  1. Loyalty IS important factor on Business Week On Desktop Search Economics · · Score: 1

"...beyond the intangible benefit of brand loyalty (which on the Internet probably doesn't amount to a whole lot)..."

Brand loyalty doesn't amount to much on the Internet? I think that notion is very wrong. I believe that the more products/services one uses from a company - the more likely the avg person will stick with them. When a consumer trusts in a company, their loyalty usually follows. Sure, it isn't true for everyone, but trust/loyalty of the brand name is surely a very significant factor in any marketplace, the Internet being no exception.

In spite of your conclusion that the previously used styrofoam was "awesome", do you really think that Apple would decide to use a less-than-secure packaging medium, and risk a huge increase in the amount of units that arrive to the consumer in a damaged state?

  12. Re:RIAA targets... on RIAA Grinds Down Individuals in the Courtroom · · Score: 1

What exactly is being protected by copyright here? Is it the original copy of 1's and 0's (the digital audio) pressed into a plastic disc? Or is it the music (the song, the art) itself? Sure, a lossy mp3 copy of a song may be considered less valuable than the original copy. But I don't think it matters if it's a 1:1 copy at all. The content/property being protected isn't the physical CD itself, it's the music that is being delivered on the CD.

I think that the notion that people should be able to freely distribute degraded copies of music is akin to broadcasting music over the radio. Don't radio stations have to pay royalties on every song they play? Or since they have an original copy of the CD, do they have the right to broadcast it over the open airwaves without restriction?

The root of the issue is that copyright owners want (have?) control of your ability to LISTEN to their recordings, period. When you buy a CD, they are granting you the privilege to unlimited personal use. That personal "use" means listening to the music only. Not re-distribution in any way or form, whether it be less than 1:1 copies or not (mp3 files, FM radio, streaming internet radio, whatever...).

    Example:
"Data from several researchers shows that professional cyclists produce power outputs of between 320 and 450 watts during time trials ranging from 5 to 70 km in major tours."
"Dr. Alejandro Lucia, Universidad Europea de Madrid, Spain, has predicted that Lance Armstrong on his ascent of the Alpe D¹Huez (a 14 km climb of 8% mean gradient) in the 2001 Tour de France produced one of the greatest performances in the history of cycling: 38 minutes of near-maximal to maximal effort at an estimated mean power output as high as 475-500 watts! His average speed was 22 kilometers/hour, which he reached at a mean cadence of about 100-rpm using a 39 x 23 gear. Lance would have been averaging about 7 watts/kg."
