will we need to have a certain level of experience before we can be drafted, or will it be anyone who is computer literate? Who decides this?
I used to be a computer worker until I got too sick to work and went on diability and became a college student. I am getting out of the computer industry and getting into business management. So if I switch careers can I still be drafted?

industry if they do not cater to your needs. If they do business in your country, you can sue them. Check with a local lawyer. The only way they are going to cater to markets outside of the USA is if people outside the USA take legal action. If your country permits you to have an MP3 copy of the music, and there is no way you can get one, then sue so that there can be a way.
MS Office 2003 may not be selling too well, but that is no excuse to give away free copies of it to government employees to boost marketshare.
Rather it would be better to give free copies to the education market that cannot truely afford it. Our college still uses MS Office 2000, and trying to do a PowerPoint XP/2002 Slideshow on a machine with Office 2000 and a Projector loses a lot of the special effects and other things.
Also interesting to note is the media copy protection that MS Office 2003 has in it. Another reason for avoiding MS Office 2003 and sticking with an older version of MS Office or going with OpenOffice.org instead. I can see novices copy protecting their documents that they need to share with others and then someone in a different department tries to open up a shared document and it won't let them, and they need access to the info ASAP. We already see this problem partically when novices set passwords on documents and share them and don't tell anyone else what the password is.

have them compete in the same games as males. Don't treat them like they are inferior, because they are not inferior.
Game companies typically market towards males, but virtually ignore females. There are some females who are interested in the same games as males, but they are a minority. Please do not ignore the other half of the market.
Linux makes up the bulk of web servers and Internet servers out there. Of course it is going to get more attacks as there are more Linux servers than Windows or OSX or *BSD servers. In fact I am shocked that Plan9 or some other Misc OS was not called the safest OS.:) They must have thrown out the results for those Misc OSes as well.
Think about it, divide the number of attacks by the systems that are actually out there to get a fair number of how often the OS is attacked.
How much can you guess that certain OSes will have a higher percent attack rate than others? If Microsoft Windows has 20% of the market and Linux has 60% of the market and MacOSX has 5% of the market, how are those numbers going to change?
I'd like to see some other company do the results and divide the number of machines that run that OS by the attacks and see what percentages they find.
Clark Kent is also an illegal alien having not been born on Earth, and obviously any papers saying so must have been forged or are false. So Clark Kent aka Superman is breaking Civil Law by claiming to be a US Citizen.
To deal with this, use your own statement above from above:
Kal-El was a test tube baby and sent to Earth in the ship inside of a pod.
I believe that the official DC Comics line (from an issue of Wizard magazine long ago) is that Superman was still GESTATING while inside the pod (it would take quite a while for the pod to get to earth right?), and that he was officially "birthed" when the pod opened on American soil. So they can still say he's an all-american superhero (blah, blah, blah).
If I recall he was found as an infant, not a newborn, so he was born in space, not US soil.
On a couple of your other points, Superman's strength and all his other powers are supposed to be due to his cells absorbing our sun's yellow solar radiation, and not I believe due to any sort of gravity effect.
Did you read the article I quoted? The professor said that Superman's strength came from Krypton having heavy gravity and that Krypton must have had nuetron star matter in its core. This of course goes against the DC explination that yellow solar radiation gives Superman his powers. Of course I'd side with DC as Superman loses his powers when exposed to red solar radiation.
What I saw was him flying around Earth until the Earth stopped spinning and then started to spin backwards. Then he flew the other way and stopped it again and started it spinning the right way. From this I assumed that he caused the Earth to spin backwards.
I admit it could be an effect of time travel relative to Superman and he had to change directions to get back in synch with the time stream and match vibrations or whatever with the Earth.
He should have contacted Dr. Who and bummed a ride on his TARDIS, it would have been safer.:)

is just how much of it exists in the Universe and how come there is such an abundant supply of it when pieces were spread all over the universe and it was just one planet? Also how come so much of it ended up going towards Earth? I recall one story had a lot of it in the solar system asteroid belt and Superman had to use a lead lined ship to get past it. Apparenlty he needed blue Krytonite to use on Bizzaro or as a cure for red Krytonite or some other storyline.
