This is not going to work, SCO is using scare tactics to force money out of Linux users and companies that produce Linux distrobutions. Anyone that pays SCO a Linux License will be used as evidence that others must pay as well.

SCO Unix is not the same as Linux, the issue is if Linux is using SCO Unix code which has not yet been proven anywhere.

Good luck trying to get that USB 2.0 or Firewire driver. Hope your video card has a driver, if not use the VGA driver all the way.

You are giving the middle-finger to Microsoft and ignoring the EULA. Good thing they only audit large companies for software audits and not home consumers. Only way they can find out about it is if you call them for tech support and your hardware configuration has changed from the last time you called them and you have the same product key.

  18. IBM Thinkpad cracked LCD screen on Obtaining Replacement Parts for Your Laptop? · · Score: 1

My brother had bought some 200Mhz Pentium MMX laptops from eBay. His sons stepped on the screens and cracked them. He found a replacement part, paid some good money for it, and bought an IBM repair manual. The part did not work and obviously was designed for a different Thinkpad. The IBM repair of the Thinkpad would cost more than the price of buying one used on eBay.

So he gave them to me. I have a laptop just like it that works, but my son dropped it and damaged the hard drive. Same model Thinkpad. I often wanted to get a 9Gig drive for it and dual-boot Windows 98 and Linux on it. I've been to afraid to open it up and change out the hard drive without ruining something. Not the same as working on an ATX case.

The cracked screen Thinkpads can be used as a desktop with a monitor. They are sans CD-ROM, but I have a PCMCIA CD-ROM from my brother. Windows 98 got installed over a network, Windows 95 got installed first from a Zip Drive, and then an upgrade to 98 was done over a network shared CD-ROM.

No local shop will repair it, unless they are an IBM dealer and they will charge more than the laptop is worth.

Ironically I still know people running Windows 3.X or Windows 95 or even DOS. They cannot afford to upgrade to a newer machine or newer software. They could; however, run Linux or *BSD Unix on their systems if they knew how. Not as fast as modern machines, but enough to limp along.

New machines can cost like $500USD to $600USD, and then they have to buy the modern software to run on them, as they cannot use the older software as the EULA usually does not allow them to switch it from one machine to another. Plus it may not run on the newer machine or use all the features.

An alternative is to head to Wal-Mart or some other place that sells a $400USD Lindows machine and use OpenOffice.Org etc. Then they need to be retrained for the new OS and software. Then use OSS software for everything else. This of course would require the assistance of someone like a Slashdotter who is Linux savvy and can train them.

Another alternative is to buy a used machine with 2000 or XP on it, or 2000/XP ready. Still the softare will need to be upgraded. The hardware costs will be less than the new machine.

Yet another alternative is if they have an ATX case, to just get a new ATX motherboard, CPU, Memory, and ATX power supply. Get an all-in-one motherboard with built in Video, Audio, LAN, Modem, etc. Like an NForce2 chipset motherboard. Still need to buy 2000/XP and the software upgrades. The hardware cost will be lower than a new machine, and may be lower than an used machine.

No matter what the option, the 98 user may have to buy new hardware to migrate to 2000/XP.

Microsoft isn't the only option out there. They may have the most marketshare, but there are other options out there. Alternatives to Microsoft products exist. About time Microsoft understands this.

MSOffice is priced too high, Israel understands this. Israel also understands that OpenOffice.org is a lot cheaper and can do much of the same things as MSOffice.

It also said it would encourage the development of lower-priced alternatives. To that end, it is cooperating with Sun Microsystems (NasdaqNM:SUNW - News) and IBM (NYSE:IBM - News) to design a Hebrew language version of OpenOffice software, a freely distributed open-source alternative to Office.

OpenOffice.Org should be ported to many different languages if it is to compete with MSOffice. I see this as a bold move to help bring about an alternative to MSOffice that is more affordable. I wonder if certain Software can be called Kosher? :)

I am reminded of China going with its own version of Linux and trying to develop an alternative to Windows from it. Will more countries get the guts to say "No" to Microsoft and use alternatives or make deals with other companies to create alternatives? I hope so.

This could be the start of a new trend. A movement away from MS products and towards alternatives like OSS products.

One factor not mentioned in the articles is Malware, Windows and MSOffice can easily be inflected by Malware but Linux and OpenOffice.Org are not infected by the same Malware. So there is a hidden cost to the TCO, if the Microsoft software gets infected with Malware. Consider a few hours of downtime to scrub the systems of the Malware infected on it.
