Actually Microsoft might have better luck with EXT2/EXT3/JFS etc file system support that is superior to NTFS/FAT16/FAT32 and the standards are already well published and should be easier for Microsoft to adopt than the WinFS system. Microsoft should look out because ReactOS is planning for EXT2/EXT3/JFS file system support and it is starting to run some Windows applications without problems (most Windows programs have issues, but ReactOS is slowly improving) and while ReactOS is not ready for Prime-Time, in a few years, who knows? Once it adds Windows driver support, DirectX support, sound card support, and other features, possibly by a 1.0 release (now in 0.30 RC1 release) it might steal some thunder from Microsoft Windows and Vista, if it runs on systems that Vista won't run on.

Vista is a resource hog anyway, it needs 512M of RAM just to run, and still the swap file keeps growing. You will find many effects will be disabled by some systems just to get a decent performance out of Vista. I think the public release Beta ISO was like almost 4 gigs in size, showing how huge Vista really is. I figure it is like Microsoft stuffing 15 pounds of manure into a 5 pound bag.

Me I am going to stick with Windows XP and ignore Vista until the service packs fix Vista to be stable enough on hardware I can afford to run it on. I'll use Linux until then as well. I am keeping my eye on ReactOS to see if it reaches XP level success, and then I might switch over to it.

  7. Re:Worst. Idea. Ever. on PS3 Apparently A Computer · · Score: 1

The real reason why the PS3 will fail as a computer is the same reason why the Atari 400/800/1600, Commodore 64/128, Atari ST/TT/Falcon, and Commodore Amiga failed as computers. They were computers, but geared towards a gaming market, so that serious software like that developed for the Apple // and IBM PC and later Macintosh was not developed for the gaming computers, but they did have a lot of games.

The only way the PS3 can seriously compete with PCs and Macs is if it can run Windows, Mac OSX, Linux, *BSD Unix or some other popular OS that it can dual boot into (besides the PS3 OS that plays PS1/PS2/PS3 games) in order to run the software that people want to run on a computer. The PS3 uses a Cell PowerPC processor so Windows is out, Apple won't license OSX to OEMs so Mac OSX is out, which leaves Linux or *BSD Unix. If Sony does to the PS3 what it does to the PSP, it will make sure that the firmware won't allow homebrew applications and operating systems which leaves Linux and *BSD out unless Sony makes an official version. I doubt that they will. Most likely they will turn the PS3 OS into a computer OS with optional keyboard and mouse attachments, and use a hard drive or flash memory for secondary storage. Then try to control what software is developed for it via DRM, and only the game makers are interested in developing for it.

That in itself, is why the PS3 will fail as a computer.

Ironically for a little bit more, you can afford a Mac Mini and plug it into your old SVGA monitor. By the time you add on a hard drive, keyboard, mouse, etc to the PS3 you will most likely exceed the $599 Mac Mini price tag, and your typical generic $500 Windows PC systems. While they won't play PS1/PS2/PS3 games, without some emulator that is not 100% compatable, at least they have the software you need for a computer.

I set up a web server on my laptop with a Wiki site after the owner advised me to find a better way to keep track of documentation. The network administrator saw that I had a web server and had me shut it down. It was only on a local Intranet and it gave me a better idea of how changes were being implemented. I had tried to use many tools like that to help bring order out of the chaos they had, but I guess they just wanted to make my job a lot harder so it would stress me out and force me to quit? I had a lot of ideas for the software and database that coworkers called me names over having those ideas. I see now that the web site for the company has all of my ideas as product features now, after they fired me for no reason given. I was only highed to migrate their database to SQL Server and fix the flaws and bugs and performance problems in their software and database, once I fixed all of that, I was unjustly fired. The programs were compared to the results of hand calculated results that where tripled checked for accuracy. I worked until the application's results matched the formulas used and the hand and calculator checked work.

Usually the evolution went something like this:

Excel -> Access -> Visual BASIC -> Active Server Pages.

Sometimes Access and Visual BASIC were skipped to go straight into an ASP developed Intranet. Sometimes the employer just wanted an Access based database with forums. Whenever they found someone using and Excel spreadsheet, they came up with an idea to make a Database out of it and a custom application using Access BASIC, Visual BASIC, or Active Server Pages.

Other languages and platforms can be used for the same results. Keep in mind that bugs can develop in custom applications that can yeild incorrect results. That bugs often come about when a rush is made to meet deadlines, or the programmer is told to skip the analysis and design cycles and start coding on day one. There is a proper way to do this to minimize bugs, and there is an improper way to do it which maximizes bugs.

Well I agree, and Microsoft will shut out a lot of people, or force them to keep using Windows XP if not enough third party hardware is supported. Microsoft screwed Reveal before by refusing to support their hardware for Windows 95 and 98 and above. Lucky Reveal users could search by FCC-ID number to find the true makers of the hardware and obtain drivers for sound cards, ect for Windows 95 and above. I think Linux supports the Reveal hardware now, and Linux has a good track record of supporting older hardware.

Microsoft keeps changing the Windows driver model, and I think it is part of their business plan to do that to force people to use the latest and greatest hardware on the current version of Windows and shut out old hardware so they don't have to support it anymore.

Those worried about checking the HCL (Hardware Compatability List) of Vista can download an application from Microsoft to check your system to see if it is Vista ready. It will tell you what hardware is ready, and what is not supported. It will even tell you if you have enough memory (usually 512M is needed, but on systems that share System RAM with Video RAM and have 512M total and 448M free, the tool will complain about that shortcoming).

If people are shut out by old hardware they can switch to Linux, or try ReactOS when it reaches 1.0 in a few years or so, possibly after Vista has come out already. ReactOS has plans to support the WDM model and other older Windows driver models. I feel that ReactOS has a future, if they can pass that software audit, and reach the 1.0 milestone.

I got a sneak peak at Vista on my laptop, it supported my Ethernet adapter but not my Wireless adapter, it supported my video card (but said it did not meet standards) but not my audio adapter. My 512M of RAM was the minimum, but not enough to run it fast. Chances are I'll have to buy a new laptop to run Vista, possibly one with Vista pre-loaded on it. I think that is what Microsoft is trying to do, force a new hardware purchase to run Vista. Because they own stock in a lot of hardware companies.

There needs to be a holigram on the National ID card, to foil counterfets. It needs to be required for holding jobs to show a National ID card, in case of a Visa holder it should show the expiration date of the Visa on it. It should double as a driver's license and allow the smart chip part to store the driver's license number on it, along with proof of insurance. The National ID card can be keyed with credit card numbers so you can shop with it and provide biometric info (thumbprint) that you are the holder of the card, and it allows you to choose what bank account or credit card or debit card to charge for payments. Libraries should be able to use it for a library card. You can swipe it into a computer to verify your identity after a biometic scan of your thumb. There needs to be many uses for the National ID card to get people to carry it on them at all times.

Right now in the USA we have Driver's Licenses and State IDs which vary by the state. The 911 hijackers were able to use Driver's Licenses and one of them was caught by the Police for a traffic violation, but he was let go. Somehow he had a driver's license from a state that did not require checking and even gave them to illegal aliens, which causes problems in our system.

My advice, go to a community college first and pick up some certificates and an associates and then move on to a bachelors and masters. A lot of the people out of work in the IT field lack the degrees. Companies want to hire degreed people with experience and many have the experience but lack the degree because they are self taught or dropped out of college. Don't drop out of college, that is a mistake. India, has free or discounted education for IT people so they can get a lot of the work offshored to their nation.
