  1. Oh well on Intel to Build DRM into Next-Generation CPUs · · Score: 2

I use AMD processors anyways. (And yes, I did see somebody's post above that said AMD has agreed to support Pallidium already, I just hope they are smart and change their minds)

But this does raise an interesting question: Does Windows XP already have these types of systems in it, and the processor support will make it come to life?

  3. Backups on JVC Announces Technology To Prevent Software Copying · · Score: 4, Insightful

Well, at work we make backup copies of our software then store the master copies in a safe place, that way we can send the copies out with our techs so if they get scratched and stuff it's no big deal.

Fair use is a nice thing, and it actually saves us money because we don't have to buy new copies when one gets scratched.

When they finally (if ever) decide on a standard for the DVD recordable formats, will they be compatible with current (and future) DVD drives? I'd buy a DVD[+/-]R drive or whatever they call the new standard for backup purposes, as long as it was compatible with other dvd (player) drives I have and may buy in the future. If not, well, then I probably won't buy one.

Well, it's like this: Netscape has that whole "brand recognition" thing... Mozilla doesn't. At work, we have common computers for people who have sort of a "mobile office".

We tried an experiment where we had Mozilla on some (I say it's so much better then Netscape) and Netscape on the others. The ones with Mozilla were questioned the most, they didn't know what it was, but they knew immediately Netscape meant web browsing action.

That's the beauty about the US... If your representative does something you don't like, you vote for somebody else next election year (preferably somebody who holds similar views on things as you), or you write your rep and say "Hey! You suck for supporting this lame stuff, if you don't actually consider it's effect/real motive I'll be casting my vote for somebody who is NOT you" (but say it more politely I guess)

Makes me wonder what this means for computer theory, but if you think about it, polynomial time can still be slow for very large n with very big powers... although not as bad as an exponential with large n's (assuming you go out far enough that the exponential will grow faster then the polynomial)

  18. Price on Feds to Require Digital Receivers In All New TVs? · · Score: 2

I'd say price is the main hang-up for me... I'd love a digital tv, and a few of the stations in my area do broadcast a digital signal. I just can't afford a digital tv. If they had an add-on box with a digital tuner that I could, say, plug into the component video jacks on my tv, I could handle that, but aren't HDTVs the ones that are letterbox size, or do they make them in regular sizes too?

I guess he didn't want to be identified because he makes such gross generializations about everybody... not everybody steals music (I don't). Generalizations like that are as bad as stuff like "If you see a black person in a nice car it's stolen" or the whole "guilty until proven innocent" kind of thing.

And what's to say that the person (or persons) who did the DoS did not have anything better to do?