If I remember correctly it was Krypton's sun that exploded and destroyed the planet, or at least in one version it did. A red sun that went super nova.
Does Physics provide an answer why pieces of Krypton can harm Superman yet pieces of Earth do not harm Earthlings?;) Also if Krypton had neutron star matter in its core, how come Kryptonite which came from Krypton's core is not super heavy?
Also if Superman is unable to be harmed and bullets bounce off of his chest, how come there are no holes in his clothes? Current storyline on Superman had him arrive in a pod with no blankets, so they did not use them to create his costume. Kal-El was a test tube baby and sent to Earth in the ship inside of a pod.
Also how does Superman lose his strength when exposed to Kryptonite or Red Solar Radiation, if he was exposed to high gravity he still should have his muscles unless they wore out over the years of growing up in a lower gravity environment. Another theory is that his body absorbs yellow sun radiation like a solar cell and he gets his powers from that. Kryptonite or Red Solar radiation apparently discharges that energy.
Also his relationship with Lois, man of steel and woman of kleenex, need I avoid the details of that intiment relationship should they decide to have children?;)
Also how can Clark Kent pass physicals when they cannot even draw blood for blood tests from his arm as it is super hard? Also what about prostate tests, I'd hate to be the doctor who does those.:) Clark Kent is also an illegal alien having not been born on Earth, and obviously any papers saying so must have been forged or are false. Just how many powers does Superman have anyway? They seem to keep on inventing them. Super Ventriliquism, Super Hypnosis, Super Telepathy, Super Accounting, are they just making these up as they go along? Maybe they should rename him as Unclear Man as his powers seem to be Unclear.
Also they had Superman in space without the need for air. How is this possible? Just how long can he hold his breath and avoid the effects of decompression?
With muscles that powerful, he should weigh a ton or more. People would be able to notice this as he walks on weak surfaces like wood floors.
Also how is it possible to disguise yourself by combing out that s-curl, putting on glasses, and changing clothes? Someone with the intellect that Lex Luthor claims to have should be able to see through that transparent disguise, but apparently not.

Usually before I can run AV software or even access the Internet I have to uninstall a lot of junk they installed on their system to get it stable. Nothing like 30 shareware or commercial programs that loaded up 30 different icons on their startup tray and eat valuable resource memory. Uninstall them, run MSConfig and remove them from startup, etc.
I have been called an Anti-Hacker for removing malware from friends' and relatives' systems. I do it pro-bono or for a small fee if they insist on paying me. Usually enough for a tank of gas and a meal, I don't get much for my work, not as much as I could if I ran a business. I have three groups of people that want me to start up a business with them. Too bad I am spending most of my time at college now.
I go to a college that uses mostly E-Texts and the books are optional. The book company, not owned by the college, jacks up the price to $60USD a book. Also it is not always the same version or revision that E-Text is. My $60USD book was offered a $23USD buyback. It costs $45USD to print the E-Text at Kinko's so instead I opted to buy a cheap Laser Printer for $200USD and print out the E-Text to that.
Learn programming and database design and then develop medical systems based on your computer and medical knowledge. Go into business for yourself and sell it to other doctors. By the time you graduate there won't be very many IT jobs left, so you will have to start up your own business.
I suspect in a Swiss Bank account. If he had that money on him he could have easily created a fake ID and fake name and started over again. Lucky he was not smart enough to do that and used his real name and got caught.
I am currently going to college to improve myself so I can get a better job. I am studying business management. A career change from IT.
I was a victim of identity theft, someone was creating bogus online profiles using my personal info and trying to apply for credit cards in my name. Would have caught the individual but they were not in the US. Good thing I had credit protection and protection from identity theft from a major credit card company. It took a while, but those bogus profiles were eventually deleted.
I constantly get Phishing Scams from various IPs outside of the US that lead to bogus websites that pretend to be Paypal, ICQ, Amazon.com, etc and ask for all sorts of personal info. Also 419 type scam letters from various countries. Apparently fraud is global, did you know that?
Did you also know that there are viruses that originate from outside the US? Mostly in countries that do not have virus laws on their books?
