Disney bought out Miramax a while back. Many people were very pissed about this because Miramax always did a good job when releasing foreign films in the US. One can only imagine what Disney would do to to this film if they hadn't had to sign that contract with Studio Ghibli. From what I can tell Spirited Away will be released by Buena Vista this time.

Sorry I can't agree with this part of your comment. Disney will not let it be HUGE. They will keep it in the indie and art theaters, you will not see this on 6 screens at your local giga-plex theater. If it shows on more than 100 screens at a time I'll be shocked. The American public will never be addicted to Anime, simply because it's too foreign. To watch most Anime you need to understand the story behind it.

On top of that you will see almost *no* advertisement and mostly Anime fans will be the only people to see it.

The nearest theater to me will be 300 or 400 miles away. It will never show in a town close to me and no one around here will hear much about it. I get requests for every new Disney title no matter how obscure, but this one won't show up on my customers radar.

Before the Betamax court case the studios said that you couldn't rent videotapes. The FBI warining isn't all BS but it dosen't apply unless you copy the tape for non-fair use reasons. I hope that made it a little clearer.

Actually, rentals and retail are priced differently even if they ship to the market simultaneously. Video Stores pay $100 for their copy because they are licensing it to rent, unlike the consumer who pays $10 and gets a license only for "private" viewing.

Well... close but not exactly. Most of the VHS tapes I buy are "Rental Priced" that use to mean retail prices at $89 to $100 each. My wholesale discount would be 35% or so depending on my deal with the distributor. Since DVDs have come out the price of tapes has dropped a lot. The big chains pay almost nothing for their tapes since most have a lease agreement with the studios for a part of the rental fee, but even that is coming to an end because of DVDs. The right I have to rent out the tape or DVD is called "First sale", I bought it I can rent it to some one else to watch. The tapes are the same as you would buy for $19.95 the video stores just get them a few weeks early they call this the "Rental Window". BTW there is an execption in the law for music CDs and computer games. These can't be rented out unless you have permission from the copyright holder.

    In the Biz Since 1987
    5000+ videotapes
    650+ Anime
And the best Damn pizzas around!
Now if I just had some more customers I'd be set.

Is sneaking into a movie theater or an amusement park not a crime?

yep it's a crime, but not theft. It's more like trespassing because you don't have permission to be on their property. In a theater if you didn't pay then you don't count toward the amount the studio charges the theater for the film rental. (as much as 90% of the admissions price) However if you buy popcorn and a coke the theater makes money and probley won't give a shit if you paid to get in or not. If they got too lax on their security the studios would get pissed, but short of making everyone show their ticket when they left it might be hard to enforce.

As I understand the US sales tax rules, if a customer in New Jersey buys my product, I must charge him NJ sales tax but I must charge the Californian customer California sales tax. In fact, I believe, I have to be even more local than that and work out the correct rate applicable to my customer's zip code.

Well, sort of... There is no US sales tax. The states each have their own taxes and rules. In Texas (where I live) you have to collect sales taxes if you sell to someone in Texas but not to someone outside the state. If I buy something from outside Texas I have to fill out a little form and pay a "use" tax instead of "sales" tax. I haven't ever heard of someone accually paying a "use" tax. If I buy something from a company in another state that is doing Business in Texas, they have to charge me sales tax based on their location in Texas (I think). Also most cities have their own sales tax so it can get more complicated.

In the UK, we have something similar with VAT which is charged at different rates (or not at all) depending on which country I'm selling to.

I think that is the EU's way of collecting a "sales" like tax so people won't cheat and buy something from Germany instead of the UK or other places to avoid the local taxes.

Why should the logic be any different when we're working out whose laws apply?

Mostly I don't want the UK goverment or any goverment outside the US tell me that I can't host something they don't like on the 'net. If it's hosted in the UK then fine, but if it's hosted in the US their laws just don't apply. The same goes for the US (MPAA/RIAA) shutting down sites on NON-US hosts. If it's not against the law in the UK and is against the law in the US tough shit. The US shouldn't have any recourse outside of asking politely. The same goes for everyone else.

I haven't written any device drivers, I only adminster my own little network and I *only* have a highschool education (well +life).

and even *I* don't feel like using linux anymore.

I still do like it and have used it exclusively since 1995.

Your answer boils down to a single, simple answer... Linux is far too complicated.

That depends on what you want to use Linux for. I build my computer *for* Linux I make sure the stuff I buy works well with Linux before I buy it. I haven't had to compile a kernel in a long time

It boils down to this... I buy a machine and I can put Windows XP on it and it takes me a *total* of two hours after which *everything* on the machine functions and I didn't have to know or choose any options at all. I can choose from a selection of thousands of fully functional software application and all the latest games and entertainment.

The last time (last week) I installed XP I spent 1/2 hr. on the net trying to find the right video driver because XP couldn't find the proper driver on the CD. I then installed the drivers for the DSL modem XP picked and installed the wrong one... fiddled with XP for a 1/2 hour, the called the ISP. They said XP always picks the wrong driver and I should tell it to use driver (x). XP complained that I was trying to install the wrong driver (are you sure? , Yes) it installed and worked. Now Linux doesn't currently support this DSL modem, but what do you want to bet that when it does it will be found on the install.

And as far as those modems that don't work, their called Winmodems for a reason.

Answer: Your mother doesn't use linux because its too complicated.

Tell that to my biker friend, He came a while back and had me install Linux for him. He knows very little about computers. I do all of his re-installs and upgrades. Since installing Linux He hasn't has any problems and is installing and uninstalling apps. himself. I haven't had to fix his computer after a crash in more than 6 mos.

Maybe thats why everyone keeps saying that Linux is too hard to use. They just want people to have to bring their computers in every week or two for "fixin'"

The zirconium is interesting, it make me wonder how hard it is to machine. Ive seen high silicon alumnium that was a bitch to machine.
