I was pretty disappointed once I read the review and realized that this company wasn't making drivers for the Mouse. Their business plan was foolish along the lines of "myextremefuneral.com".
I suppose they don't teach common sense up at Wharton.
...can all easily stop killing off the rain forests with a little common sense.
Where have you heard that rainforests are cleared for paper production? Paper is usually made from pulp harvested from tree farms, which IIRC use Southern Pine and other dime-a-dozen species. Rainforests are usually cleared for cattle ranching, construction, and exotic hardwoods.
I've already seen several posters who rate electronic documents over paper documents because of the tree-saving factor; have they all forgotten that the pc uses electricity, which consumes all sorts of natural resources? I'm as much for saving the environment as the next guy is. Let's start by being factual: does anybody have a reliable comparison of Total Energy Cost of paper & electronic documents?
Except the concept of Deception is always called by deceptive expressions such as "thinking outside of the box", "pushing boundaries", etc... I bet someone at Verisign got a bonus for this, because surely hundreds of people have fallen for the ruse.
I'm not preaching any alternative economic system here; I'm just asking you to not be so shocked that a company is deceiving people to become customers. It comes with the territory.
Especially if everybody does some variation of this:

Someone may reach the conclusion that we as a wired subspecies are obsessed with the Ice Age, Celebrity Boxing, and Scientology. Oh, and Natalie Portman.
They are pulling out all the stops with the name Consumer Broadband and Digital Television Promotion Act:
Changed name from SSSCA, so anybody who missed the name change might think that the damn thing just died in a committee somewhere. Really slick...
What? You don't want to Promote Broadband for Consumers? Damn hippie! A shameless exaggeration, but why do the names of these things have to be so loaded and so dishonest? A more appropriate name would be Congressional Omnibus Profit Maximization and Power Consolidation Act of 2002.
No! Creatitivity can not be compelled. The parent post spoke of Michelangelo, so you should do some research before replying. Read The Agony and the Ecstacy for a better--although fictionalized--insight into the life of an artist.
While I admire the author's brave attempt to establish a new model, I must conclude that he has failed: Applying a quantitative measurement to a qualitative phenomenon is absurd. Do we judge a painter by the number of brushstrokes and conclude that Rothko is lazy and Van Gogh is a diligent worker?
There are many qualitative components by which a programmer can potentially be judged: sheer output, ability to debug others' code, ability to have code debugged by others, ability to create understandable extra-code documentation, affinity for the lifestyle of the person doing the judging (i.e., likes to go out for a beer after work, roots for the same professional sports team, etc...), concentration skills, hygeine, and so on. Attaching metrics to this is nothing short of masturbating one's ego. There is a wonderful allegory to this in Robert Anton Wilson's Schrödinger's Cat trilogy, in which a self-important researcher attempts to rate a woman's orgasm using measurements on scales developed by the doctor himself.
To my surprise, he actually took the time to respond to my questions and bring me up to date with what he has been doing in the post TSR days.
Here goes my karma, but this is not a troll: I think you have experienced the phenomenon known as "retirement". He was probably very grateful to be contacted by anybody other than a creditor or direct marketer. Did he invite you to just drop by if you're ever in the neighborhood? That's a sure sign he is out of work.
Maybe we can live the unsavory aspects of life vicariously through robots. For example, we could let robots have wars and kill each other--not just on Battlebots, but in Afghanistan and anywhere else the U.S. stages its wars.
Better yet, employ robots in menial manufacturing jobs so that humans can reach some semblance of equality. Just a thought, but flame away.
In Germany they came first for the Communists and I didn't speak up
because I wasn't a Communist. Then they came for the Jews and I didn't
speak up because I wasn't a Jew. Then they came for the trade unionists
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a trade unionist. Then they came for
the Catholics and I didn't speak up because I was a Protestant. Then they
came for me--and by that time no one was left to speak up.

