One more thing, every system needs different settings for Audacity to use the sound card properly as a recording device. Choose "Sound Mixer" from the drop down box under the Microphone/Input slider. Click on the Edit menu, choose Preferences, select a recording device. Look for the name of your sound card here like "Sound Blaster AWE64" or whatever. For channels, choose at least two for stereo recording.

Do a test run of playing a music file while recording. Bump the speaker slider control all the way up, and move the microphone/input slider to a level where the audio data maxes out in waves but does not go over the range. If you cannot get the range all the way up, you can select the whole data recording and choose the Effect menu and use Amplify to boost the levels. If you do it right, you can find the sweet spot that your Audacity will record music for you at proper levels.

Yes MP3 exports requires the LAME library which can be downloaded from the link to the Audacity site. OGG format is supported because it is a F/OSS standard.

It takes practice, and you have to tweak the settings as I described above. If you set everything up correctly, you have a sound studio on your PC that can record music from iTunes or any other music player. Even web based music players will work with this. No need to pay for commercial audio grabber programs when Audacity is F/OSS.

    Enjoy it, you music lovers!

  2. How to convert a song from Freeplay to Non-DRM on DVD Jon's DoubleTwist Unlocks the iPod · · Score: 2, Insightful

#1 Download Audacity or some other F/OSS audio program that allows you to capture and edit sounds from your sound card.

#2 Buy MP3 Freeplay Songs from Apple iTunes for your iPod or to play on iTunes.

#3 Open up Audacity, select your sound card output as the source, check the volume. Get the record button ready on a new audio file. Hit the record button in Audacity and hit the play button on iTunes, when the iTunes program is finished playing the song, stop the recording and cut out the silence between the song playing and "Export" to MP3 or OGG or whatever format you wish to export to. (Might need the LAME library to make a MP3)

#4 You now have a MP3 or OGG file without any DRM, quality may vary. Play it on your Non-Freeplay, Linux, OS/2, BeOS, whatever system or music player.

If the RIAA and Apple throws a hissy fit about this, reference the MPAA verses BetaMax case and the RIAA verses Casette recorders case, and see how TiVO brought about digital rights to make recordings of TV shows, movies, songs, etc as long as you paid for access to them first or got them off a free broadcast.

Remember as long as you own the rights to listen to a song, you have a right to a backup. This method does not remove DRM, nor does it crack it, in fact it does not even modify the original SafePlay file, all it does is make a standard audio file recording of the audio file you have the rights to listen to anyway. The downside is that it takes a long while to convert your collection over that way, but the upside is that it is not costly to do so.

Want to really test the WGA? Use your original copy of Windows XP and search the Internet for a known CD-Key and install with that key that millions of other people have used. Then watch as the retail or OEM version of Windows with unpatched WGA files reports you as a pirate.

Ninja Pirate Hackers and Crackers have modified the WGA files with something called MSIL that is like assembly language. For example if a valid key is found, you might have a comparision done and a JNE to 2000:1345 which calls the part of the code that turns on the "Your copy of Windows is not legit" function. Turn that JNE 2000:1345 into a NOP and the comparison does not match and the program does not jump into the Anti-Pirate code. Or change it to a JE 2000:1345 and if a valid key is found it jumps to the Anti-Pirate code and if an invalid key it does not. Or just take the code at 2000:1345 that turns on the Pirated bit and fill it with NOPs. I am just guessing here, I could be wrong, but I think the pirated version of Windows and those WGA-Fix patches do those sort of things.

Meanwhile my legit copy of Windows XP has to have the WGA spyware on it to get updates from Microsoft. Yeah Windows Update and Microsoft Update require that I install WGA in order to use them. If not, no updates from the web. WGA trashed my fast user switching after it got installed. I can see the WGA files eating my system memory, CPU cycles, and using up bandwidth to report back to Microsoft, yes folks it is spyware. I would guess the pirate version of the WGA Fixed files remove the spyware as well.

Not only that I heard that the pirate version of XP has special tweaks and bug fixes that the retail and OEM versions do not have. Yet your chances of malware infections are greater with the pirate version, because you never know who last modified it before you got a copy. So beware.

because natural human thinking is flawed and chaotic, people ought to be taught Critical Thinking. I already posted a lengthy answer on this. Here it is republished to Slashdot:

It won't be easy. If chaos is the problem, then order is the solution. Human beings are not predictable to scientific theory and formulas, they are more complex than that. Your question is difficult to answer without going into non-science related areas like philosophy, religion, emotions, critical thinking, and psychology.

It is a given that human beings are not computers that can be reprogrammed. However, human beings can be taught and educated. If the human race is to come to order, we would need to be taught and trained in order. It would have to succeed where religion, philosophy, psychology, etc have failed. I talked about critical thinking previously, which I believe may be a possible answer. Critical thinking is not biased by religion, philosophy, emotions, and allows a human being to order their thoughts and find a better way of thinking. Yes the current methods of thinking are flawed, and hence we have a chaotic method of human thinking. Critical thinking is not all logic, but it does use logic. Critical thinking is not about ignoring your emotions, but by using your emotions to sense things and as a thinking tool.

With chaotic thinking, human beings cannot follow a budget or control their spending which leads to poverty. With chaotic thinking human beings try to solve their conflicts with violence. With chaotic thinking, human beings cannot properly take care of themselves and allow their health to get worse. With chaotic thinking human beings only think of themselves and not of others. With chaotic thinking human beings waste energy, food, and other things.

With critical thinking, human beings learn how to follow a budget and save money nd learn to live within their incomes and also help out others financially. With critical thinking human beings learn that there are other ways to settle conflicts than violence, and that violence should be a last resort and that compromise can be taken before violence. With critical thinking human beings learn to be responsible for their actions and behavior, which leads to fewer health issues. With critical thinking, human beings learn how to help out other human beings and be kind and generous to them. With critical thinking, human beings learn how to manage their resources to save energy, food, etc.

Many colleges teach critical thinking, but not everyone follows it. If critical thinking was taught in grade school and high school, as well as free classes offered for adults who lack college educations, maybe more people can become critical thinkers?

To make the answer to your question simple, we just need to change our way of thinking and learn to think about everyone else in the world and how to take responsibility for our actions and behaviors.

ReactOS is an OS written from scratch, but working with the WINE development team to impliment API calls and versions of DLLs found in Windows written from scratch to support the known API calls. Because it does not support the undocumented API calls, it has some problems. Because it is a new OS written from scratch it only has a 32M RAM needed to run it, verses the 512M needed for Vista which may contain legacy code etc. The way Vista is being delayed, ReactOS might actually make a 1.0 release before we see a Vista release unless Microsoft starts cutting out features.
