science these people have learned in high school will be only more solidified in their minds after working on this sort of challenge. As my Pre-EE class taught me a new, more involved, way of thinking this sort of BattleBot challenge will benefit people in high school in similar ways. That is, learning to apply the knowledge they had learned (or, roughly memorized) in other classes will help them truelly understand that knowledge.

I suggest going with the ECS line (60 bucks for their AMD/SIS board) and an older duron (older ones can get had for 30/each) and figure you'll spend about 60 on ram (for like 256 megs ddr, if you really need that much).

At any rate, if you can manage to keep things homogeneous you can use a *nix box to copy the intall on one drive to another. Doing a dd of just the partition will get you a system that's not bootable, so you'll either need to boot every machine with a dos disk, or if you switch to Linux just run lilo after using a rescue/boot floppy (or cd).

I know this is /. and you've heard this a ton before, but switching to Linux in this senario would save you A HUGE AMOUNT OF MONEY. That might not be extremely true if you've already bought enough licenses of windows, but I highly suggest moving to Linux, for the price at least :P

Next, tell them all to get rid of them in less than x amount of commands, but before that tell them about rm and find (as well as error redirection, as it might be handy). Now, do the *smart* thing of doing a find / -name '*uselessfile*' | rm - . See what they do when you do the thing in one command while they're still doing it the hard way.

Thing is, before I do that I'd have to really research this and I'd suggest anyone elses who's interested do the same. Civil disobedience is nice, but you have to be ready to pay dearly.

Also, living in the US doesn't make me nor anyone else powerful against our government simply because we can *write our senators*. Not saying it wont help anything, but something along that line's isn't what I was talking about in this case. Which one would be more effective? Well, civil disobedience has _worked_ in the past and can work again, but I'm at a loss for examples where writing a senator has actually gotten anything done (minus the killing of a tree for the paper).
