Personally, I don't care about any of those features. I like iTunes for its song and album management.
There used to be a Linux mp3 player called Sumi (or xtunes) that had playlists, a library, tag editing, and burning features similar to iTunes'.. however I think Apple sued the developers.
iTunes feels very much like a virtual CD case. No other audio player seems to pull this off properly.
If anyone knows of any iTunes-ish mp3 players for linux... please... do tell:)
As Steve Jobs said himself... "hell has frozen over":)
I'm currently reloading Apple's site every 20 minutes... I can't wait to place iTunes on my Wintel boxes. Not only is the ITMS the shiznit... iTunes probably the best audio media player in town.
I'm anxiously waiting to give WinAMP a swift kick to the recycle bin:) (now, if only we can get a Linux port of iTunes)
People JUST started adopting it... give it time.

Is Bluetooth Dead?
·
· Score: 1
Damn. Hardware and Software companies JUST started supporting Bluetooth. Shesss... give it some time before you start issuing death certificates.
Last year bluetooth cell phones, PDAs, and devices were fairly hard to find, to say the least. I really wanted a SonyEricson w/ BT, however I couldn't find a wireless provider that would activate one for me.
Finally, this year, I was able to get a BlueTooth phone:) I'm in heaven. It syncs up to my Mac, my address book automatically backs up (I'm accustom to loosing my cell's address book every year after my phone falls in a river or something), I can use it as a remote for iTunes VLC or my DVD player; I can use it as a remote for Keynote and PPT, I can use it as a modem, it will wake my Mac from sleep as soon as I enter the building, etc etc.
Bluetooth shizziles ma nizzle. It's awesome.
But like I said... give it sometime. People are still adopting it. USB and FireWire didn't become successful overnight; this won't either. Stuff like this has to be in the market for at least 2 or 3 years before it's common place. BlueTooth has only been, legitimately, in the market for about a year. Apple, Microsoft, Sony, Nokia, Palm, etc have only recently started using this technology.
You'll probably get a lot more then a 5-10% improvement. My crusty 'ol Dual g4 feels significantly faster with Panther. Quartz alone seems to draw twice as fast. I imagine G5 boxes will get a significant speed bump... even if Panther is still, basically, a 32 bit OS.
Moreover, Jaguar is still not fully taking advantage of serial ATA, The G5's faster bus, the reworked AltiVec unit(s), etc.
Dude, this is seriously awesome. I can't wait to have iTunes on my Windows boxes.
No doubt, the music store is cool; however, the iTunes MP3 player is what I'm really excited about. iTunes is what WinAMP 3 should've been (I'm still using 2 like most other folks). iTunes has easily manageable playlists, simple file transfers, lots of cool burning / ripping/sharing options, etc etc.
Of course, iTunes doesn't support skins... however I stopped using those stupid things years ago.
Now, if only we can get a port of the Finder for Windows;)
AAC only applies to downloaded music. You can transfer it to 3 machines, send it to an portable player, burn it to your hearts content, or convert it into a different format without DRM.
Moreover, iTunes has setting to rip to MP3, AAC, and AIFF by default. You never have to use AAC if you don't want to. (actually I think music ripped to AAC doesn't have password protection)
This book looks like yet another piece of text that mixes up GUI design and information architecture. They're two very different subjects.
Just because you understand the fundamentals of information architecture does not mean you know squat about design. A good GUI need to incorporate both design principles and information architecture principles.
If you only focus on architecture you end up with an ugly UI. This is Why windows looks and feels like a donkey's behind... and OS X doesn't.
Coping Apple's interface designs seems to work well for folks who are too cheep to hire anyone that knows anything about information architecture or GUI design.
Now that my tech company has tanked I live with my folks. (weeeeee) Apparently managerial experience, 2 degrees, and a bagillion resumes aren't enough for a web developer in San Francisco.
Since I'm only 24, and have no savings whatsoever, I'm back at school and living with Ma and Pa. It's awesome. I no longer have sex; I have to check-in if I'm gone for too long; I get told to "be safe" 8 times a day; AND I get to eat my mom's home cooking!
I'm sure most of you would gladly give up sex and freedom for food...right?
audio/video interlacers take video encoded with one codec, audio encoded with another, and mesh them together. MOV, AVI, ASF, RAM, OGG, etc They all incorporate codecs, but they, themselves, are not codecs.
MS and Real have done a fantastic job of confusing end users about codecs. WMP plays Real files, Real plays WMP files, and both players try to take over your computer's media during installation. Moreover, now developers seem to cater to this bullshit with installers that install one codec for multiple media players (araahhhh).
Apple tends to stay out of this loop. Apple doesn't try to support WMP or Real content. They support MOVs/ AVIs and standards such as MPG. It's simple and it works. I wish WMP and Real would keep to their damn selves as well.
But, hey, I HIGHLY advise downloading MPlayer or VLC. Both of these players play just about anything and either one is well worth the download.
What is with all of this BS about lost jobs? Whoever voted against this bill because they wanted to "prevent job loss" has their head firmly planted up their ass.
Tele-marketers have the worlds fastest turn-over rate. I know... I was tele-marketer in college for, ohhh, about 2 weeks. Ya, your boss has been their for a while, and there's always one pathetic person who's been making calls for 6 months, but that's about it. Most people do this stuff for a under two months. Seriously.
Loosing tele-marketers will have little to no affect on the economies of counties (well perhaps Telemaketopolis. they could take a hit).
Ehh, I don't know about this book. Perhaps I'll check it out someday.
After visiting the web site I can't say I'm a fan of "socionomics." It's like socio-economics, but half-ass. When I pulled up the "manifesto" I felt like I was reading the works of some of Karl Marx wannabe.
I don't think this guy has spent enough time doing sociological and anthropological research. I understand the cheesy "wave effect"
Things get good, people get happy and apathetic, people get taken advantage of in that state, things get bad, people get pissed, people fix what's wrong, people work hard for things to get good, things get good, people get happy and apathetic, etc etc
As over simplified as that may be, it's important to realize that not every society in the world works like this. You really need to look a broader perspective in order to get some sound research.
it's a giant heatsink... but it the best looking heatsink I've ever seen.
As for iTunes.... 2.5 million downloaded songs (per month) for a piece of Mac only software. That ain't to shabby.
Personally, I don't care about any of those features. I like iTunes for its song and album management.

