This is possibly a good thing (tm). Lets stop being so cocky about Firefox, and admit that IE is good too. And lets get a 4-5 browser market out there; this will lessen the impact of a vulnerability on any one of them, and encourage competition between them.

Doesn't resolve the fundamental problem of a hole in the core API.

However, agreed that the open source model provides two advantages:
      - quicker fixes to such problems (with X vendors concerned, even without community support this will be FAST
      - not necessarily the same APIs everywhere; let crackers crack 5% of the market. Wahey, wahoo! Anyone is going to be more motivated if they can take out 80% of the market. This is true in nature; diversity lives longest.

forcing Microsoft to stop doing business in member states as long as they remain noncompliant

Well, effectively removing any profit from MS on the EU market (can't see them making much more than 2 Million a day) is effectively the same is it not? Reducing the EU market to "not interesting" for MS. MS has the choice of clearing the market (Shiaaa right! And monkeys might fly out of my butt!), losing 2.3 M per day, or complying with existing legislation.

The EU can of course not ban MS from the market, because
      1. this would put all the employees on the dole
      2. MS could effectively declare void any present contracts, including maintenace, which would be more harmful to MS customers than MS themselves
      3. Let's face it; 800 million a year revenue for the EU is good money!

    1. They stick a MS logo on the product. Once this logo is on the product, MS is in the same boat as OEMs over product quality. If the driver is no good, why do MS accept the cash that OEMs pay for this log... oops.
    2. Do OEMs have the access to MS internals that are required to develop good drivers?
    3. Can MS not in some way improve the OS driver platform to ease good driver development?

If MS wants a good end-user experience, and at the same time allow for a plethora of hardware, it is up to them to ensure these objectives are compatible.

IIRC, RedHat & co do not sell server solutions on any old hardware, so when you buy this from them, you can expect hardware to work.

  22. Re:America is still worse, right? on Australians Allowed to Format Shift Media · · Score: 1
You are forgetting that the function f(t) is only defined in the interval
    Tset < t < Tnec
where Tset = time of start of elected term and Tnec = time of next election campaign. Thus every 4 or so years (depending on local legislation) you have a singularity where nothing happens (a.k.a. campaign) followed by a different curve depending on the outcome of aforementioned campaign.

You'd definately need to incorporate some probability density function on election outcome into the equation.

Any country using Diebold voting machines can consider f(t) to be continuous without interval restrictions.
