Why would you think of your grandpa any differently just because you found his porn stash? That's to be expected whether or not you're a hypocrite about it.
Next time you see some old fart walking down the street, just remember that he/she was once a young hornydog too.
But actually living in the computer (ala Lawnmowerman) is a long long way away.
*sigh*... You're still stuck in the thinking that technological progress is linear, when history shows that it's in fact exponential, and that we're just now on the steep knee of the curve. i.e. We've reached the Tipping Point and the future isn't as far away as you think it is.
I'm doing my best to help this unpopular meme spread.
1 Terabyte (capacity) disk for (get this) only $1,199.00!(USD)
What's so amazing about that? HD space has been under one dollar per gigabyte for a few years now. Add the cost of RAID and it's still under a buck a gig.
No, it wouldn't. Pilots will sooner be replaced by unmanned aircraft than be retrofitted with BCI. The human brain & body won't be able to compete with UAVs.
Conversely, there will likely come a day when artificial limbs are superior to natural ones
There will also come a day not too long after that when transcendental virtual life is superior to the cyborg bodies of meat-space. IMO, our cyborg stage will be very short-lived.
The dead matter and energy of the old "natural" world will be put to better use when reconfigured (w/nanotech) into intelligent matter.
As do I, but it depresses me that this is more information than I can absorb in a couple lifetimes without the aid of near-future intelligence amplification technology.
A solar powered jacket would require you to be... outside... with that big bright light up in the sky shining down radiation(!). No thanks. The better solution would be to drink mass quantities of carbonated sugarwater, then converting the extra glucose in your bloodstream into the power that you need (to operate the computer that orders you more Coke, that gets converted to the power you need to...)
I am wondering what other ways are there to obtain a laptop replacement part?
Why don't you just manufacture your own parts with a 3D printer? Download the shapefile off P2P and print away-- I'm sure someone has scanned this exact same bezel part and shared it by now.
It shouldn't cost you more than a few pennies assuming you bought a generic LiquidPlastic cartridge to go with your blackmarket OpenPrinter, instead of those crappy DRM-locked ones that only print what's on the authorized list. </backtothefuture>
The only thing that would make this special is if the apartment was located off the electrical grid in the middle of nowhere, because it's in those situations that energy-efficient LED lighting really shines (pun intended).
Just having a viable digital product for sale isn't enough; IMO, you also need to earn the respect of those who would support your intangible efforts in a world where it's impossible to enforce artificial scarcity. Without that human relationship between "producer" and "consumer", getting funded will be much much harder.
"Information economics, in the absence of objects, will be based more on relationship than possession." -- John Perry Barlow
I don't play Simcity anymore for an entirely different reason: I get frustrated that you can't (yet) simulate post-scarcity economies with nanotech/robotic-labor/AI/etc. The industrial and commercial sectors should shrink to nothing.:-)
How cool would it be to walk down any street in the country, and be able to call up the name, location, and menu of every Chinese restaurant within seven blocks?
Very cool, since you could get that information ANONYMOUSLY (in an open mesh network), vs the current cell providers' plans to provide "location based services" because they know exactly who and where you are at all times.
Augmented reality will open up all kinds of possibilities. Vernor Vinge's short story Fast Times at Fairmont High is great take on such a fast-paced and interconnected future.
I think I speak for all of us when I say, "get control of yourself!... Something-About-Mary-Style", then the boothbabes' power can't affect you for at least 6 hours.
"The electronics industry would obviously like you to buy a big (expensive) display of some sort.."
I'm not shelling out any cash for a new display until I can get a true flatscreen display. This means I'll be waiting ~5+ more years for OLED, and flexible FOLED to hit the mainstream market.
Of course, this better and cheaper tech will canibalize the huge investments in current LCD/Plasma/etc, but that's not my problem. I'm just glad that the era of expensive, heavy, highly-toxic, energy-wasteful displays is almost over.
There is one thing that can put the cat back in the bag: "Trusted Computing." If the bait and switch works, users will no longer be in control of their computers or the internet, and it's not too hard to imagine this depressing future being phased in.
Future headline: "MAE-East and MAE-West routers begin dropping ``UnTrusted'' packets; wireless traffic at all time high"
porn really tends to not go over so well with most crowds.
You only DJ in the U.S.? Sex isn't such a big taboo in other parts of the world. Or maybe it's a universal thing that the girlfriends in the crowd don't want the guys thinking about sex with anyone else.
Cash is still king... until "they" decide that it's time to put RFID's in all bills, and/or put more effort into tracking serial numbers, and/or eliminate cash alltogether because only terrorists have anything to hide (under their mattress).
So maybe they're legally prevented from verbally informing me if I'm being snooped on, but can they still do what my friendly librarian does by giving me a *wink**wink* along with a complimentary Asscroft bookmark?

(Sorry Pilots).

You need to familiarize yourself with The Law of Accelerating Returns.
The future is closer than you think, and getting closer all the time.

Since you can already fake fingerprints with gelatin, it's not such a stretch to imagine the same with palmprints.

Hardly the same cost. You'll/we'll be paying higher environmental/energy/muscle costs for the plasma. (But of course you probably drive an SUV too.)
