Come on... we all agree Enterprise more or less sucked... but these two "stand-alone" mirror episodes were pretty fun. the tombstone is sealed on this series so why not take it over the top.
The constant power shifts, midriffs make it interesting to say the least, and the Defiant from TOS's The Tholian Web, and Phlox's experiments...!? that has to be worth the price of admission. In fact these mirror episodes are the exact opposite of what you normally see on Enterprise:-)
I thought the CG in part II looked horrible, but overall taken lightly and in the context of the series being scrapped these episodes were thrilling. hearing the Defiants TOS audio effects seeing the bridge light up should have at least brought back some fond memories.
I don't think Berman and Braga intend on continuing anything, rather just deliver a handful of decent standalone episdodes until its over.
I am a fan of the series myself, however I know a few hardcore sci-fi fans who don't like the show because of the "antique" weapons, shotguns, double action revolvers etc . These are the same people who dislike "Aliens" because of the non-so-futuristic weaponry and despise the wild-west holodeck stories from TNG, and any other meshing of future with the past. Unfortunately these hardcore sci-fi'ers seem to have great influence over the fate of todays sci-fi.
Apple seems to be slacking on their PowerMac product line. This is their most expensive product, supposedly high-end.. they are charging premium 2005 dollar for 2003 hardware.
- The Radeon 9600 was released in 2003.. Where is the X800?? - Apple actually launched Dual 2.0Ghz G5's in 2003 (todays speedbump still includes this product) - The case is still gigantic (2003 size), and still only sports 1 external drive bay - Still only 3 PCI slots (2 if your using the Nvidia Video card) - Only 512MB Ram for a workstation?
If you spend $2000 - $3000 for a workstation you should at least get specifications to match.
Actually $3000 gets you 6 Mac Minis... cluster those together and you've got more juice than the PowerMac.
Actually not really. Their legal squabbles over the past few years have ended up hurting consumers. Macromedia changed the Flash UI how many times? Furthermore both product lines are already so similar that is is expensive for small design houses to buy both.
Hopefully certain applications (Livemotion, GoLive, Freehand) will be deprecated for good after the merger and others will finally get a solid standardized interface (Flash), while others will be merged so consumers can get the best of both worlds (Photoshop, Fireworks).
I am using 10.3.8 on my Mac Mini and 12" Powerbook... but I agree that once you look past the marketing hype Tiger really only offers a couple of new major features (features that you can touch and feel right away I suppose).
Sure there are numerous enhancements under the hood - CoreImage being the biggest IMO, however, are these going to make a huge differece in my day to day operations the day I install?
One can hope that Tiger will offer a feature that has been part of all other OSX releases but never hyped by Apple - a performance increase on SAME hardware.
While I really dislike most of Paul Thurrotts questionable editorial he gets one thing right "Mac OS X 10.4 "Tiger" is, in fact, a minor upgrade to an already well-designed and rock-solid operating system"
I am not really sure I want to spend $120 so I can search through my documents faster.. and VoiceOver I will never use.. automater looks like alot of work. But speed... I will pay for a snappier faster interface anyday.
Days before beginning production on the Dimension drama "Sin City," Rodriguez resigned his DGA membership so that he could co-direct with Frank Miller, a film neophyte who created, wrote and illustrated the three-book graphic novel series on which the movie is based.
DGA rules dictate that there be only one director assigned to direct a motion picture at any given time, although the guild occasionally grants a waiver to that policy. On Thursday, a DGA spokesman said, "The guild regrets Mr. Rodriguez's resignation, however, we stand firmly behind the principle of one director-one film."
Although Rodriguez is technically the director, he quit the Directors Guild so that 'Sin City' creator Frank Miller could be credited as director (The Directors Guild only allows for 1 director per movie).
As a result of leaving the Guild (or being forced out) Rodriguez lost his contract with Paramount to direct the big budget John Carter of Mars (Princess of Mars). Thats got ot hurt.
Lucas had a dispute with the Guild back in the day and dropped out as well.... This months Wired has a good article on the subject.
I would like to see a challenge like this with vanilla installs of the top 10 Linux distros.
As Linux gets closer to mainstream more and more people are installing without tweaks or recompiles. How well does Linux stand up without the expertise of a professional?
... in related news eWeek is able to sell more impressions and generate more revenue by getting coverage on Slashdot for pointless non-news articles such as new Virus hides in compressed files...
This season has been good in comparison to the previous ones agreed, but Enterprise suffers from annoying character syndrome: tucker, t'pals hair, hoshi, travis, daniels, the theme song... also have you noticed the special effects have taken a turn for the worse this season?
I just got a mini yesterday and it runs very cool . compared to a Powerbook. The internal fan comes on when the CPU temperature reaches 55C (could even be 60C), which only happens during games or other really processor intensive applications.
Even then, the aluminum case remains room temperature (feels cool). The fan itself is very quiet. During light use (Internet, word processing) the Mini is absolutely silent and operates cool to the touch.
The Powerbook on the other hand gets almost too hot to touch when the CPU hits 55C, and the internal fan is rather noisy in comparison.
M$ may not be dumb . but they are not that smart either. Basically they charge so much for a legitimate copy of Windows that most people are forced to pirate. Windows XP home edition costs over $200 boxed..
As a result, 40% of Windows installations are pirated (could be even higher in some countries)... to deny access to software updates completely would be a public relations disaster and sink the company back into the almost constant negative mainstream press that has haunted them for the last 2-3 years. What they are doing today is more about the message, not action.
Furthermore their monopoly is dependent on pirated software, so it is probably in their best interest not to ruffle the pirate feathers too much. These are not loyal customers and could at any moment jump ship given an alternative. Thats what Linux is banking on.
You can't convince a highschool students to do anything really... Its not surprising the school authorities vetoed his invitation... the speech (his article) is long, boring, without humour... and would bomb in front of a few hundred highschool students.
I remember a few guest speakers during assemblies who didn't last more than 5 minutes before background chatter and noise drowned them out completely.

If all the Enterprise episodes were like the recent "In a Mirror Darkly" arc I think more people would be watching ...
AMEN
Let remind you that no one has really moved their processor performance much in the last two years, until just recently with dual core designs.
So where is the dual-core??
Why would I want another?
Why wouldnt you. CD to CD or DVD to DVD copying is much easier with 2 drives. Why not give the user options?
it could be four feet tall for all I care
Alot of people care. I personally don't want a 4+ foot tall computer ... this isn't the 70's.
And what would most people use more slots for?
More network cards, better Audio cards, Raid controllers ... things that power users who buy PowerMacs typically need.
You shouldn't have to buy extra RAM on a $3000 machine .......

AMD will be releasing Quad Core chips as early as 2007 according to Arstechnica. Where does that leave Dual Core?

There is really only one way to look at that

good point ... why on earth does the game cost anything when it is subscription based?
if you are planning to pay the monthly subscription can you not just download the game installer for free?

You could use the GNU OSX archive: http://www.osxgnu.org/
Of course as you mentioned there is Fink which lets you do things like this relatively easily ...
The 12" Al Powerbook. It gets extremely hot, especially right above and below where the HD sits. Almost too hot to touch sometimes.
Plus the fan can be pretty noisy at 65C. How is the fan on the 15"?
I am using an Apple keyboard, however the display is just a VGA NEC 17" lcd .. nothing special.
Works well.

How are you forced to use AAC (with the iPod)?
...
The iPod plays MP3's no problem which you can download, purchase or create yourself.
Nobody is forcing you to use AAC. Even the iTunes software gives you the option to "rip" in many formats