I can cite anecdotes as well, I prefer to analyze trends.
I did analyze trends, one trend is to offshore IT work to other countries for cheaper labor. I also cited examples that shows that companies get what they pay for.
You may decide to do something idiotic about it (like passing a law) or something useful (like liberalizing labour markets, so people can compete based on their abilities), because you are not affraid of competing, arent you? After all those Indian IT people are rubbish? Right.
I am not afraid of competing if the market was fair. Problem is Indian IT workers can work for less than US Minimum Wage, so there is no way I can compete with them salary-wize. The only way I can compete is to offer high quality services and programs. Areas that according to articles I quoted, they lack in.
I work every day with people from India, and dear USians let me tell you, they are not only cheaper, but hardworking and on my personal experience on average are more capable than their counterparts in the US, UK and the far east. No wonder you are afraid, but the way to fight for your jobs is not by closing your eyes and hope that your goverment is going to take away economic realities.
In my experience I have found both good and bad examples. I worked with an Indian who was at the top of his game in IT Work, high level expert and hard worker. I even ran a business with him for a few years. He got a green card and was paid the same as me, high quality work. Then there are others, brought over here by H1B Visas and working as cheap as can be. Poor quality, poor communcations, and almost just filling a seat. Programs are turned in incomplete and full of bugs, need someone who knows quality control to fix them. Does not even bother to learn our culture, just there to collect a paycheck until the Visa expires and send money home. The difference is that the green card holder and friend of mine cared about the quality of his work, learning our culture, and becoming an equal if not a superior to the rest of us. My friend adapted to this new environment and thrived in it. He currently is applying to become a US Citizen.
You may need to completely change your carrier, dedicate yourself to something completely different or improve yourself on the IT field more than you ever dreamed would be necessary. I see tha the most talented people now a days are drawn from all around the world, not only from India, but these realities may escape some of the readership in/. that may work in places where this reality is not obvious, but here in London one knows one has to be on his toes or one will be flipping the proverbial burger.
I assume you mean career, I am currently doing that. Taking business management courses and learning about global business, quality control, empowerment, etc. I study and research and see that many firms in other countries need help to train their employees in quality control. Few exceptions like Japan already know how to control qualty. Sadly I am finding that many Indian firms need help in this area. There are few that I found that have good quality.
to villianize the US IT workers who are out of work and trying to fight to get their jobs back in the US. Obviously the article was written by someone who supports the corporations' moves to India for IT work. It is the old "blame the victims" tactic.
I know of many US companies who make a living teaching companies in other countries like India about quality control and the way that US Businesses do business. If Indian companies had good quality, these companies would be out of business and not have business booming. I shall cite some examples of the quality of offshoring below.
Thing is, most IT workers, such as me, do not blame the people taking our jobs, but the companies making the move to other countries and cutting us loose. This is a global trend that is not going to stop unless there is some law passed against it, which I doubt will happen.
First it was a Labor Shortage which was a big lie by the Corporations to get rid of US workers and replace them with H1B Visa workers or outsource to India. Now that there is a surplus of IT Workers, they still claim there is an IT shortage and need to move more jobs overseas.
Where is the beef? Where is the quality that Indian companies are supposed to have? Apparently they did not have Quality at Dell when they moved a Help Desk over to India. Where is the quality in programs written? Security issues are a big risk and we are supposed to trust someone we cannot even watch from half a world away that they will not harm source code or be a risk to security?
Of course there is always hidden Malware to consider. Really nice of them to put in a back door or virus or trojan to access the corp system after the Indian programmers are let go when the project is over.
Oh yeah, the myth that it is cheaper. Consider the Hidden costs of Ofshoring nothing like a project going over budget and full of bugs and needing US developers to fit it. Once again, where is the beef? That quality is just not there once again.
It seems that India is America's silent partner. We may not even hear about it during the election year. When a government is more interested in rewriting copyright laws so that the RIAA can sue 13 year-old girls and fair use is out of the picture, I wonder who our politicians really work for? Certainly not the US Citizens, only Corporations. So of course they support the wholesale slaughter of US IT Workers and the export of IT jobs overseas.
