I don't mean to sound like a troll, but I h-a-t-e Utah. Visiting Utah is like visiting a state governed by the senior management of Walmart Inc. It's a big Wonder Bread eating, media censoring, money hungry slab of land that has produced one too many Osmond kids.
I hope those directors win. I don't care how crappy or violent modern movies are... film is an art, and censoring art is ridiculous. People need to learn how to interpret art properly. Moreover, people need to teach their kids how to interpret art properly.
Let me put it this way. Pulp Fiction needs Sam Jackson saying "freak'n" and "heck" no more then the statute of David needs a pair of boxer briefs.
Unreal 2k3 has, more or less, always been Mac bound. Originally Epic had planned to let Westlake Interactive port Unreal to MacOS, however they changed their minds a few months ago.
Porting a Direct X engine to OpenGL is not a big deal. The two API sets are actually quite similar now. Folks such as John Carmack and the developers over at Westlake have already written about this numerous times.
Moreover, developing OS X is, from what I hear, somewhat of a fairly rapid and simple process. Epic recent started development for an OS X version of U2k3, and they plan to have the game on the shelfs by December. That's -very- quick.
I would imagine that Epic realized that it really didn't make sense for a company like Westlake to port u2k3 to OS X. It could be done quickly at Epic, they'd make more money on game sales, and they'd have more options when it came to licensing the U2k3 engine.
This is by no means a new idea. Folks have been building macs for years, however due to the fact that you have to aquire a few used proprietary parts, prices can get quite high.
This is typical of any company's first release of a new tech toy or computer.
PS: you could have returned that powerbook to Apple for repairs if you wanted. I knew quite a few folk that got new drives (they we're actually giving folks a DVD/CDRW upgrade) and had batteries fixed.
ohh come on.:) This is Slashdot, we're all geeks... of course we know lots of people with linux boxes.
I myself am involved in web publishing and multimedia...most of the people I know use MacOS. It's a different demographic. I tend to hang out with publishing folks, not SysOps or applications programers;). The only linux boxes I ever deal with run our web server and mail server.
I have no doubt that their are a LOT of linux box in the world today. Yet, you really have to look at what they are doing. Are folks coming home to a linux box to manage their digital photos, surf the web, check their email, do their homework, etc? I image quite a few people are, however I imagine that a LOT more people are coming home to Macs to accomplish these tasks.
Comparing Linux boxes to MacsOS boxes is like comparing a cheep, hard-working, utility trucks to plush SUVs. Sure, there may be a few more utility trucks on the road, but remember, they serve a different purpose in life.
10.2 is a fairly nice OS. It's one of those things you install and end up saying "woh... this is cool"
Nevertheless, even though OS X is a native 32bit audio OS with a system Midi / audio Manager and system level support for Steinberg and ProTools plugins (which is just -too- damn cool), is does not have a lot of pro audio apps ported to it.
Steinberg and DigiDesign really need to get their a**es together. These guys are camped out on OS 9 Island all by themselfs and it's holding a lot of people back.
MS tends to support Mac OS, albeit poorly, with their various networking protocols, passports, etc. No doubt, the MacBU (Business Unit) at MS typically has to play catch up, it usually gets the job done. (I have a feeling that those poor guys are left out in the cold on a lot of things:))
As for linux though... I doubt MS want's to go out of the way to make linux users feel welcome.
However if things keep going the way they're going, open standards will always prevail. I would imagine that most WiFi router manufacturers would rather sell routers that function on all 3 major platforms right immediately (as the do now). Seems kind of dumb to sling hardware that only functions on Windows, with the possibility of mac support 6 months down the line, and little possibility of Linux support.
There are quite a few OS X users who are upset that they are going to have to -pay- for an upgrade which will fix many major OS X bugs and or once again support certain features of Apple hardware (ie software WiFi support for OEM Mac antennas) that where disabled with 10.0 or 10.1
OS X 10.0 was by no means a complete OS. And, even though OS X 10.1 was much better, the same could be said for 10.1 as well. I can understand why these people are kind'a ticked off. They want what should've been given to them for free.
This is what I thought as well, However creating an AppleScript would probably take forever.
I think this guys best bet is to develop using cocoa and to give a timed public beta to the mac community.
However, I couldn't hurt to check out Apple's developer connection page as well. There is a -lot- of good info there. Ask some developers at Apple. Moreover, try to ask some developers from the OmniGroup ( http://www.omnigroup.com ). They do a lot of consulting, they are friendly, and they have been developing with NeXT, Rhapsody, and OS X for years.
Seriously. I could care less about most viri. They're typcially targeted at things I hate:) However, calling 911 is just plain tasteless. People's lives are one the line.
Whoever wrote this thing is an evil 'lil sh*t. Why couldn't he/she point this toward some tech-help phones over at AOL or Worldcom? Do some good:)
I'm glad to see someone taking this extremist idiot to court. Why was he ever even apointed to office? Every time this man ran for office he lost miserably.
Wow, without Alzheimers I'll have all of my senses in peek performance for my experiences with ulcers, heart disease, mood swings, and blood coming out of my butt at 75. Bring it on;)
Regardless of whether or not he is the product manager. The latest Toast update does not install DRM software. Anyone that has run it and played with it for 5 minutes can tell you that. This is simply just another bug fix with support for more optical drives.
Many mac user have been avoiding this update for fear that it will cripple their copy of Toast. This update does no such thing. So update away.
This EULA could be a sign of things to come, or simply move that will require the drafting of one less pain-in-the-butt legal document. Who knows....and, seriously, who really cares. Apple's iTunes, DiskCopy, and System burning software allow one to duplicate, rip, and burn, Data and Audio CDs.

Very true.

Hydrogen is the future. They have horse power and water is the only thing that comes out of their tail pipes.
EVs are kind of lame.

No, it's the OS X users that want a free upgrade

Ohh I get it. rehmudi... remedy.
Man, that's a bad acronym.
Damn, I knew -someone- would find a way to sell sh*t in a box someday. Go figure, it's go'na be George Lucas. ;)
(I guess this post will drop my good Slashdot karma down a peg.)
IBM's G3's are in Apple's iBooks.
I hope the Bob's don't start laying people off!
Back in my day, the internet had only one hyperlink, and it worked... and we liked it that way.

use mozilla :) Kill the "onLoad" event handler