Nah, there are quite few ways to convert protected AAC files.
You could use AudioHyjack, burn them and re-rip them, or try something like mAC3dec (i think that will decode locked AAC files).
There are a few other solutions out there.. you just have to look.

I advise doing that.

Updating all your design apps at once is a huge project. It looks like Adobe might be taking advantage of developers overseas.
Hopefully Adobe's software doesn't become a huge bug-filled mess like Macromedia's (especially Macromedia god awful Mac ports).
Wow.. it hurts to watch the Fanimatrix.

I hope Turd Co. didn't fold up.
Yup, I want to pet the ^#$@ out of that cute bastard. More tech companies need cute logos.
Don't forget the classics. Marx, Durkheim, Weber, etc

Ouch... this is a naaaasty little bug.
Now, I don't support these RIAA law suits, but I highly doubt a 12 year old girl didn't know downloading music was illegal.
.
How could you not see anything in the news, at school, online, etc that told you this was illegal. This information is freak'n everywhere
At 12 your going to high school in a year. You're not that clueless. The "I didn't know because I'm a 12 year old girl" defense doesn't cut it for me.
You could open a finder window, open view options, set all finder windows to have a black background, and set all folders to have white text.
You could also assign a special style sheet to your browser if need be.
Damn. DRM seems to be the word of the year for evil corporations.
Hasn't Office had digital rights management for quite sometime? Password protected documents anyone?
Ya VLC is awesome.
VLC is the one player to rule them all.