Nice to meet the people that are taking the jobs moved to India. Also nice to know they are not concerned that US Workers are losing their jobs to keep the Indian workers employed. I'd think if I was given a job at someone else's expense that I would quote my religious or culutral references instead as well when asked to respond to that.:)
Maybe we should personalize the US IT Workers too. Here is Bob, he worked for a Fortune 500 company for the past 15 years developing award winning programs and his work gained the company many patents. Bob holds a Masters in Information Systems. Management decided that he earns too much, so he was terminated and his job was sent with many others over to an IT sweatshop i
That link you provided goes to a government website that uses governmentspeak and does not actually tell me what apps still need to be written.
I do see that business apps for Linux, OSX, OS/2, etc may need to be written as Windows/DOS business apps dominate the market. A Data Wharehousing, ERP, Accounting, Payroll, HR, or even a Client Management program could make a nice niche market in alternative operating systems and help migrate organizations away from Windows.
The key seems to be to use open sourced solutions to create a package to solve a problem that most organizations face. If a company were to provide a total package of software, support, and training in alternative technologies, it might acutally make a good niche market.
Handheld devices are also an untapped market, the storage on them are now started to get beyond 30M and memory sticks and compact flash cards can expand that to the point of holding a small database of 100M or higher. Portable power in your hand, just like the desktop and laptop PCs have. I have an idea for hand helds that I have not seen anybody do yet, but I lack the capital to implement it. I am unemployed and have worked for Fortune 500 companies in IT Departments with software products that got named "Commercial Qaulity" by management. Yet that very same management turned on me to replace me with someone who works cheaper and faster than me, but not the same quality.
A VC or Angel would want stock and control of the company in exchange for investment. If I lose control of the company, I will not be able to carry out my vision and will be micromanaged to death. I belive in organizational management, and that classical management is going away. I need to be empowered to make decisions that effect my position and environment. If not, I might as well be working as another disposible employee for a company that is going practially nowhere and causing a ton of stress for its employees.
http://www.reactos.com/ ReactOS is a Windows alternative open sourced OS. It tries to be like Windows NT and will be adding Java, OS/2, and DOS subsystems soon.
It might not yet be ready for prime-time, but it is getting there. It can use NT drivers too. If Dell and others support it and contribute to the development, it can be a good alternative to Windows.
Only Jedi Masters have the ability to have their bodies vanish at death. It is a force trick that the other Jedis have not learned yet. Those Jedis that died in battle in episode II were not Jedi Masters. Yoda, Obiwan, Anakin/Vader were all Jedi Masters and thus have the body vanish at death force trick.:)
The body vanish at death force trick requires that the body become part of the force, hence the Jedi Master can come back as a ghost.
why not keep the Roman Gods and Godnesses naming convention of planets? Why switch it now?

:)
Wake up Orion, the Google has you!
I see tha the most talented people now a days are drawn from all around the world, not only from India, but these realities may escape some of the readership in /. that may work in places where this reality is not obvious, but here in London one knows one has to be on his toes or one will be flipping the proverbial burger.
Ah but there is a big risk involved in Offshoring. Sort of like taking all the company stock to Las Vegas and betting it all on number 35 on the Roulette Wheel. :) Just ask those who craft the contracts about the risks involved.
Nice to meet the people that are taking the jobs moved to India. Also nice to know they are not concerned that US Workers are losing their jobs to keep the Indian workers employed. I'd think if I was given a job at someone else's expense that I would quote my religious or culutral references instead as well when asked to respond to that. :)
It might not yet be ready for prime-time, but it is getting there. It can use NT drivers too. If Dell and others support it and contribute to the development, it can be a good alternative to Windows.
I will win a no-prize if I answer this right.
:)
Only Jedi Masters have the ability to have their bodies vanish at death. It is a force trick that the other Jedis have not learned yet. Those Jedis that died in battle in episode II were not Jedi Masters. Yoda, Obiwan, Anakin/Vader were all Jedi Masters and thus have the body vanish at death force trick.
The body vanish at death force trick requires that the body become part of the force, hence the Jedi Master can come back as a ghost.
