  1. SpeeDev anybody? on Designing a New Version Control System? · · Score: 2
Our project just bought into a tool called Speedev. Anyone heard of them? Anyone using this product?

The product demo was impressive. Seems to a complete SCM tool. The problem with most source code tools like SourceForge and CVS is that they don't really address the entire SCM process in one integrated tool. Why is that? What tools to you use for Requirements tracking? Defect tracking? Testing?

Collusion of ISPs - Remember the story last month where the leading companies in the Cable internet Biz got together? Think the only thing they talked about was capping bandwidths lower? Call it the OPEC of the internet. A handfull of companies control the fastest growing, and only viable, highspeed internet access. They can either backbight each other or agree to sell under terms where everyone gets a profitable piece of the pie

Market consolidation. look to see even more consolidation in the industry. Bandwidth providers combining with connection providers and maybe even content providers. The market is unhealthy with all the instability on Wallstreet many companies are ripe for takover or ready to deal.

My friends, the days of the "good deals" are over. Cable internet providers know they own the future of internet access and are making sure that future is profitible to the max. Look at it this way, what choice do you have?

One thing I don't like is that under Windows it has a wonderful tabbed interface (ala Moz) but under linux it just has buffer forward-back buttons.

What I find amusing about this discussion is that the same people who slam Microsoft's proprietary cutthroat tactics and support a ,for the most part, inferior product jump on the NVidia bandwagon every chance they get. Or, as the GNU gurus so often put it, you don't like the drivers? Write better ones!

I also happen to think that people get way too hung up over the 2% of the time they are playing games when the other 98% ofthe time they would be better off with a ATI or Matrox card.

  14. Stop Slamming ATI on Dual GPU graphics solution from ATi? · · Score: 5, Informative

I read a lot of people complaining about ATI. I think people need to put a little perspective on things. NVidia came out of the blue and used their superior 3D chipsets to grab the mainstream Video market. ATI's response was slow at first, but is really gaining steam. I've got a Mobility M4 in my laptop with great new OpenGL drivers. In my home PC I've got a Radeon 8500 LE that runs 99.9% of all the DirectX games. In the case of the former, my 2D performance was the biggest factor. In the latter, the price gap for comarative performance was a joke. $99 for the ATI Radeon 8500 LE (NewEgg.com) vs $180 for a Nvidia GF4 4400. NVidia is now using their market dominance to bleed the market (a familiar strategy that eventually backfires). Not to mention the beautiful All-In-Wonder I bought for my parent's computer that has the best MultiMedia and TV Tuner I've seen (DScaler ain't bad but can't seem to pick up as many stations).

For all you GNU/Linux junkies, ATI has been much more forthcoming in information for developing XF86 drivers than NVidia(proprietary binary only).

Just as community rules dictate where the local stip club can operate, its not necessarily a "free-speech" or "freedom from religion" issue, but more a matter of "what norms and values do I cherish and protect".

Of course, I'm also against forcing any person to swear to an oath they don't believe in, but taking a quick trip down the slippery slope to "because Joey doesn't want to recite the oath, no-one is allowed to recite the oath" is well...sad. But then again, it seems more and more we are reinforcing a set of values in our society that says that taking civic responsibility or responsibility of any sort is not necessary.

But then again, I don't see the big deal in pulling two words out of the oath. They always seemed to be patched into the phrase in the first place. My objection is only with the government forcing people to take out the words...or not allow the words to be spoken under any circumstance in a publicly owned establishment. I would also point out that this is yet another reason to question the government's near total forced molopoly on education.

On the other hand, between my wife and my mom I've had plenty of experience with the frustation users feel at radical changes. For instance the new option in MS Office Apps that default hides infrequently used Menu options and toolbar icons. It took me almost an hour to tell my mom over the phone how to get her right-justify button back.

There is hope though, if Adobe keeps patenting obvious GUI interface concepts we'll all be back to command line programs and the point will be moot.
