  4. Mac users should be pissed to see IE go. Seriously on Microsoft Ends IE for Mac · · Score: 3, Interesting

Mac users should be pissed to see IE go. At the very least, it's a valuable web development tool. Although it is not identical to Win IE, it has similar idiosyncrasies. Microsoft commonly favors lame proprietary implementations of would-be standards. Heck, look at their support for ECMAScript.... "JScript," not to be confused with "JavaScript." Mac developers need access to this stuff.

The loss of IE on the Mac simply increases a Mac web develope'rs need for a secondary Windows box or VPC for testing. Although that need has always existed to some extent, now it REALLY exists.

  17. Re:Fire on Microsoft Sued Over Alleged Xbox 360 Defects · · Score: 3, Insightful

I doubt it's a design flaw. It's probably a manufacturing defect that pertains to a batch of 360's.

I've seen stuff like this happen before when bringing products to market. In a nutshell you design something; do environmental testing, build prototypes, seed prototypes to developers; select some manufacturers; do a small manufacturing run; seed final hardware to developers / testers, etc.

However, if you don't watch your manufacturer(s) like a hawk, they might screw you. Perhaps they deviate from your spec at the last minute; perhaps they get in a pinch and decide to replace "good component A" with "shitty component B;" etc.

And the potential for f'k ups like these only increase once you start outsourcing your manufacturing to people halfway around the globe. Communication becomes an issue, and specs are commonly not adhered to as planned.

Microsoft has been fairly open about the development of this console. Prototypes have been out and about for quite sometime and they've been holding prerelease press events with finalized hardware. If this overheating problem was a major design flaw, it would've popped up already.

I bet if we were to crack open a "bad" power supply and a "good" power supply we'd see some different components.

  20. Myspace is a giant pile, but... on The MySpace Generation · · Score: 2, Interesting

On one hand, I totally agree. Myspace is a giant pile. It's not reliable, the UI is horrible, every other member's site is littered with windows media files, it's owned by News Corp, etc.

On the other hand, all of my old college friends are on MySpace. I've been able to keep in contact with people that I would have otherwise never heard from again.

Unlike Friendster or Facebook, MySpace simply let people sign-up without jumping through hoops. You didn't have to be attending a university, you didn't have to be invited by a current member, etc. Consequently, a TON of people seem to be on MySpace now.

The ability to see you friend's address books is a great idea.

Now, if someone could make it less crappy, I'd be happy as hell. (google?)

WTF? I don't want a stupid RF receiver hanging off the side of my laptop. Moreover, I don't need anymore RF devices in my life.

I saw a slew of mice touting "2.4ghz" RF .... considering that I'm already having interference problems with my 2.4ghz WiFi router 2.4ghz phone, 2.4 ghz game controllers, etc... why would I want a 2.4ghz mouse?

  24. Re:Quality Repairs on Fix Your Crashing X-Box 360 With String · · Score: 1

Typically you test the "final" product... and I'm sure Microsoft did that. However "final" from a small manufacturing run might not be the same as something that was spit out during mass manufacturing.

Really, the best way of avoiding these problems is to be glued to your manufacture like a fly on shit. Oversee everything and make sure they understand what you're talking about.

Microsoft seemed to be fairly open about testing the new hardware. People had access to it. They didn't pull an Apple and keep a product in exclusive secret testing until it was released. That's when you're most susceptible to crappy rev 1 products. ie Scratched iPods