I saw it during the Super Bowl last Sunday. Something about "Where do terrorists get their money? If you buy pirated software, some of it might come from you.".
Check out space4peace.org's website. Military vet Bruce Gagnon has done a lot of work on behalf of The Global Network Against Weapons and Nuclear Power in Space to bring awareness to the public. After you read his site, check out what more google has to offer. He has done his homework and avoids zealotry.
Absolutely correct. I was first tipped off years ago when I read the recipe for LSD. It suggests adding a small quantity of Strychnine (sic) to the batch of LSD. The Strych acts as a mild stimulant with an annoying body load, serving to increase the likelihood of having a bad trip. The result: more bad trips, fulfillment of The Man's prophecy that LSD causes bad trips, and justification for furthering the WO(S)D.
The first time I did pure (liquid) acid I noticed that the physical effect was somewhere between Valium and H2O--a far cry from Strychnine's effects.
Intel is wagering on the Itanium, which also processes 64 bits of data at a time and has the added ability to execute many instructions simultaneously.
Haven't they heard of pipelining and superscalar architecture? Is that statement a result of:
Intel's marketing folks having no clue
SJMN reporter not doing his homework
It's quite possible that this processor family makes more advanced use of superscalar architecture and multiple pipelines, but statements like his portray a false idea. I bet we won't see a retraction.
There is no free market. The "invisible hand" is the CEOs of the media companies, arms manufacturers, PACs, tobacco companies, biotech firms, and private foundations gathering at Bohemian Club, Bildeberger, WTO, etc... to "not discuss business". The whole world is run through collusion.
The other companies will adopt Comcast's policy, because it guarantees the highest profit.
We should be getting used to this, considering the series of precedents we have accepted:
You may intoxicate yourself with Ethylene, caffeine, nicotine, theobromine, and pharmaceuticals prescribed to you by your doctor. If you choose any other means, you are an [FNORD] evil drug user and we will throw you in jail, take away your kids, and steal your home
You may have a sexual or emotional relationship with one member of the opposite sex at a time, provided that person is over 18 years of age. If you choose any other combination you are a [FNORD] pervert and you will be jailed or you will lose retirement benefits, health benefits, etc...
You may participate in certain religions groups. Otherwise you belong to an [FNORD] evil cult and we will firebomb your church and shoot you.
Why is it that I can sign for service from a provider, that provider can change the rules of the game by sending me a letter saying "these are our new rules...by continuing to use...you agree...", and then call me a thief when I continue to use the service in the manner which was acceptable to them when I first subscribed? A typical/bot will retort "if you don't like it, switch providers", but all the other providers are doing the same thing. It reeks of bait-and-switch coupled with universal collusion. As usual, we have no choice but to comply and allow greater control of our lives by faceless third parties.
We keep hearing the "If you have nothing to hide, then you have nothing to worry about" argument in all media formats, especially slashdot. Shouldn't this apply to corporations and government agencies as well? The proper way for the Feds to handle Enron would have been to send in armed agents to sieze hard drives and filing cabinets, rather than give them months to destroy everything. The same policy should be applied to Cheney's handling of his dirty oil company dealings. The same should have been applied to the Reagan/Bush administration during the Iran/Contra days. This biased application of forceful seizure of evidence has our prisons full of private citizens while crooked pols and crooked execs stroll around in search of their next scam.
If you need a Document Retention policy for any reason other than reducing storage space, it's time to check your ethics.
Good point. I think your hypo will occur and millions of Americans (and ROTW) will reward their poor lifestyle decisions with expensive medical fixes, leading to skyrocketing medical/insurance costs. Meanwhile, millions of other Americans are consciously choosing healthy lifestyles not only for the benefits of reduced frequency of illness and reduced medical/insurance costs, but for the benefit of feeling better 24 hours a day.
I think the gap between the two will widen and become more obvious. Hopefully, the problem will beget its own solution as people abandon the endless cycle (well, endless until death...) of bad lifestyle decision followed by painful/expensive medical procedures/drugs and complications, and seek a lifestyle that benefits the body and mind with maximum health and enjoyment.

They are pulling out all the stops with the name Consumer Broadband and Digital Television Promotion Act:
According to former Screen Actors Guild President Ronald Reagan, trees are the true source of the problem.
I hope someone cleans that thing up soon.

Some people are using the Internet for very serious things--like marriage proposals. Good luck, Mr. & Mrs. Taco!!!
I love how 1st class fliers get the kid glove treatment anyway. "Oh. Right this way, Mr. Atta. Have a nice stay in Los Angeles..."
