  1. Crashes? on Volvo's "Safety Car" Runs Windows 98 · · Score: 1

If Windows crashes while you're on the road, will the car burst into flames? Or just veer off the road in an uncontrollable trajectory?

I can only imagine the rescue workers... "Looks like a nasty crash!"

  2. GT3! on Gaming on the IMAX · · Score: 2

Too bad I live in Florida and don't have the money to fly over there to participate.

  3. Running a "server"? on RoadRunner Blocking Use of Kazaa · · Score: 4, Informative

I guess if you get completely technical, it could be considered a breach of contract. Most ISPs have clauses against running servers of any kind on their networks. P2P programs could be considered servers since they "serve" content to other clients who want it. I'd say they are justified, but it still kinda sux...

Oh well, at least the RIAA didn't force it on them, they had the initiative to do it on their own...

  4. Microsoft prevention? on Anonymous Will Award $200,000 for Xbox Linux · · Score: 2

Instead of Microsoft preventing this, they may want to quietly encourage this. If you look at it from the marketing standpoint, once this gets developed, it will most certainly boost Xbox (or as I call it, suXbox) sales to us nerds who want to install Linux on it.

Although if the rumors are true and they lose a buttload of money on it, maybe they'll get extra game sales or even get some new game developers

I can just picture everybody racing to get the first "Web server run from Xbox!" headline on /.

  5. Re:They've always blocked stuff unfairly... on All Sourceforge.net Being Blocked by SmartFilter · · Score: 2

Sounds like the crappy filtering service/software they used at my high school. We couldn't even go visit college sites at some points because they asked for your sex (male/female) on a form somewhere on their domain.

Sometimes I wonder if they block sites for any stupid reason they can think up, or if they do a massive search for "sex" or something in a page or domain name and don't police their own results.

  14. Dev kits on Unofficial GBA SDK Available for Free · · Score: 2, Insightful

I think that companies like Nintendo and Sony and such should sell stipped down dev kits for like, say $50... including software you'd need and maybe a transfer cable.

No disrespect to the great underground game hackers out there, but I don't think there is much of a risk of an uber fantastic game like Gran Tourismo 3 getting put out. If there is, maybe a deal can be struck to distribute the game to the masses. The gaming industry itself could see what's being turned out, and maybe find some new prospective talent.

I also think that the console manufacturers should make and sell (as well as install for a fee) mod chips to play IMPORT games (not burned games) because then they can make more $$$ selling the import games (as well as maybe an import fee, who knows)

  15. Directory scrolling on Moving towards Mozilla 1.0 · · Score: 1

I've noticed that in the RC-builds of the browser (and even in the 0.9.9 version) that browsing a directory listing is really slow. Browsing a large directory of images for my website (NOT pr0n) takes forever, because it has to "read" the entire directory, but once you get to the bottom (after like 2 minutes) it scrolls fine. But look at an image and go back and you have to do it all over again...

I hope they'll take care of that before the 1.0 release.

But seriously, if you can get your friends to shoot at you and then do the whole slo-mo dodge bullet action that would be pretty cool. (There was a mod for UT that slowed down the game and did trails on the bullets and stuff)

And from what I've heard of the Star Wars MMORPG, with being able to make your own light sabers(!!!!!) it sounds pretty kick ass

In high school I was in a robotics class though, we built a lift out of legos using I think about 4 sets worth of parts (mostly for reinforcing) and we lifted about 50 pounds with it. Probably coulda done more but we didn't want to start breaking rods and gears

I haven't had a chance to play with the mindstorm stuff yet, but rest assured if I had the money I would!

  19. Commercial Skip VCRs on PVRs and Advertisers' Worries · · Score: 1

I made this post before in a related story, but I thought I'd bring it back up.

  20. They'd just find another way on Pop-Under Ads Patented · · Score: 1

On the other hand, this is one stupid patent I'd love to see held up, just so that the licensing fees could discourage advertisers from attacking their potential clients.

If they did stop using pop-under, they'd just find another way of annoying us. Like those popup ads that spawn more when you close them, or the ones that take over an entire page and scroll with the window, or something else new and annoying (like installing stuff by exploiting a security flaw)

  21. Common Sense on Copyright Office Rejects CARP Recommendations · · Score: 5, Insightful

Hopefully common sense will be used when setting rates. Internet broadcast requires more costs (in theory) then regular radio broadcasts.

With regular radio broadcasts, the number of listeners has no impact on your ability to deliver content (in this case, music). With internet broadcasts, the more users you have, you need to have more bandwidth to be able to serve them content at the same data rate. In some (most?) cases more bandwidth leads to more expenditure of $$$.

If the other expenses of internet radio stations are to be considered in setting of these royalty rates (which I think is BS in the first place, the RIAA is too damn greedy) I should hope they will use common sense and set them lower.

  22. My high school on P2P Programs on K-12 Networks? · · Score: 1

Those student were later expelled from the computer science "prep" program the high school offered and returned to their regularly zoned high scools

I thought the punishment was rather harsh at the time, but I can understand where they were coming from... it wasn't a liability at the time (Napster was new and "unknown" at the time) but they still got the point across.

  23. Misleading spam on Another Go At Making Spam Cost Money · · Score: 1

A little OT, but I feel like venting a little bit.

The type of spam that pisses me off the most is the misleading subject spam. I don't mind stuff like "PORN PORN PORN!" or "HOT SEXXXXXY LADIES!" because right away I know that's spam and press the magical Delete key, and it disappears. It;s the stuff who's subjects are "Re: Account Problems" or "Bank message" or stuff like that. I run a website that involves users, I have a bank account (not to mention I'm a college student, so it's usually close to empty) so these mails catch my eye.

Then I open it and it's like "PORN PORN PORN!" or "GET OUT OF DEBT N O W!!!!" and other bullshit spam like that. THOSE are the types of spam I report to ISPs, THOSE are the types of spam that piss me off the most.

All of these other features would be plug-ins from various vendors that could be upgraded or replaced when better plug-ins came along.

Imo the best way to do this would be to make the "base" client free, and charge a nominal fee for the plugins, like $10 for one that will integrate a PIM with the client (and can synch with your handheld), or $5 for a basic indexer, etc

Great way to get market share (by giving the base model away) and allowing the user to customize based on their needs
